Well, nevermind about it having to be fit for my younger brother. He's not interested. Nope, Giant Robo was not enough to get him into anime. (At least not the first episode.)

To tell the truth I'm not sorry. It's easier to find things that are indecent than decent, so if he became a rabid fan at his age I'd be worried. Sorry, but that's the truth. He watches a lot of sports, generally more wholesome (and boring) to my view of things. (Wonder if that offends anyone? Sports people? Anime people? Please don't hurt me! I'm just blabbering!!)

Well, he does watch professional wrestling, too. Anime's probably not too filthy for him (at least some), but I'm not going to try to convert him. Not yet.

I watched the first episode again with the original english dub. I like Ivan's voice much better, but I didn't think Ginray (sp?) was as good. She sounded much angrier. Anyway. ...Don't know.

Now I'm off to hopefully watch the 2nd ep with my bro.

Trust me, you absolutely have to watch all 7 episodes in order to really "get" the series.

Both dubs are a mixed bag. Some voices are good (Chuujo's) and some are awful (Murasame's).

Believe me, you will enjoy the rest. I was a bit underwhelmed with the first few episodes, but if you've liked what you've seen thus far, you will totally adore the rest.

The guy with the beads is Issie.
Chuujo is the leader of The Experts, the guy with the pipe.

It's not really the French accent, but why would a Japanese character, Kenji Murasame, have a French accent? LUNACY!

I watched a few minutes of the commentary on the first disc. Interesting.

But... is it my imagination, or were the lines completely different in the dubs on the second episode? (Especially the second half?)

Currently, I am re-watching the entire series, this time in the original English dub. (sub rocked!!) I adore the original dub. Hanzui's voice in the dub is my fave. I dETEST the new dub (the guy who does Yami Yugi as GENYA!?!? what were they THINKING!?!? don't get me started)

Fave character(s): eh...Hanzui, Genya, Youshi and of course, Lord Alberto the Impact (in the dub he's "Shocking Alberto" and in the new dub he's just "alberto"...GOSH)

Fave scene(s): the finale, and the destruction of Paris

Fave music...bit...thing...: the Baroque-esque thing played right before Alberto and Taiso duke it out for the second time.

Yay, I am so thrilled that you liked it!! I think more and more people are starting to understadn that I'm *NOT* crazy and Giant Robo really *IS* awesome!

My favourite scene... welll... I can't say... but it's in the last episode and involves Alberto.
And Chujo's thing at the end of ep 6/start of ep 7.
Also, Tetsugyu's stand against Genya in the 5th episode.

I watched episodes three through five with the original dub yesterday evening. They were cool, but I think I liked the newer dub better on those episodes.

I thought they had a little bit of fast talking to fit everything in, the way they did on Speed Racer. And I didn't like the kid's voice as much.

I liked Ivan's voice in the first two episodes in the original dub. Awesome.

I haven't seen any in subtitles so I can't complain about that at least. ^-^

some random ramblings considering the original dub...

-Some of the VA's also perform in the series Blackjack, and like the nerd that I am, I could recognize a couple:

Sunny was voiced by the same girl who did Pinoco. Both characters look similar.
Genya was voiced by a priest/spy in Blackjack, and both characters have similar bangs. I wasn't too thrilled with his voice, but at least he had the "evil laugh" down.
The guy who did The fAbulous Fitzgerald also provided the voice for a sleazy tabloid reporter.
In the final episode, chuujo's voice was replaced by that of Blackjack himself, making Chuujo even more cooler than he already is.
The red mask guy's voice is the same as Dr. Kitigo's voice in Blackjack. I think he'd have done a better job as Genya, but then...so could a lot of people.

-Murasame's voice got changed in the final episode. Either that or his voice was just muffled by that force field...kinda doubt it though.

-So did Daisaku's voice in disc 2.

-is Ivan Russian or German? 'cause his name is Russian but his accent is German.

-Same thing with Von Vogler. His accent shifts from German to French at the drop of a hat.

-There's a lot of cussing in this dub. A shame, because other than that the writing was real tight.

-Funniest line in the dub: "Please don't have an aneurism." ~ Komei

-Favorite VA's: Alberto, Ginrei, Taiso, Chuujo, Hanzui.

I'm going to watch it with the new dub now...just as an excuse to watch it again XD

BEST SCENE: the boxing match.

I just got an manga called "Gigantor." It looked sorta fun, and it was marked down.

Anyway, I looked through and I was shocked. It ... it looks kinda like Giant Robo. I mean, there's a guy with Murasame hair (and I mean, "Murasame hair!" It's exactly the same.) There is, of course, the requisite kid who controls the robot. But there's *also* a guy with a moustache and something metallic-looking over his eye. And on about the seventh page there are people wearing the Big Fire mask.

So, I checked the authors: Ben Dunn, David Hutchinson, Ted Nomura. And copyrighted 2003. But... in the back was a page of writing by the person who invented the robot story, after WWII, in the 60s I believe.

So.... I checked online, and found out something about the animation. But, that doesn't explain why there is a "new" Gigantor manga (when it was originally written as a manga). Nor does it tell me if the "new" authors just copied Giant Robo, or if they copied the original manga.

I'm hoping someone knows! Please tell me if you do.

First thing: Please tell me where you got this, I need it. Badly.

Gigantor was by Mitsuteru Yokoyama. Yasuhiro Imagawa originally went to Yokoyama and asked him if he could use all of his characters in an original story. Yokoyama said yes, so Imagawa went into all of his old manga and pulled characters he liked to create the series.

The new Gigantor anime has Murasame, Shizuma, and Von Vogler in it.

The guys with the BF masks are Q Agents, Yokoyama used them in many different stories... I'll have to go find the website (it's in Japanese), but it has pictures of all of the GR characters from their original comics.

Sorry I can't help more. I couldn't find an ISBN. Although there was something about it on Amazon, I didn't see the exact title. So it may only be a limited release. I think there's *something* about Gigantor by these people coming out there soon, however. I'll edit the link in later, if that'll help.

The back says Sentai Studios Graphic Novel and the original cost was $14.95 US / $20.00 Can.

I suppose it looks sorta American... but until I looked at the authors I didn't know it wasn't old Japanese. (But then I don't always know stuff like that anyway.)

I'm glad to hear that about the characters. It is a relief of mind!

Well, I received and watched the third GR DVD yesterday.

There were a few things I didn't like about it.

In general, I enjoyed it, and I still like the characters a lot.

My favorite character is still Go. (Partly because I just like him, partly because, well, I know what it's like to cry too much. >.> Ahem. Anyway, I don't think I've ever seen a character in anime with a personality like that. And he wasn't played like a total idiot.)

I don't know what my favorite scene was.

Looking back, I see that... man, I've really spammed a lot in this thread!

EDIT: I really think they should make a novel about Giant Robo. It is complex enough for it. And they would be able to explain some of the more confusing bits, and tell what the characters are thinking. They could even give it a different title, if they wanted to. It is certainly complex enough.
