Anime for a 12 year old Autistic kid

I have an autistic brother and I'd like to get him into anime so I'd have something to do with him.

Any suggestions?

He likes Hamtaro so we can start there.

Spirited Away is pretty harmless. And Castle in the Sky, I think is what it's called. Those are kid friendly from what I remember.

Any particular genre that your brother is interested in? Obviously if he hasn't seem much anime that's a tough question, but how about in general? Is he into robots? Swords? Guns? Should we stay away from violent and suggest comedy, or would comedy create angst? If you grew up on Robotech, and can explain some of the plot lines that get garbled in the mix, that one's got a mix of some humor, plenty of battles and something that appears to be drama.

I have a cousin with a form of autism (Asperger's Syndrome), and he loves anime with a passion. He was into Pokemon, DBZ, Tenchi Muyo!, Sailor Moon, Yugioh, and Zoids before I even started to show them (him and his sister) other stuff. I eventually showed them/read to them Trigun, Inu Yasha, Oh! My Goddess!, Spirited Away, Naruto, Princess Mononoke and Fushigi Yugi.

Although, if you are going to watch anime with your brother, watch it dubbed. My cousins couldn't keep up with the subtitles, and I ended up having to read them all >_<. *sigh* Still, they loved it too much, and I wasn't going to dissapoint them.

NEVER mention aspergers in my precence I've been unjustly diagnosed with it and I've been working like a mad man to prove I don't have it. The very mention of Aspergers makes my blood boil. But you diddn't know that but for future reference folks.

Anyways I have some of the above mentioned. (Trigun, Ah My goddess)

Anyways good suggestions. I was thinking of Checking Naruto but it's not dubbed yet. I do have some of the manga though.

It's a mental illness. One of the symptons of it is that you draw far into your mind. Some mainly see geometric patterns. That's why they're good at puzzles.

Pretty much anything on Toonami is ok to watch. I'd stay away from Rurouni Kenshin because the editing isn't always constant.

That sucks that you were misdiagnosed... I think psychologists are a little to trigger happy with labeling people.

I must say though, that my little brother was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome and I'm certain he really has it.... He is medicated too, and it really helps.

I certainly hope that you don't have to take mood altering medication for somehting you don't really have though... -_-;

Onto the real subject: I might suggest showing animes such as card captor sakura and st. tail. They may seem girlie and shojo and stuff, but i know a lot of male people who have enjoyed watching them, and they are also fairly straightforeward on several levels so they might not be as confusing.

I might have to be medicated for what I really do have. I think in reality I'm Manic depressive. All the Aspergers traits I have fit under a number of disorders which makes what I have really hard to pin down. Some people that checked me out diddn't even know what to label me. So anyways I think I have some anxiety Disorder or a Manic depressive disorder. My perception of time can be off too. Recently I started having feelings of No present just Past and Future. It hasn't been as Severe as it was when it started in may though.

Anyways I think my brother would like CCS. He's starting to get get into girls so.......I think he has a crush on Laura from Hamtaro.

I wonder what he'd think of Lain. I know it has some adult themes in it but I don't think he'd understand it but the light patterns and imagery might facinate him.

I don't know if I'd even go as far as to recommend Tamers... nothing where main or supporting characters die or are dynamic (change their personality entirely over the course of the story).
As far as movies go, try Ghibli or the Pikachu movies.
If you want a TV show, your best bet would probably be Pokemon... I don't know. I'll ask my mom (she's a divertiy teacher and knows alot more about autistism then I do.) and post more later later. ^^;;;

I never meant to offend you, I am just telling what I know. He is doing better than he ever has before...

I don't think I'd use Rain Man to relate to autism. What level of autism is he? I think Dustin Hoffman did a horrible portrayal of autism - he made it look as if autism is a form of retardation - which it isn't. Go to this site if you would like to find out what autism is:

For now, I've been around so many children with Asperger's and neurological disorders in recent years that I'd hate for people to get the wrong idea of what autism is by that movie. Sorry if I stepped on your toes, bemani. It is constantly misdiagnosed because of the comorbidity - other problems that come with it.

Now, back to topic. I'd look into Little Snow Fairy, Sugar. It is so cute and there is wonderful music in it. Can you let us know what he likes, ie. music, numbers, words, etc....?

Hmm... in the book "Somebody Else's Kids" by Torey Haden (I'd rate it PG-13, just as a warning if anyone decides to read it), the boy, Boo's mother is infact worried that he's retarded. He just has a high level of autism.

Just for the fun of repeating other people, St. Tail and Angelic Layer are excellent titles. Princess Nine might be another one to look into. The dub has a few swears every once in a while, and all the characters are colorful and unique. A Little Snow Fairy Sugar is cute, clean, but not so basic that drives adults away (the adorable art does that!). Um, Risky Safety is really good too. Old Phil mentioned Robotech, that's a good one if older art isn't minded. I'll let you know if I think of some more!

She would not recommend CCS, so forget that. ^^;;; She says it has too much emotional involvement.
However, she highly recommended Digimon, because of its use of systems. ^_^V
