Hello,
_____My name is Christopher Kelsey. I was wondering how many people here write novel sized works. Normally I spend all my time over on another board, but I’ve been dropping by here for over a year now. If you want to check out my work, go by http://www.Vailion.com. I’ll be back later to chat up some more.

I've written three stories around the 90,000 word mark, which is roughly the size of many novels. Also, one story of 187,000 words, which is probably too big for a novel.

Interesting site; it is a shame I won't be able to look into it further.

Wow, UC, I just stumbled onto this thread, and i saw your remarks about the size of your works. What are they about? Have you ever tried having them published?

I would probably know more about this if i spent more time in the writing forum, but I rarly if ever stop by here.

Uc pseudonym,
_____Do you have you're work online? I put all of mine up free to read – as I edit it. I have one novel written, another half done in the series, massive amounts of notes, a language written (that I’m editing), one complete game story line, two or three incomplete story lines, a picture book, and several short stories done. That’s not really what makes me feel good, it’s the reviews I have and the interview. Something about nice comments from others is uplifting – now if I could completely ignore the people that seem to hate my work.
_____By the way, I understand the time problem. I never seem to have enough time when I need it, and too much time when it’s wasted away.

Some of those works are fanfiction, so they cannot be published. Those that are original I have never released on the internet, for the reason that I am considering publication in some manner.

The fanfiction can be found at Fanfiction.net under the penname "uncreative pseudonym." As mentioned earlier in this post, the rest is not available for reading.

There will always be those people. It is an extremely critical skill for every author to be able to listen to these people, consider if they have something valuable to say and then think nothing more of it if they don't. By the previous sentence I in no way claim to actually have this skill.

Hmm... well, I have some stories written, but I'm not sure if they qualify for novels or not; I've written hmm... well, six finished stories. I'm not sure of the word count of the first, horrible one I wrote when I was about 10 >_< which needs storyline and so much ediitng it would be easier to rewrite it (lol; but it's still good to look back and see where I've improved. It's also cool to see the sort of ideas that were bouncing around my head back then too) but the rest are in between 20,000-30,000 words, roughly.
Like UC, I haven't put these on the internet because I intend on submitting them for publication at some point.

Photosoph,
_____The size works you are mentioning are novelas if I remmember right. Also, putting your work online dosn't harm your ability to be published. In my case, it has greatly improved my chances. I have publishers, review editors, and fans reading at my site -- now that can't be a bad thing.
Warrior 4 Jesus,
_____I'll go over there and see if I've seen that work or not. One side note you might want to know, I've updated my site with little .gifs everywhere. Maybe I should post some of my .gif work here.

That depends upon the method of publication and (especially) the publisher. Some of the larger New York houses won't accept anything that has been read in any other format. Tokyopop (not exactly a publisher of novels, but similar and perhaps related) considers internet publication an invalidation of an entry.

However, times are changing. The internet may well be an effective way of catching the attention of publishers.

I really enjoyed your site and your writing C.A. Kelsey. ^_______^ The sections I read were very enjoyable - great characterization and dialogue. I'll mark it in my favorites and show a friend of mine who is also into fantasy writing.

I've been writing for awhile. I'm not as prolific now as I was in the 90's. I had written three novels and attempted to publish two. I have a folder of rejection letters. I stopped writing after something personal happened in the late 90's and also stopped attempting to be published. The worst part of writing large works, is that you feel you should be published after awhile, since you've put so much time and effort into it. ^_^;;

Recently, I did start writing again and even sent out some query letters for a novella I wrote. Again, the rejection - ah well. I really hate doing the whole "query letter" thing. -__-)\;;;

Anyway these days I'm working on a manga with an artist friend; thus, I have a script. I've written scripts, animation scripts, manga scripts and I have other works. I don't know how to maintain a site, so I haven't got one. Some of my work is youth fiction and I am working on a fantasy trilogy and getting feedback with another fantasy writing friend. Fantasy is new to me, my novels in the past were all crime fiction - it was something I knew about at the time.

Anyway, I hope you the best with your writing, you're very good. It's nice finding something enjoyable to read from a young author. ^_____^

YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

I suppose you're right, but who knows if it's paranoia or not; I just prefer to keep my work off-line -well, anything that's taken me a long time to write. I don't mind short stories being online so much.
Whoot! So they are novels. ^_^/

I'm glad you're giving writing another go, Chloe; and I hope you really enjoy writing in the fantasy genre.

I guess I'm worried about sending stuff to a publisher; so for the moment I'm just going over them and editing. I also know that each time I finish a novel I can see the improvement, so I figure if I just keep writing, I'll get better; and maybe when I'm better I can edit/rewrite some older stories to increase their quality. I know I've heard many stories of well-known authors who've gotten rejection letters from everywhere they sent until finally someone accepted them, or they self-published, but I guess I'm a little tentative about sending my writings to a publisher anyway. I know I will send my stories someday though; so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Until then I'll just enjoy getting some of those niggly story ideas out of my head.

Here's to the joy of writing!

I have no hopes of my work ever being published in any way, shape or form. I just write because it gives me something to do. I would put my work online, but it seems that people aren't really interested...

I will check out some of your stuff.

uc pseudonym,
_____It's encoraged by some publishers to have some of your work online. Others are worried that the internet will rip profits from them. Old horrer man himself is self publishing, what was his name, Steven King. I would deffinitly say times are changing and so is what publishers accapt.

true_noir_chloe,
_____I understand the rejection thing. I was rejected in under a week by one company. I just laugh at it and move on. I'm big on this stuff on another board.
_____My big problem is my lack of art skills. I'm great at .gif work, but doing sceans and so forth is not my thing. I can't even draw a tree right. I've tried to get my brother to illistrate a bit of my work, you know, just some inspiring things, but he dosn't seem to care for it. I'm just glad I could draw my own maps. :)
_____Oh, if you go to the links portion of my site, I have a good list of publishers to go after. There may be some that you haven't gone after.

Photosoph,
_____Another perk to having your work online, is that people can catch spelling and wrong word problems. The downside is arguments about camma placment and so forth.

ShiroiHikari,
_____What do you write exactly?

To everyone,
_____I just changed the whole layout of the site, and added another chapter to the main book.

the easiest way to describe what I write is drama. but there are other elements too. I'm mostly just working on one project; I've been working on it since approximately 1999. to be honest, it'd probably make a better shoujo manga than a book, but I'm no artist and don't have the money to pay one, haha.

I read some of your short stories. I'm not a very good critic, so I'll just say that it's pretty good stuff. I admire anybody who can write short stories, because I can't do it at all.

_____I get a bit of crits on my short stories. Thanks for the input. Their just from me when I'm board or just need to write. I make it a point to write at least 200 words a day, but I often go well over 500. I post the short stories that come out of those, well the ones I deem ok to put online. Much of my short work is very harsh.

We don't ban quite that easily. You'd have to be pretty explicit in describing your descriptions of torture and continue doing it to even be striked (a preemptive step before banning). But that will do]I have no idea why I'm posting here -- what's wrong with me?
