I was reading the Acts of Gord and came across a story of his about this sort of thing.

Two (fairly young) girls had come in his store and wanted to rent an Anime movie.... one not for kids... they headed back to the car and came back with the father of one of them, who insisted this was too much trouble for a cartoon, but that he should just rent the thing to them. The Gord tried to explain, but some people just won't listen (or understand).

Needless to say it was less than an hour (if I remember) when the father came back in all in a huff, wanting to know why he rented such things to his kid!

The guy wised up and asked about the next one he got for them.

Gotta know what your kids are into... which reminds me of another story, but it's way off topic (like I'm not now

)

reminds me of a friend's experience. The blurb on the back was somewhat... deceptive (basically was it a pretty nasty hentai title), and the film was unrated. Anyways, the film turned out to be not what he was expecting based on the packaging (to say the least). So he tried to return it. Of course, the video store wouldn't accept the return unless the product was damaged. So the girl at the desk runs the tape on the VCR (the tape not being rewound, was at a scene where this fellow had stopped watching). Thing is, this VCR's hooked up to all the monitors in the store, the ones that they show all the previews on....

OMDH! (don't ask...) That is so bad... I am pretty mad at suncoast, as they put it like this--->

And I mean, they have all their adult tapes facing the anime in this narrow litle corner of the room and there's anime in there like Pokemon and DBZ... Plus they are rediculously expensive, so I don't like shopping there... That, and the fact that DBZ could logically be placed right next to "End of Evangelion" and they also have some soft hentai in their collections that aren't always clearly marked and thrown right in with Card Captor Sakura or Escaflowne or Grave of the Fireflies...

Speaking of which, the american movies got the same sort of treatment in a video rental place I went to in mexico. I mean, "Snow White" could get placed right next to "Snowy White Skin" or something... (that's not a real title, I'm just trying to come up with something to explain...) it made it hard to browse the video stores down there...

My Suncoast has an entire wall dedicated to anime, the adult films are on another shelf a few feet away (facing toward the anime wall). The kids movies (Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher ect.) are all the way back in a small corner of the store.

woah this got off topic....

my two bits..I didnt see any porn in our suncoasts anime section but I was 1/2 blind last time ...no glasses. They didn't have all that great a selection either tho...no FLCL. Oh and Akira the movie was good in my opinion, but the manga was far superior.

The porn isn't mixed in with the anime. It's just WAY too close to the anime section. My local Suncoast seems to have greatly increased their anime selection this year. I also noticed that Gamestop is stocking more anime than they used too.

I recently saw this anime... It was quite violent and disturbing, but the deeper messages and perspectives on humanity were quite interesting and thought-provoking.

Overall, it wasn't my type of movie, but it was certainly an interesting experience. I'll have to watch it again to fully understand it, however.

Like stated in the starting post, I thought the animation was excellent...the ending was so random though, I found that a bit stupid....And the music also grated on my nerves.. it just sounded like people groaning and screaming. The plot and the action somehow kept the movie interesting, though.

It's a very bizarre and powerful anime experience. I thought that the ending was a bit... out there, but it was sort of a relief after

[spoiler]that disgusting mutation scene[/spoiler]. I actually liked the music, however, especially the tribal drums. The chanting did start to get old, however.

Nice avatar, by the way...Is that Nabuca? I liked Now and Then/Here and There a lot.

I DID that once. I had Ghost in the Shell to use for the test disc when I was buying a DVD player. Unfortunately, I forgot that the first scene was Motoko's naked bungee jump-- which was broadcast on all the TVs at Good Guys :sweat:

The clerk and I both decided it was best that I left right then...

As For Akira itself, I think it gained the acclaim it did because it came out before Disney regained it's reputation (in the 80's their animation was a joke) and was so different (violence etc) than the American norm. Personally, I was really unimpressed by the story.

I recommend the manga though.

i have read the manga (6 ginormus volumes) and i was quite glad that the ending turned out very good and happy. Very though provoking indeed

The manga had some anti-american overtones in the last couple of volumes. This would have been when US-Japanese relations were kind of strained during the late 80's early 90's trade wars.

Just a throw-away joke (and judging by the response, I guess I should throw it away).

Yeah, that was it. It was as if the US came to assist the victims of the tsunami and were attacked as imperialists for doing so. Of course, Katsuhiro Otomo tends to be somewhat political in his works.

At least it wasn't like "Silent Service"...

My ideas on this movie, based on the ending alone, is as follows:

You've got to be both a genius and a very sick person to come up with that ending. I mean, that part at the end is just plain sick (you know what I mean) but in the context of the story it seems almost a perfectly logical conclusion (in its own weird way).

That said, animation was good.
