What was the very first RPG ever made as a video game?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

What was the very first RPG ever made as a video game?

The title is pretty self-explanitory. Tons of people have told me its Dungeons and Dragons. Well?

I believe, D&D was the first pen and paper RPG, but I don't know much about pen and paper RPGs, minus War Hammer 40k. Anyways, I think the first RPG on a console was Dragon Warrior for the NES or at least that was the first popular RPG. There most likely was a few text-based RPGs on the computer before then or so I assume.

Or Paper and Pencil, whatever it's called. Anyways, it's the original way to play RPG, where a bunch of people sit around a table and pretend to go on a quest set up by the DM/GM (Dungeon/Game Master). It's more or less a really complex and deep board game. -You use dice to calculate attack damage and stuff like that.

Here's a funny example:

I`ve seen the flash movie before. Is that the same guy that made 8 Bit Theatre?

Anyways, Dungeons and Dragons was a videogame out on Atari.

Adventure, a game for an old Atari system, is generally considered the first RPG ever made. RPG is a loose term for it though.... you play as a dot moving through areas picking up keys and stuff...... never played so I can't give an accurate description. Although it's possible a D&D game could have been released prior..... it wouldn't be considered a 'true' RPG since it's based on a liscensed Pen and Paper game.

The true beginning for the realm of RPG's lies in Dragon Quest/Warrior.

Yeah, RPGs as we know them on video game systems were started by Dragon Warrior, and it does my heart good to see someone else familiar with the game Adventure for Atari. :D

The first computer RPGs, though, were indeed text-based games as someone stated earlier. Zork was among the leading examples of this type of game.

But if you want the first RPG ever, that's a little bit more difficult to determine. Dungeons and Dragons was released in the early 70's, I believe, though I would be hesitant to state it was the first RPG ever.

I herd Dragon Quest is way older than FF. Its almost a decade since they made the 7th one and they`re JUST coming out with the 8th one.....? Were the DQ games connected and will I be able to buy in the original on Game Boy Color in English now?

I've only played Dragon Warriors 1-3.

DW 2 is a direct sequel to DW 1. DW 3 is a prequel to DW 1. So the first three do indeed have a lot to do with each other. I've never played any of the others, though the series didn't evolve, so it doesn't bother me much. Even in DW 7 for the Playstation, there were still frame shots of the monsters and lines representing sword slashes. Not my cup of tea.

Possibly Zork from 1977, I mean it's text based but still technically a Video Game

I thought the very first PC RPG was the predecessor to NetHack which was just called rogue.

Wow a gravedig of almost six years. Probably one of the biggest gravedigs I've ever seen.

...did I really say those things about my beloved Dragon Quest games? To think how far I've come in these six years. I am ashamed of my past comments. For the record, Dragon Quest 7 is totally awesome.

LOL I was wrong, I just looked it up on wikipedeia, Rogue was the first RPG to use askii graphics and it came out in 1980 which was after Zork from '77... Zork is a fun game. But I was sure there was one RPG in the text adventure/ifiction that predated even Zork. The very first video game RPG was Colossal Cave Adventure which was Zorks daddy or grand-daddy if you will.

Actually, Zork is predated by Adventure (the text-adventure came, not the Atari game; sometimes called Colossal Cave Adventure), which I've played some. I haven't beaten it though. It's really hard. It's also the origin of the Maze of Twisty Little Passages, All Different, and the Maze of Twisty Little Passages, All Alike.

To give you a sense of its age, I played it on an Amiga. On a floppy disk entitled "Golden oldies".
