As opposed to NGE, this series is about love and hope triumphing.
As for the whole 'false religion' and 'god' stuff:
Ayato, and the Mu, are simply beings from another 'dimension' and one of them is trying to reshape the world for the mulians and without humans. They do call the RahX a god, but it is a created program, and they all know that. there is nothing that connotes blasphemy or even comparison to the Real God. And as opposed to nge, it ends beautifully.
So I don't see that it should bother you. But like the others have said, rent the first disk or 2, and see how it affects you. I got absolutely nothing bad from it. I was rather impressed, in fact, with how love and hope were represented.
So there is a positive take on it. Hope it helps...
Domo arigatou, I think that really helped alot. I definitely want to see this now, and now have somewhat higher expectations. ^^
Ok, I saw Akira and GitS. Akira was not so good. I didn't like it myself. There are various reasons. The violence is graphic, too graphic IMO.
We really didn't need to see bloody limbs falling from the ceiling in that one part, and I was disgusted when poor Kaori was crushed like that. That gross burst of blood. o_O
Then there's the part where Kaori is attacked by that gang and they tear off her shirt clearly exposing her...you know...in detail. That just wasn't needed. And it was alot more graphic than I expected. I heard about it but from what the review said it didn't sound that bad. Plus I just don't like the evolution talk in that one scene and how Akira is referred to several times as a god or Messiah. He isn't supposed to be, but it still bothered me. As Crossdive said, it seemed too new age.
I liked GitS, I wasn't happy with the nudity, thankfully it wasn't fanservicey, but it did get annoying at points. It was a complicated story, and I was dissatisfied with the ending because it seemed so up in the air. But I guess that's why we have the sequel. I'll see that very soon.
