Question about Ai Yori Aoshi

Postby Petite Soeur » Fri Apr 08, 2005 5:48 pm

I want to see Ai Yori Aoshi. It looks like a cute, romantic series, and I'm a hopeless romantic :brow:, I went to Colonial Williamsburg last week and made a stop at the Barnes and Nobles subsidiary. I picked up one of the AYA volumes, and when I opened it, I was barraged with excessive fanservice. Is the anime like this? I mean, I don't like fanservice, but I tolerate it if it is done sporadically and tastefully, but this was neither. Excessive fanservice spoils an anime for me, so if you've seen it, please respond.

I thought it was still a lot of fan service in the anime, though broadcast standards required limiting the amount of nudity for anime.

i've seen all of Ai Yori Aoshi and the 2nd series: Enishi. I can tell you, it IS fanservice-ee, however, i can also tell you the manga takes it ALOT farther in detailed breast nudity and stuff than the anime does, in the anime they look like barbie-doll bodies basically. no details or anything. however, Tina Foster still...gropes stuff... and there is, to some ammount, fan service/sexual humor. The first series is my 2nd fave anime all-time (behind InuYasha) because despite the fan service, which can sometimes proove to be for humor purposes, it is an incredibly moving and well-made romance, GO FOR IT!! if you love romance stuff, this is a great anime IMO, give the show a chance though, it gets even better as it goes, it may start a little edgy in places, but the show gets deeper and more moving near the later parts. Don't expect Enishi to be nearly as impressive as the original either, it was good, nothing near the original show though, it is much more filler-ish, it doesn't seem to have anywhere to go in a hurry, or at all, or so it seems they felt that way. You are missing out big-time if you don't see this one, trust me ;) this is THE ROMANCE ANIME!!

I've only read the manga. Yeah....be wary of the fact that there is a lot of nudity, but it is an incredibly beautiful series. I love it.

I do not recommend it for minors (at least the manga). There is just too much nudity. So wait till your 18. lol.

Yes, I just need to pony up the moola. (Kindaichi Case Files manga is my current first anime/manga priority)

I think Steeltemplar has it right for the manga. The anime had fewer problems like Crossdive said-- Barbie Doll nudity. All depends on what you can handle

(Just picked up the Love Hina anime perfect Collection and find it pretty fascinating to see what they had to chop from the manga to get it on to Japanese TV...)

I was thinking of picking up th emanga later. Can you guys describe the detailed nudity? Evangelion has nude breats in thier but is thier also more in this series? like anyways below the belt?

I am usually good with fan service and can tolerate it but if it gets excessive, then it's hands off.

Hmm, not sure what crosses the line by the mod standards, so I'll step carefully. In most manga it's still illegal to discouraged to show genitalia, so "detailed nudity" tends to mean the female breasts drawn anatomically correct.

Most anime tends to make the female figure look like a Barbie doll-- nothing anatomically correct.

You sure you don't mean "not illegal but discouraged"? For your sentence is somewhat incoherant, and in a small period of reading manga I have come across exceptions to this.

Actually, I meant it's "still illegal or discouraged." because of the inconsidstencies

Japanese censorship laws are a funny thing. They seldom enfoce them anymore, but can come down hard any time they choose. So there can be a long string of adult manga with no enforcement and suddenly one title is prosecuted.

I have some Japanese import manga, where two types of censorship are present-- where the author censored himself and where the goernment censored the manga.

So, I guess if I was writing coherently, I might have said "Since portrayal of genitalia is strongly controlled, 'Detailed nudity' would tend to be anatomically correct female breasts."

Not really like LH in the style, though it is a "harem" anime

So the nudity is more detailed then LH?? Cause in LH nothing is truly detailed.

I think those scenes were more included because of the communal role of public bathing than for fanservice (with perhaps a couple of exceptions, like that incident at the beginning), as indicated by the lack of drawing any details. It seems this was further emphasized by the use of bath robes in the Anime.

Yes, the manga version of AYA is detailed. I think most levels of detail depends on the target audience and the standards of the publisher.

Um...actually, it is...I bought the manga for a while, and it was good...but volume 7 was insanely fanservice-y. Yes, they show full frontal nudity of Chika. I decided I wouldn't buy the manga anymore...the anime is better anyway, story-wise and art-wise. To be honest, I thought the manga artwork was nowhere near as good as the anime.

Yet another reason to stick to the anime. :P

the manga is more detailed definately, as has been said, but i don't feel the need to avoid buying/reading/whatevering it entirely. I think the anime should be easily tolerable for the general anime-viewer audience, especially if they already know what is coming. for me, the biggest thing isn't whether you are in extreme detail (though that does play a part) as much as how it is intended and how much of it there is. Ghost in the Shell for example, I really enjoyed, despite constent detailed breast nudity, largely, if not totally because they weren't forcing it in for a sexual reason (or so i felt). In short, as with all things, this will depend on where your limits are, and above all, do you think God is giving you the green light on seeing/reading/etc. it.

Depends on what you mean. Above the waist it certainly is full-frontal (for the manga).

yeah I guess it is. I guess the main thing I'm trying to ask is: Is the only thing that is considered nudity is nude breasts (im trying my hardest to avoid descriptions!)

 Hear you loud and clear. But when it's non porn manga and anime, normally the female breasts are the main object-- except in those that obsess over women's underwear.

ANd because of that stuff I apologize to all the female members of CAA out there for having an XY chromosome set... this is pretty tacky when you get down to it.

ok good. From everything said, I might try it out. I'm a sucker for romance and can't be worse then Evangelion which has 10 pages of nudity :ick: Still a great manga series.
