Tactics! ^-^ Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok is also good. Both series take place in Japan (Meiji era and modern day, respectively), but they revolve around mythology and fantasy elements.

Record of Lodoss War is the quintessential fantasy anime. Knights, Dragons, Wizards... you name it.

I'm not totally sure if it's fantasy or not, but Twelve Kingdoms looked like it was in those lines.

There's Final Fantasy Unlimited, but I've only seen one episode. There's a review for it on this site you might wanna check out.

Slayers, Record of Lodoss War, The Vision of Escaflowne (series), and Magic Knight Rayearth are all excellent fantasy anime. Star Ocean and Scrapped Princess are newer ones. I'd recommend any of the first four, the newer two I'm not as familiar with yet, but I'm planning on checking them out (I have seen the first volume of Star Ocean, that's it).

I'd also say Escaflowne (the series.) That is my favorite fantasy anime.

Ah ha! How could I forget Escaflowne!

I'd also highly reccomend Star Ocean EX - I've seen most of it and it's quite good. ^_^

is Escaflowne the series just a longer verion of the story told in the movie? I saw the movie and thought it was only so-so. Is the series better?

Yes and no as Escaflowne the series is just a longer verion of the movie. The series is better then the movie. There are something that were in the series that wasn't in the movie and something things were change in the movie that didn't in the series.

I'm a fan of Escaflowne the series and the movie was good in its own way, but the series is alot better and had more twists and turns in it then what was in the movie. If you want to know more on the series. You can pm me and I give more info on it. I don't want to give too much away about the series on the board.

Actually, I would say that the series and movie are almost completely unrelated. Sure, they have some characters with the same names, but a lot of character origins, and stuff about Van, Escaflowne, and Hitomi were completely different. The plots weren't even very similar.

I personally preferred the series, simply because it had more time to go into the finer details of the story line. ^_^

Oh, and my user title says "boku no kibou" - my hope.

I would like to have seen Escaflowne but it just sounds too high on false religion and new age stuff in general. The tarot card thing really bothers me too. Shame. :S
As for what I've seen in fantasy, nothing touches InuYasha.
"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6
the tarot cards in Escaflowne didn't bother me too much - by the end of the series Hitomi learns to use things other than tarot cards to decide her future.
I really didn't see too much false religion in it, either, unless concepts of destiny and how to alter it bothers you; but your conviction is your conviction. ^_^ I think Escaflowne is both a bit more mature (due to blood and such, not because of well...o_o yeah) and a bit deeper than most other fantasy animes out there.

Agrees with Kokoro Daisuke. The only thing that could bug anyone about Escaflowne is blood and a few bad words. Other then that, its like one of the cleanest fantasy animes out there.

While I agree that the end view of the tarot cards in the series is that they are bad, I also understand people who want to stay away from the series. It could cause an impressionable person to wander astray. It's a very valid concern, especially if you have younger siblings.

But the cards play a big part throughout the series right? So it still counts. And the whole "alter your fate" does bother me, since God knows what'll happen, we can't change it. I know it's just fiction but I have my limits and I think this is just one I'm going to have to skip.
