Robin Williams is an anime fan?

Postby Jeikobu » Sun Mar 13, 2005 12:49 pm

Cool, I never knew about this until I read it at ANN today.

Q: Did you always like cartoons?

A: I was always a hard-core Warner Bros. fan. Elmer and Daffy and (animator) Tex Avery. I collect a lot of Japanese anime. I am waiting to see "Steamboy." The Japanese are very aware that animation isn't just for kids to the point of making pornography. They make deeply dark movies, science-fiction movies.

AHHHHH! That's crazy awesome!!! Robin Williams can sometimes be a little R-rated when it comes to his stand-up, but overall, I think he is one of the most hilarious men on the planet!! AND he watches anime! That's supercool, right there.

I love his line at the end of Good Will Hunting, but I shan't repeat it here.

True but a bad example to use. That's why most of the non-anime people think anime is just "cartoon porn".

Perhaps, but is important that we understand that that is out there, too. If we just ignore it, it will come back to bite us.

Indeed. The world already knows that the Japanese create porn anime.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Well, I guess the writers of "Robots" (the new CG movie) knew that when they gave Robin Williams' character the line, "Give me big anime eyes!" when he was taking photographs of the main character.

Oh, and yeah, that toy in "One Hour Photo" probably played into that, too. (But I hated that movie when it got filthy toward the end.)

While I was mildly suprised to hear Williams say it, I'm glad he mentioned the pornography bit. Notice how he worded it : "to the point of"--makes a HUGE difference. Osaka's right, if we ignore it or try to downplay that fact, it'll just bite us. But I think if we're honest that yes, that trash exists, it makes us look more informed and in turn informs the uneducated public.

Yeah, I was pretty excited to hear this. Apparently he also likes video games. I remember hearing him talk about playing Half-Life 2 and something else in an interview on a show called The Screen Savers. He also mentioned waiting to see Steamboy then, though I think he called it a Miyazaki film, which sorta confused me...
