Purchasing anime with a box

Postby suteki-san » Tue Mar 08, 2005 5:00 pm

Who here, when they have found an anime they would like to collect, buys the box to complement the first volume? I only have two series that I have with a box, Azumanga Daioh and Last Exile and the rest of my collection I have without one.

Personally I think they're a nice organizational thing to keep the DVD's together, as well as something pretty to look at. Though I am careful with my anime spending and I don't get a boxset unless I'm really interested in the series (made the mistake with the LE set of which I still have the first DVD.)

I agree... I really like art boxes. The only one I have is Vandread. Wish I had the money to buy both GTO art boxes. Also, the other day I bought "Figure 17" collection for $49.99 from Fry's (US release from ADV). ALthough it's all in a cheap, plastic holding like Berserk or Princess 9, it's well worth it to save $100. Oh and the casing looks nice, so no complaints here. But yes, I like artboxes because it really gives that series a "finished" look. PLus they look cool :)

I have Last Exile, but it hasn't been released here as a box set so I had to buy them seperately. I have the first volume of Noir which came with a t-shirt and box, so the LE dvds are housed in the Noir box. Noir boxset was released about a week ago so when I've got the money (could be ages) I'll be getting that.
Anyone know if you can purchase the box seperately? I would love to have the LE box instead of the Noir one. Thanks!

Yeah, I like artboxes, too. I had bought several boxed sets before, which was nice, but Azumanga Daioh was the first anime that I started off with the 1st disc + artbox combo. When I finished the series, it felt more like an accomplishment or something to have purchased the series in that way, as sliding the last disc into the box was just oddly satisfying. It made me feel like I was an anime collector, not just an anime fan.

I think that makes sense.

They sell individual art boxes. Not sure if they have LE but it's worth checking out.

edit: I don't believe they sell Last Exile box seperatly but they do sell the box w/ the first dvd...

crap, im just glad adv and other bigname companies got smarter. i remeber when youd buy dvds as they got released, and had no orginization. at least know they start series by usually adding a box to store crap in with the 1st dvd. though im still bitter about not getting to get a box fro gundam wing, gto, excell and the kenshin series.

I have just one little problem about the art boxes. I really don't like it when they make the art box/vol 1 into a LE or SE deal.

Sure they are limited and all, but does that really make them high dollar items. No, because you are buying them to watch the dvd and have a box to put them in.

As for the buying the art box with the first volume in it. I have somewhat stop buying them, because as of late. After the last vol comes out, they will then release a box set with all of the dvd's in them. If you do the math on it, waiting for the full box set will save you money.

If I would have known sooner that they were going to make brick box set for WHR and a box set for WR. I wouldn't have bought the box/vol one set.

Boxes.

Well, to be honest, the only box I've seen that was worth buying was the YuYu darktournament boxes and the RahXephon with movie box.

Most other boxes are cheap crappy cardboard that are just a pathetic excuse for the companies to charge a bunch more :) they bend and tear at the slightest touch.

So there are my feelings on boxes.

As for bricks, I like them. Cheap dvd's, then i just download the original covers and print them off and thinpak them all. Whoohoo for thinkpaks...

I havn't bought a vol/box combo yet, and personally I think they're a rip-off to charge more for it. They SHOULD be used as free promotional swag. That'd make the DVDs sell more because people will feel like they have to fill it up. ^_^ And I'd only buy a box if it looked good and it was a series I REALLY liked (I.E. Not Trigun box, but definately the Last Exile or Full Metal Panic box)

And if your box searching doesn't go so well on rightstuf, you can always try Ebay. Some people sell them once in a while.

Dude don't even get me started on boxes! They stinking rock!!! They're great for organization, and they're typically sturdy, protect your DVDs, look awesome, and in my opinion show off a little anime pride!!! I have the NGE Platinum box (vol. 1-5 so far), Last Exile complete boxset, Noir complete boxset, chrono Crusade (vol. 1-3) so far, Tenchi Universe complete boxset, Wolf's Rain box (vol. 1-5), Peacemaker box (vol. 1-2), Gasaraki complete boxset, and Samurai X OVA boxset collection. The question isn't "why get boxes?", it's "why not get boxes?" :thumb: :eh:  :)

With this I can relate. I recently finished my AzuDaioh box (in which I grabbed the first day it was released) and it really did feel like I had accomplished something after 8 months of collecting the DVD's. The satisfaction of not seeing any empty spaces shows that you are the "collector" of an entire series. Plus when you carry it, you wouldn't be worried about the DVD's falling off anymore since they sort of "stick" on by itself.

Granted they do cost more if you pay for a vol 1+box set, but it does sort of motivate people into getting collecting ALL of the DVD's since you're just waiting for the gaps to fill up. Plus the extra cost of not waiting for the box to complete is definately worth it.

I have a few of my titles in boxes. ADV is usually good about keeping their boxes just a few dollars above the regular single volume price. However, some of the companies tend to be a little pricey with the art box. I keep most of my DVDs in footlockers where they are out of the light and dust and are organized by titles. If they were on a shelf boxes would indeed be a good investment. However, I would prefer to save most of my money for the purchase of the DVDs themselves.

I only buy box sets if I can.

I was irritated when Fruits Basket had no box initially, and Right Stuf charged me $9 after I bought the DVDs full price to get one. At least AnimEigo will send free boxes with their orders on some titles, which I think more vendors should do.

I'm a sucker for boxes, so I echo Shoobie's sentiments.

I'll buy the box with disc one of I can, and I have also spent good money to get empty boxes.

The most money I've spent on just boxes? Well, there's the Kenshin Bento boxes, as well as metal boxes for Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and the title which everyone wants to discuss but can't because they can't be civil about it. The metal boxes are cool, but I'm not sure they are worth the expense.

Art boxes are a very nice thing to have since they look cool and help organize DVDs, but at the same time I can't help but dislike this new trend by anime companies of including an empty box with DVD 1, because to me it just seems like a scheme to get more money. Now instead of paying 29.99 per DVD for an 8 DVD series, you pay that plus an extra 12 or so dollars for a box as well, when a REAL box set that includes all the DVDs would be much cheaper.

For now I have no boxes, but then I've just started collecting. Gonna try to get boxes for so many series as possible, though I can't order the net cause those high prices (they should have been for free :p). They seems nice, and is good for organizing :D
Is it possible to buy Artboxes without DVD? Don't have a box for my .hack//SIGN DVD's :(

Gonna get the Gundam SEED DVD 1 (Hyb): Grim Reality + Artbox + CD Limited Edition. Nice, and it's with a CD :D
