Dubs > Subs

Postby Chaps » Wed Feb 23, 2005 7:24 pm

Haha, not really (in my humble opinion). I DO prefer subs over dubs, but I thought that was a nice topic title.

Anyhow, the question is- are there any anime that you've watched where you actually preferred the dubbed version over the subbed version (in other words, where the english seiyuu cast did an equal or better job than the Japanese cast)?

Personally, there are only a few, but still few where I enjoyed the dub more...

Cowboy Bebop/Movie...I really liked the voice acting in this one...the mouths even matched their voices pretty decently..

.hack//sign - This is more either or for me, since both the english and Japanese cast I think did well (the Mimiru in the Japanese I thought was really talented though, but then the English Mimiru did a good job as well).

FLCL- Uhh this should be in a 'misc' category, because...The voice acting was pretty good for a dub, but dubs are especially convenient for this show since they talk so fast. :P

 I was gonna ask if you wanted to start World War III here.

Anyways, I think the only dub I'd prefer unquestioningly is Cowboy Bebop. ^^;

Man, what's with all the {subs, dubs} threads lately?

Myself, Bebop, YUA! and Ranma would fall in this category.

For sheer sadism, you ought to watch the subbed version of "Elf Princess Rane", where judging by the speed of talking, the crew must have been taking amphetimines by the fistful...

I always prefer the sub, but there are a few that weren't bad:
Cowboy Bebop
The Ping Pong Club
...and that's really about all...

Good question and both active...

If I had to guess it's probably spilling over from the Naruto debate where the fansubbers are becoming militant sub fans (lot of ticked people over the fact that the series starts at episode 1 and no more new episodes until they catch up...

I might be in the minority in this, but I prefer watching Cowboy Bebop subbed.

The only example of a dub that I prefer over the sub that comes immediately to mind is Hellsing. The Japanese voice acting was good, too, but since the series is set in Britain, it just makes sense for the voices to be in English. Besides, one can't help but love the British accents.

Oh, I forgot: There is one anime where I prefer the dub:
Kiki's Delivery Service. Phil Hartman's Jiji is better than the Japanese VA's. The one time I didn't mind the changes...

And as for Super Milk Chan, I can't imagine anyone sitting through more than 10-20 minutes on any language option before smashing the TV with an axe...

Sorry, I was suprised that they made volume 2.

lol, Cowboy Bebop is always a sterotype in these kind of topics. I was really only impressed with Wendee Lee's performance, because she almost always rocks, but the others...Steve Blum annoys sometimes. Plus the japanese version has some great voice actors, like Megumi Hayashibara.

anyway, Anime where I like the dub more than the sub??

Magic Knight Rayerth TV (NOT the Manga Entertainment OVA!)
His and Her Circumstances
Slayers
Fushigi Yugi
Shamanic Princess
Tenchi Muyo
Final Fantasy Unlimited (Maybe, it's been awhile since I saw it in Japanese. I'm going with this conclusion just because I enjoyed it more the second time I watched it through, in english, although it could have been for other reasons)

I must note though that in all those cases, except for Shamanic Princess and FF U, I saw the english version first, so that may have colored my opinion.

hm...can't say i've seen enough in both to have any real opinion. But I did find the Kenshin's voice a little odd and high pitched at first(i guess i still do, but i've only watched a few subs so i'm giving it time) and also random other things which I (of course) can't remember now. :P

<<Steve Blum annoys sometimes.>>
Ooh, I love him to death. *huggles Steve Blum* I especially like to watch the Big O and hear him talking to "Angel", heh heh... Tidus20 thinks I'm insane. I had a lot of fun watching the episode from Tuesday.

I like the dub of Trigun, but then I don't. I think everyone's voices are suitable, but there are some little weird things to it. Like in the episode
where Rem is cutting Vash's hair,
before she spikes it, she says in the Japanese that she's never noticed before, but his hair is almost curly. In the English version, she says that she's never noticed how handsome he was. Not that that really matters, I just noticed it. And they pronounce "Vash" with an English "a", "HOPpard" as "HOHpart", and "Le-on-off" as "Le-WON-off".... I dunno, I just think it's weird.
Besides, in like the fifth episode, "Hard Puncher", Vash says in the English that until he finds "this man you're after", he has to keep moving. The man that girl's after? Huh? Of course, in the Japanese, he said, "The man I'm after", which of course refers to
Knives Millions.
Think happy thoughts.

None. I will always prefer subs over dubs. I will prefer raw over dubs if a sub isn't available.

I perfer all my anime to be dubbed. Any anime released in Region 1 I always have it on the english track, unless there isn't one. Otherwise, I'll watch it subbed.

Although I perfer dubbs, I can tolerate most subbs. The ones I like for the most part are from: Evangelion, Love Hina, Cowboy Bebop and Scrapped Princess are pretty good. Also, since Kimagure Orange Road TV doesn't offer a dubbed track I have no choice :P. Still okay with me.

Dubbed all the way for: GTO, Crest of Stars (including Banner) and Kaedio Star... Oh and Fighting Spirit (AKA Ippo); though many whould disagree... :(

I almost always prefer subs over dubs, but I'm making myself get used to dubs since I have the Anime Network now. Fruits Basket was teh first anime I could stand watching in dub, and after that I trained myself to tolerate dubs. Before Furuba I hated all dubs with a passion and wanted to claw my ears off every time I heard one. Inuyasha still does this to me... I HATE THE IY DUB! ;;_;; they ruined one of my favorite series....

ADV does the best dubs I think... and dubs are getting much better recently. I have to admit, Cowboy Bebop has to be the best dub ever, but I watched most of it in subs. I'll have to refresh my memory and watch it on CN again.

It's pretty easy for me since most of the anime I really watch has good dubbing.

It's somewhat like ren and stimpy, I find it dull and boring, I can't beleive that Adult Swim got rid of Bebop, when I was about to tape the only episode I missed, Episode 24!!!!

Rock on, yo! You get a hundred cool points.

Ranma, El-Hazard, Those Who Hunt Elves, and Mahoromatic are the only anime where I prefer the dub over the sub. Oh, wait...almost forgot Tenchi Muyo.

Trigun was pretty good dubbed, though I haven't seen the subbed version of it, so I can't say if I like it better subbed or not.

Uh it hasn't been taken off in quite awhile.

http://schedule.adultswim.com/servlet/ScheduleServlet?action=viewAll&showID=319442&show=Cowboy+Bebop&filter=as

And besides I'm sure it will stat on for quite awhile longer. They've taken it off like 3 or 4 times since 2001 and it always comes back due to popular demand.

Iwatch dubs more often then subs I prefer it even because I can watch the sction better instead of taking all my time reading.

Plus no matter how bad the worst english dub is when the japanese dub a english show into japanese its probably worse. Example I was watching an anime I bought off the sell rack called crystal triangle the other day it was sub and in the middle of the show there was some terists who hijacked a plain and after a few moments I realized they were speakin in english it was so bad that I go to my friends and we played it and talk about it all the time for a good snicker. "We ar terrristsss......we take ova...........your sheip." (the periods represent pauses in the sentence. and the misspelling is to represent how they sounded. It's hilarious.)

Almost every Japanese version is highly superior to the dub. The only ones I may take the dub over the sub for are Trigun and Lupin the 3rd, because the dub is how I know them. I am not familiar enough with the Japanese versions.

Well, haven't seen much dubbed anime. Only one I've seen a little of dubbed is .hack//SIGN, but I have to say, the Japanese version is much better, even though the English dubs ain't that bad.
Gonna stick to subs anyway, because IMO, the original is always the best. This rule can be said about anything :p
