Miyazaki's characters...strange observation...

Postby Heart of Sword » Sun Feb 20, 2005 6:23 pm

Quite a few characters of Miyazaki's have a scratch beneath their left eye.

First it was Ashitaka. Then Pazu. And Haku had one for a little while in Spirited Away.

What's with the scratch???

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Uh...Miyazaki-sensei's character's lead dangerous lives? I dunno. It's a common place to get a scratch, apparently.
Think happy thoughts.

Don't know about Ashitaka (mainly because I don't know what movie you're talking about), but that is an interesting observation. But I have also seen that happen in Sailor Moon.

Never really paid attention to that, really. Could just be to show the struggle they've gone through in life. Ashitaka is a warrior, kinda expected to be cut up. Pazu was a boy working hard to make a living in a mine shaft. Haku was a brash boy and dragon. The scratch matches all of their lives/personalities.

I guess the the scratch just goes to show that these kids are tough and ain't no pretty boys

Yeah but it's always the SAME SIZE and in the SAME PLACE.

Maybe Miyazaki's got one too. :P

It's an occupational hazard.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Very observant, Heart of Sword. I have no idea why it is (I'm incline to agree with Osaka ;)) but I'm impressed it was noticed. ^^

It might be some little signature mark that he puts on all the main guy characters just for the heck of it...

Most of his characters look the same from one movie to the next. Main boy characters, girl characters, side characters...you'll see the same basic design in each film.

We might as well discuss why Miyazaki is so fascinated by pigs. There's a pig somewhere in most of his anime.

The only ones that have pigs that come to my mind are Spirited Away and Porco Rosso. Then there's that TV Spot thing, whatever it's called (has the small green pig with huge eyes).

Actually there are pigs in:

Spirited Away
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky (Briefly)
And I believe I saw some piglets on the tapestry in the beginning of "Nausicaa".
