personally i hate DUBBED things... before i came to NARUTO! which is my favorite anime (and is also going LICENSED to CARTOON NETWORK.. -_-) i liked YUGIOH which im sure everyone knows... it was a very fun little anime... btu the voices were HORRIBLE.. compared to ORIGINAL japanese voices.. it REAKS.

I watch dubs (except on long-running shows like the ones you're talking about) but I also like the subs. Dubs are usually horrible, but sometimes they're nice to hear.^_^

Dubs are an unnecessary risk, and as you learn more Japanese, it just gets in the way.

I seem to be the only dub freak around here...Because my love of dubs, I've been labeled a "false otaku" on several boards. Reason I watch dubs is when I do most of my anime watching is when I am drawing. So in order to go with the story, I watch it in English. Two animes that I have YET to view in japanese and I doubt I ever will is Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. They are absoutely awesome subs.

However, I do like some anime subbed. Such as Hellsing and Love Hina (ack! I am ashamed that Wendee Lee was in such a horrible dub!).

So I usuall watch dubs unless I fee like watching it in Japanese. People who get ticked off at me cause I watch subs and stuff just crack me up. They act like it's the most evil, most vile, most un-otaku thing ever.

Shin Getter Robo is without a doubt; the greatest dub ever.

Instead of translating the "plot", ADV totally changed almost every sentence.

Not only is this good, but it makes the series unintentionally funny. The voive acting is so over-the-top it's hard not to smile...

Especially with lines like: "Explain it to me in a way that I would understand!!"
Or: "Getter Beam.....YES!"

As a general rule I stick to subs. A) I like the voices better B) it helps me with the Japanese classes I take. Oh yes, and sometimes dubs take "artistic liberties" and add a whole mess of swears to the dialogue (Saiyuki, for example. ._.)

The two dubs I do prefer, though, are Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop.

Nah, I perfer dubbs to be quite honest. I hear so many people say, "how can you like the dubbed version of ____? It was horrible!" Well for some reason, I can't really tell. I'm not anti-sub or anything it's just I don't always want to strain my eyes on hard to read subs (color wise or grammatically). Or perhaps I just want to sit back, relax and watch some anime w/o being forced to read. Mindless entertainment perhaps, but whatever .

Personally, I don't see why everyone hates dubbed. I mean, dubbs are done for the american market. English and Japanese have different tones/pitches... If I watch an anime, I want a kid to sound like a kid and not a deep voiced guy. Plus, I doubt everyone hates dubbed anime, it has a market so they continue to dubb. Personally, I could care less if they changed the names around or voice tone as long as they don't tamper w/ the story.

I think that many people tend to be anti-dub to make themselves feel more like hard-core anime fan. Though I may be wrong, but that's how many here in Austin act. I mean, you don't have to be a person who is obsessed with japanese culture or perfer subs to be good/hard-core "anime fan." It's all about what people perfer.
OVerall, it really doesn't matter to me as long as I get the chance to see it. It's all good.

Well said, I couldn't agree more. That's why there is always a dub track or original japanese track with subs. It's a good way to accommodate both sides

I'm pretty neutral about the sub-dub-debate. Some movies, like "Grave of the Fireflies" must be seen in dub because the voice-acting is pathetic. But other movies, like "Castle of Cagliostro" and "Princess Mononoke" have pretty good dubs.

i pretty much agree with bigsleepj, some anime i cant stand to watch in sub (outlaw star and almost every gundam for example) though some animes i cant stand in dub (love hina, saber marionette (man some of it got annoying)) so i think its a anime specific thing, definetly cant generalize in this situation.

I like subs, but I recognize that dubs have their place. Back in the VHS days, I once loaned my subbed Trigun collection to a friend-- but she turned out to be dyslexic and couldn't watch them.

So long as the company makes quality subs (remember the Moldiver dubtitling anyone?), they can do what they want with the dub.

DVDs only win the sub/dub war if they don't short one in favor of the other...

I take it series by series, if having a slight preference for dubs. If the dubs aren't personally grating to my aesthetic, I see no reason not to watch them. And some have really great ones, like Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop. Those were really great.

And some are horrific. Angelic Layer and Azumanga Daioh are two from recent memory I couldn't stand. I don't mind subs at all, and I find it kind of amusing to pick up on the few Japanese words I know before I see it translated. And of course, there's the series' that haven't been licensed, so I enjoy those subs too.

But I think you're right; DVDs are the best things ever; I'm so happy that I didn't have to sit through more than 2 minutes of the Angelic Layer boxset in English.

BTW, worst line I ever heard in a dub: "Your mother wears army boots!" (as a serious insult O.o )

I tend to know American VA's alot more than Japanese...Take Johnny Young Bosche (Vash from Trigun, one of the Power Rangers, Sasaki from WHR, etc), he's extremely good. However, one VA I loath is Barbra Goodson who voices Kitsune's voice in Love Hina and it just makes me want to take a axe through the t.v.

I watch dub by default, but since I only watch DVD's (wah ha ha I have MOOLAH yo) I can switch at will when the dub becomes unbearable. Some dubs are quite atrocious, while others can be from just bearable to brilliant. Blackjack in my opinion is one of the really good ones. HOwever sometimes the dub and sub are equal--I toggled back and forth with Witch Hunter Robin, as both were well done.

I don't know if I can say if I prefer subbed(or even raw) or dubbed shows, I always go through both usually starting with the dub while the show is being released, then watch it all subbed once I have it all.

Well Dub Vs. Sub?
Sub in general is how Anime truly is and should be, but it does have inconsistences. In certain subs, the translation sucks, but of course if your fluent in Japanese, then it's ok. For the most part, I watch dub, but I really enjoy sub alot more!!

hahahaha funny story the other day i ws cheacking the acurisy of the dub audio on the first cardcaptor sakura movie and my dvd player fliped out on me hahahahahaha. but any who I just realized that it all depends on how lazy I am feeling at the time on weather I watch it subed or dubed most of the time its dubed hahaha.

I just go with, do I feel like reading words today and go with that.

I think that marketability seems to change how dubs are handled: If they think they can market for younger viewers, language and mature themes are toned down (Fushigi Yuugi pretty much downplayed or eliminated every homosexual reference that was made), while shows where they have no chance of marketing to kids tend to be made rather crude/profane (Excel Saga had many four letter words added there)

I perfer dubs , because most dubs I have seen are good. After I watch the dub then I watch the sub. In the beginning dubs were terrible but now must dubs are done very well. The acters who do dubs are very dedicated people who love anime. To call all dubs bad is being unfare to the voice acters.
