I didn't care for that one. The guy spent more time with sfx than story. Would have liked it more if it had focussed on the guy's life and where he was when the messages arrived.

A sort of 84 Charing Cross Road in space would have been nice.

I enjoyed this one. Clean and well written. It was sad :waah!: I was so glad when we got it to rent at work. Definatly worth a rent at least if one hasn't seen it.

I guess the original script allowed for more development of the story.
I understand originally, the guy was supposed to join the military at the end of the story too and go off to find her.
Don't know why that part wasn't made.

This one did have excellent music by the way. I'll have to look up the soundtrack someday.

I personally disliked it.

seemed like the guy was living a kife of regret that slowly dimished over time. this did not sit well with me. i regret things in my life. i regret i did not start things earlier, chase after things earlier, had the guts to go after things that are gone now. but i cherish the things I did go after and did chase after and did obtain. this means i made choices in my life. This anime felt liek the writer was trying to make this guy perpetually live in the past. this is on large part due to what was chosent o be shown and not shown. maybe i missed the whole point. wouldn't be the forst time, but i was simply unimpredded may be the fact that i watched it in dub instead of sub made the difference here. oh well, my $.02

I liked it but not enough to suggest that anyone buy it. If you see it once or twice, then you then you will have no more use for it. That is not a good use of $30.

It is still worth seeing. If you have an anime rental place near you then rent this one. If not, you'll survive.

I bought this title on a whim at 19 dollars at Best Buy and instantly fall in love with it. I find it a hopeless romance and I guess I just like that. I would of liked to see it a bit longer but it still a great piece of work.

The soundtrack is awesome as well. I perosnally love it.

Well, the potential for the long range romance was there, but they spent too much time with space battles. I thought they really missed a good twist with the time it takes to send messages. Maybe something along the lines of the girl being the same age for each of the messages, but the guy being a different age with the receipt of each message: like maybe a month out of high school, a year out, the guy finishes college, gets married, has kids and receives her final message shortly before dying. If you really want to add drama, perhaps add something like the ship being destroyed and their hearing of it on earth before some of her messages arrived-- especially if her last message would have been upbeat when he knows she's dead.

That's how I would have directed it anyway...

Umm... that is in the story.
We see his military uniform hanging in his closet, and he mentions that he finally got the armada duty he was waiting for.
They also do make some mention of the age difference and lag in communications if you pay attention to the newspapers in the same scene as the spoiler.

That is a intresting way of ending but obviously, the director was going for something different. I don't think he wanted to end it upbeat or even on a high note...he wanted to end it filled with questions and ... pretty much hopeless.

I must say though I find myself watching this more than any DVd in my anime collection.

I was planning on seeing this after hearing a lot of good ratings (didn't one guy do almost everything for it?), but I never got around to it...but I guess it's time I checked it out.

Did I completely misinterpret the ending?
I thought he joined the space armada because he was ready to stop putting his own life on hold to wait for her messages, not because he thought he had any possibility of actually finding her again.
Um, that is what's happening.
He doesn't get married because he's waiting for her, as if she's going to show up instead of her next message. (It would change the story significantly if he just went on with life with out her. The point is he couldn't go on with out her. After a few years of laying about, he finally joins the military and goes through the academy training and passes like the girl did before him. The whole process takes many years. We know of the time it takes because the girl tells us how long it will take her message to get to him.
I thought the meaning was perfectly clear. I really didn't need to see it directly to know what was going on.

I think much of the movie is open to interpretation. It was only a half hour, so he didn't have much time to spell things out on every issue.

It certainly wasn't clear to me. I don't remember that part unless it was one of the numerous extras I didn't have patience to sit through

I think this anime is really overated honestly. For one I thought the dubbing was terrible. I had to turn the volume way up to even understand what they were saying half the time. But then when I realized how boring and moapy the dialogue was I wish I kept it down. The characters were likewise boring and one dimensional. Yeah I know it was only 30 minutes and that isn't much time to develop a character for a full movie, but regardless.

The whole cell phone thing was a big gimmick I thought. Because we all know that the Japanese treat their cell phones like a pet and are obsessed with them. I feel it was just an excuse to throw the cell phone text messaging thing in there. Besides you can't tell me that in the future with spacecruisers that travel lightyears, they still use circa late 90's text messaging services... The only good thing was the animation which had a very interesting style, but that didn't save it for me.

Personally, I liked it. It was like watching a cool independent film...except it had what looked like big budget graphics, and it was heart wrenching.

I pray God gives me the creativity to make cool stuff like that too.

I liked it. Pretty impressive for a half-hour film all done on one guy's laptop. I would've liked it to go further, like showing if Mikako and Noboru ever saw each other again. But I guess that's left up to the viewer. ^^

I actually own this title... Well, me freind lended it to me... and we have a dvd burner...

I love this movie. It made me want to cry... The animation was beautiful, though I believe the artist was only okay at drawing the characters.

Mean?...hardly. I don't care if he made it look that good on a Commodore 64 I still thought the premise, the characters, and the story was bad. I was only saying that the Japanese have an obsession with their cell phones. Most new phones over there cost about $300 U.S. while phones a couple months out of date run about $7! And the thing is they still replace their phones 5 or 6 times regularly every year, and nearly every single person in that country owns one. Not saying they're any more materialistic than Westerners, but in the cell phone area...they're a little more obsessed than the rest of the world.
