I would suggest it, which is unusual in this topic. While I won't sing the film's praises, the animation quality was very good, the characters were generally original, the coreography was decent (if you care about that type of thing) and the plot was a bit deeper than most.

I wouldn't put Naruto on my list, but I feel I should mention that while I think it is a high quality show with many good things going for it, I am a bit annoyed with some extreme fans of the series.

Well, in my case, it seemed to be the victim of bad writing and unsympathetic characters. I mean I was rooting for Lady Une-- that's how bad the writing was IMO :P

I've heard good things about it, but the movie puts me in a Catch-22 for my purist ways. Do I opt for the original English or the Japanese dub? :eh:
Plot and chara are most important to me. Art and animation are nice additions, but can't make up for bad plot/chara.

Maybe that's why I am an anime heretic, as the stuff I didn't like on those grounds seem to be quite popular.

Hmm.

I liked the plot of the second one a lot better than the first. The characters are also fairly interesting (D's hand gets a LOT more lines in this one, and a lot of them are pretty funny). So if you're a plot/character guy, you won't be too disappointed with it.

The English dub...was actually pretty good. I haven't seen the original Japanese, so I have nothing to compare it to, but the voices were excellent, IMO, especially D's hand, as I mentioned earlier. I'm mostly a subtitle guy myself, but this was a very good quality dub.

The joke is it was originally done *in* English, so it would gramatically speaking be "original English or Japanese dub".

And for a "dumb confession", I bought the movie when it came out, put it in and was trying to find the JP language option. Took it back to the store, saying the language was defective and only *THEN* found out it was done in English

But they're used to my strange ways because back in the VHS days I once picked up an American movie and asked out of pure habit "Do you have the subbed version?"

I have to say that Cowboy Bebop is WAY too over-rated for my tastes. And although I'm enjoying Full Metal Alchemist, I do think it has been over-rated. It's good, but not as good as everyone has made it out to be.

I'd have to say Ghost in the Shell (the original movie) and Grave of the Fireflies. I loved both of them, but I was expecting more. Plus I ended up watching most of Grave of the Fireflies with my little brother who was constantly asking stupid questions or making annoying comments, therefore making it impossible for me to form any emotion while watching the movie. =_=;; ROD the OVA was kinda overrated too... another one I was expecting too much from. I still thoughoughly enjoyed it.

OH! And NGE! I was expecting so much more.... just wasn't all everyone raved about for me. I'll have to watch it again sometime. I still haven't seen End of Evangelion.

Edit: and to the person who thought Inuyasha was over-rated, it kinda is, but the Japanese release is at least 10X better than the dub. Its amazing how much of a difference the voices make. The series starts out very good, and just sorta spirals downhill past the 100's. Fortunately the manga is still rather interesting. The fanbase for Inuyasha is what makes it so annoying. lol People make it more than it is.

InuYasha hands down followed by Akira, Gundam SEED, .Hacks// or however you say it, Excel Saga (i hated it), Love Hina Again (grrr..totally ruined a great ending) and Wolf's Rain. Oh and FMA is a bit over-rated. Granted it's good but not that good.

I rarely watch anime but I have to defend FMA, Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne and Gundam Wing. :P They were recommended to me by friends and I've enjoyed all of them. Maybe it's because my buddies don't exaggerate or constantly gush about them "OOOOh it's the best show ever!! You've gotta watch it! You're gonna LOVE it! There's something wrong with you if you don't!" They just say, "Hey, I think this is a good anime. Try it whenever you can."

If I had to pick on an anime series, I would respectfully vote for Love Hina because I had guy friends who constantly gushed about how good the series was and showed off their collection of pics, consisting of girls bathing in hot springs or only wearing towels/swimsuits. :shady: Sorry, LH fans, I just can't help being annoyed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop (good but not as good as many people make it out to be), and FLCL come to mind.

Gundam Wing. I liked it. It had a good beginning and a great ending; but when one looks at the big picture, one finds that it had an extremely convoluted plot that demonstrated the dialectic to the extreme. Power was constantly changing hands. Add in the fact that the series itself will leave you confused as to where it stands philosophically (Is total pacifism good? Should I fight back? Should I follow my emotions?), the somewhat boring middle, and the bajillion fans of the show and you've got an overrated anime.

Cowboy Bebop. It's a great series, but it's definitely overrated.

DBZ is overrated by many, but also underrated by many.

I think Gundam SEED is vastly overrated. I felt that it just ripped off the previous Gundams series.
Yeah, I'm that opinionated.

I beg to differ about Grave of the Fireflies. While it is indeed very sad, I do not think that this makes it a bad movie.

While I have seen both subbed and dubbed Inuyasha episodes, and would agree that the Japanese voice-acting is much to be preferred, I wasn't terribly impressed by either version. It is possible that I am biased, since the first episodes I saw were dubbed. I have heard that the manga is better than the anime, but there seems to be a common complaint about both--that the plot never goes anywhere.

Having read a moderate amount of the Inuyasha manga, my opinion is that it felt basically the same as the anime.

Regarding Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust: I would contend that the quality of character development and plot is a highly subjective matter. Yes, those are my primary measuring sticks for anime, but I find that by large different people can reach completely different conclusions from the same series. This is why I mentioned more objective characteristics such as animation quality.

This would go on my list, but I'd rather not be negative in regard to something that some people here like. I won't reiterate why I dislike this so much (though Mave's comment should indicate something of it), save to say that I simply don't feel it has any really redeeming characteristics, and has certainly been rated highly.

I feel Halo is over rated. I found it terribly boring and unoriginal. I have more fun with the 1st Unreal Tournament and I'm not really even into much FPS.

I agree Evangelion is slightly over-rated. I love it to death but it's not the best one out there. Some people view it as a religion....I just view it as a fun and intresting series.

Another series that I find slightly overrated though I love is Rurouni Kenshin...basically cause it's so freakin long. If they only had it up to th eend of the Kyoto Arc, it would of been great but it gets crappier and crappier as it goes beyond that. Plus I find the starting of the series bland and boring until the Kurogasa appears and than it gets un-intresting until the Aoshi arc and than it doesn't gets borring until the Kyoto Arc (when Saitou appears).

I more or less got an official divorce from RK after the Kyoto arc. It struck me as being too much DBZ with implausible chara and moves. The movie, on the other hand was excellent.

^_^; RK is good, but I never did think it lived up to the name of "all pwning anime series" that people give it. It was okay in the beginning, and when I decided to poke a few of the later episodes and I was very very unimpressed.

InuYasha: at first I watched and thought it was good. After I think, 10 episodes, I just... was bored. It doesn't seem that I missed any thing, when I catch an episode the characters are always fighting and searching but nothing has changed. But it's very popular. At my school there are so many girls who it's their favourite show, and I went to the convention and so many people where dressed up. I just don't understand why so many people like it, it's alright, but...

Gundam Seed: At school I have a friend who is extremely obssessed with Japanimé. This is (I think) her favourite show. She talks about it all the time, even if I don't follow anything. So one night, I tried to watch it and.. I was very, very unpleased. The animation was no good to me. The characters seemed too familiar, and the situations between them were mushy to me. I just liked Gundam Wing much better. (and the problem is, that my friend keeps talking to me about it even when I told her I don't watch it.)

I think that's all. (I hope I understood what "over-rated" means...)

I'm a pretty big fan of RK manga but I was quite disappointed with the anime TV series. (-_-);; First, the art isn't that great and secondly, they inserted fillers that had NOTHING to do with the original story in the manga! 5 years ago, Mave was weeping, "Noooo, Sony, what have you done to RK?! Die evil fillers die!" :waah!: :waah!:

. hack// signWants to be too deep. It's about a computergame ffs. The dialogues get so boring and complicated after a couple episodes you just stop listening/reading. The music which constantly plays doesn't help either. Background music is cool...but it's not an opera.
