Castle in the Sky

Postby FadedOne » Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:58 am

sooo...I was at the video place Thursday and I found this movie. It's hard to find anime stuff b/c everything is alphabetical and I don't know what to look for. Got lucky this time. :jump:

Anyways...I did a search and found the movie is apparently a classic. *grin* I'm glad to find it. but anyways...the label says 'family' but there's no rating...and the video place here is notorious for mislabeling and general evil-movie-ness. Judging from what i've heard it's going to be good and I want my younger bro to watch, but out of curiousity...is there any content to watch out for? I'm betting it's fine, but since I'm the less-cautious one I wanted to check just incase. Usually I'll ignore language and odd-religion, but yeah....just wondering if there's anything that stands out as negative that I want to be aware of.

lol, apologies for the rambling-ness of this entry. was up past 5am.

Hey! I own Castle in the Sky. There was quite a bit of exploding going on, destruction mostly by a robot... And there are some greedy soldiers dumped into the drink.

The part where the castle is under seige and there's a lot of explosions going on is a bit intense, and also at the beginning a ship is invaded (Flying ship).

Theologically speaking the floating Island, Laputa is supposed to be what rained down destruction on Sodom and Gammorah.

Over all it's a good movie, but I think I'd put the Y7 rating on it (Maybe slightly higher). It was enjoyable enough to watch several times, I like Hayao Miyazaki films ^_^ Hoipe you enjoy it! (I also recommend Kikki's Delivery Service, that one I give a G rating)

I think no young eyes should ever be forced to behold the crappy cover art of this movie. You might want to protect them from that (same goes for my neighbor Totoro) ;).

Seriously, I own and have let my entire family see this movie. It's a Miyizaki "children" movie, so all you have to worry about are some explosiong that aren't graphic. Plus, a guy shoots someone's pig tials off, which is just sad. If you're cute enough to have pig tails, no one has the right to shoot them off. So aside from explosions and violence against pigtails, you should definitely watch it! Very family friendly!

BTW, watch the Japanese trailer. The voice for the main male character is so bad that me and my sister still mimic him when we wantt a good laugh. Oh, yeah, there's also a review in our review section if you want a more comprehensive review. (Despite the fact that I think the basics have been throughly covered in this thread already)

EDIT: I was just thinking about it, and I figured I might as well just say that I liked My Neighbor Totoro better than Castle in the Sky. It was just all around cuter and more interesting to me. Plus, no one looses their pig tail. :P Give that one a try. It's a Miyizaki classic.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I have this movie, and think it's really good. (Miyazaki films tend to be pretty good. ^_^) Yeah, I would say it's pretty family friendly. There is some war and destruction, but nothing excessive or graphic. There's a tiny bit of bloodspray when someone's arm gets grazed by a bullet. I don't recall any language or anything. I saw nothing offensive in the movie, though I haven't seen it in a while. If you let him watch Disney movies, you shouldn't have a problem with it. Hope this helps!

My six year old cousin loved it. He also likes going hunting and G.I. Joes, so the small amount of violence didn't seem to bother him.

Did you read the review on here? Anyway, Laputa: Castle in the Sky is a great movie, and I don't think there's any objectional content really.

Oooh! This is a very good movie. ^^ I you like it, I also recommend Kiki's Delivery Service (it's about a witch in training, but it's not that bad... just cutsie and innocent) and Spirited Away (There's some blood in this one as well as alot about spirits and stuff, but again, it's very innocently done).

Hi,
A friend on the board recommended this one, and I really liked it. I even got my sis and mum to watch it, and they liked it too. So I'd say it's a good rental. Kiki's I saw at the rental store too, but I don't hink I can stand watching anything with witches in it even if it seems innocent, but that's me. :) Btw, I saw the guy who did the main bad guys voice, and I had no clue it was Mr. Skywalker as in Mark Hamil, man that guy does great voices overs!
God Bless,
Souba

I also love this movie, but I got the UK version since I live in South Africa and we're the same region. I really love this movie.

I'm not sure about this one. I just don't like the idea of witches being show as good. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously, but then I am careful about what I watch, especially in this sort of field.

Kiki's isn't about magic. The only magic she can muster is flying on a broom. Instead, it's a great coming of age story. I recommend it as well, even though I had a gift copy once returned to me because the main character is a witch. It was deemed inappropriate for my nephews. Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, anything by the mouse is OK, but not if it was made in Japan.

OK, I vented. And I still stand by my recommendation.

You do have a point. Maybe I will look deeper into this one.
