Thats wrong. Gonzo does way better stuff. I am finding out a lot of the anime I like is by Gonzo. Last exile, Chrono Crusade, Gad Guard, Yukikaze, etc. There animation rocks.

No. Gunbuster was simple. Wings of Honneamise was profound but not complex. Nadia was pretty straightforward, His and Her Circumstances was pretty straightforward, Mahoromatic was a typical teenage sex comedy, Oruuchuban Ebichu [stay FAR away from that one] was simplistic (based on an adults only 4-panel comic). Eva we're not supposed to discuss. That's pretty much all I saw of Gainax.

... or did you mean the *titles* of the anime series themselves?

Gainax must have paid them to put their ones in the top. That of course is just wrong. It's terrible how the rich only ever want to get richer. We should spread our wealth if we have it. And you're right. HONZO does do far better animation.

I strongly doubt that Gainax did any such thing. Remember that the western market is a nice bonus, but the prinicpal concern for most anime companies is Japan. I'd call Honneamise, Gunbuster and Nadia classics even if they didn't make the list.

Besides animation runs far behind characters and story where I'm concerned.

I pretty much gave up anime magazines because I find them too shallow. Protoculture Addicts being the only one I don't have a negative opinion of, so I'm not suprised that AI gave the top 50 titles mostly to anime released very recently.

Whoa, first off when I commented on Gainax paying off the Anime Insider I was JOKING. I mean, seriously, I was making light of the whole thing, and said it as a JOKE. :P So please, nobody take what I said as a serious comment against Anime Insider. They are allowed their opinion on their top 50 picks. I prefer my own top 50 list, anyway and wouldn't go by anyone else's list in the first place.

Also, regardless of how much demonization has been made over just another anime classic like Neon Genesis Evangelion - it isn't that bad of a show folks. I've seen much worse. Everyone knows that NGE is going to be up there on the top anime of all time lists. I mean, what show has gained as much attention and controversy surrounding it? Even here, the mere mention of the show brings about such extreme viewpoints - and from people who have never even seen the show. I've seen it, and I can honestly say it deserves the classic foothold it retains - not my fave, but should get a top 10 nod. But, that's IMHO. Now, I will stop talking about it because its a "do not mention" title. *joins Kokoro in getting shot* x_x :P

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

In reply to what a few people here have said about animation, just because all those shows are "Gainax" shows doesn't mean they all had the same animayion studio. NGE's animation studio was Production IG, the company that did the cutscenes for Xenogears, the anime sequence in Kill Bill, and the animation for Love Hina, among other things, and the other Gainax anime may have had other studios. If I had to guess I would think Mahoromatic was an AIC show ^^. And when animation is conscerned, if you ask me, the best animation studio is definitly Madhouse, they kick everyone else's butt :thumb:

This is Newtype Magazine's top 25 anime of all time:

25. Excel Saga
24. Cardcaptor Sakura
23. Wolf's Rain
22. Gundam Seed
21. Full Metal Panic
20. Vision ofEscaflowne
19. Dragon Ball Z
18. Initial D
17. Azumanga Daioh
16. Tenchi Muyo
15. Akira
14. Chobits
13. Fushigi Yugi
12. FLCL
11. Hellsing
10. Sailor Moon
9. Love Hina
8. Ranma 1/2
7. Robotech
6. Fruits Basket
5. Trigun
4. Rurouni Kenshin
3. Inuyasha
2. Cowboy Bebop
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Later on in the magazine the editors complain about how thier favorite anime didn't make top 25. They said that if thy had thier way and it wasn't a 'vote of the fans' thing they would have put in Spirited Away, Ah! My Goddess!, Ghost in Shell, Voltron, and possible Voices of a Distant Star. They also said that if voting had started after Fullmetal Alchemist had come out (which it hadn't) then that should be on the top ofthe list.

Inuyasha as #3??? That's easily Takahashi's LEAST inspired work. Where's Urusei Yatsura? (Suggested advertising slogan: See Rumiko Takahashi before she sold out!). This is as bad as AI's list. I can see only seven titles that should be there. The rest is "flavor of the week" and will be forgotten in a year.

I guess AI just had to hop on the bandwagon and praise Evangelion...sigh.
But I can see why FLCL was put in the top 10...I thought it was a great series! most people are mistaken it's very popular it just because it's insanely random, which people will find either incredibley hilarious or incredibley stupid.....
It actually has A LOT of hidden messages and symbolism within it, and there actually IS a storyline behind it; Gainax just left the viewer to decipher it on his/her own (no really, you need some pro analyzing skills to scratch the surface of it)...and I guess they threw in freakin random poop in it just to keep it either distracting, entertaining, or stupid, depending on your opinion.

That's my personal view, anyway. /end lecture =p

No hard feelings whatsoever. ^____^ I mean, it's just about anime - not like its a life and death struggle. <.< >.> ~_^

I'd like to add that I agree with Newtype's editors, in that, I think eventually everyone will probably see Full Metal Alchemist as the greatest show of all time, the way they view Evangelion. It is a storyline that is so different than any anime I've ever seen. It has a great ending and a completely animated ending, with a story coming full circle and character development coming full circle. The way a good book should be written. Anyways, another bit of my two cents. lol ^^;;

I also can't believe Slayers was not on the list. *heh, runs off to make my own list*

Waht I liked about what the editors said afterwards was how they honored the classics by saying that Voltron should have been on the list. That was my first anime show and I can remember watching it as a kid.

I like New Type's list. A lot of my favorite series are on it, although Evangelion was still first -_-. CCS should be first!!! One thing I don't get, why is Robotech always around?? Wasn't it actully three anime shows spliced together with a lot of story changes? Why can't the original uncut Macross get as much recognition?

Did anyone here ever vist the old bestanime.com website, back when they had their top 100 anime of all time list? I really liked that site.

*putting together her own list of favorites* x_x; Personally...not to burn any FMA fans out there, but I'd CRY if that took the place of Evangelion (if you really want to know why, feel free to PM me or something).

I don't see why Gundam Seed made the list in favor of classics like 08th MS, Char's Counterattack, and the original MS Gundam....and Dragonball Z? x___x; Eeew...

Any top 50 list that doesn't acknowledge "Serial Experiments Lain" isn't worth the iron oxide it's recorded on.

Of course, I don't give much weight to these things... Or, rather, I shouldn't, but I do... Oh well...

I dunno, I think Newtype's is done a bit better, but how in the world that (IMO) junk like DBZ and FCLC got on there is beyond me. And Evangelion at #1? Excuse me while I have an ulser, that's an insult to anime altogether >_>

Oh, it's not like it's BAD. I objected to it being #3 because she's done much better things in the past. I think Urusei Yatsura was her best work, because it was so non-conventional. It seemed like after that series ended her works became kind of formulaic. For horror, I'd recommend her "Mermaid's Saga."
