need short Christmas poem, help?

Postby Jaltus-bot » Sat Dec 11, 2004 5:11 pm

Hi

I'm looking for a short, really good Christmas poem for the poetry website I am working on. Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Prefferably religious. I will consider a nice secular one, just not all santa-y. less than 34 lines would be good, less than 28 lines would be ideal. The only one I have is 45 lines and I want to reduce the length of the poem. The poem may be an original work, or a poem by some old dead guy.

here's one:

Mary and the Innkeeper's Wife
by Marilyn Eynon Scott

As Mary wrapped the Child in swaddling bands
and laid him tenderly upon the straw,
her mind recalled the journey's harsh demands,
how she left behind the pale blue shawl,
the coverlet and matching small white hood,
the woolen gowns and shirts that she had sewed,
the cradle Joseph built of fine grained wood,
too burdensome for travel on the road.

The innkeeper's wife watched Mary and the Child,
her barrenness more poignant in her breast.
But as she hastened to the inn, she smiled,
and in her room she dusted off a chest.
With loving care she lifted out each thing...
her treasured dream, she knew, would befit a King.

One man's prayer is another man's poetry. While not officially a poem, a wonderful prayer by the late Peter Marshall.

"Lord Jesus, who didst take little children into Thine arms and laugh and play with them,
bless, we pray Thee, all children at this Christmastide.

As with shining eyes and glad hearts they nod their heads so wisely at the stories of the angels,
and a baby cradled in the hay at the end of the way of a wandering star, may their faith and expectation be a rebuke to our own faithlessness.
Help us to make this season all joy for them, a time that shall make Thee, Lord Jesus, even more real to them.

Watch tenderly over them and keep them safe.
Grant that they may grow in health and strength into Christian maturity. May they turn early to Thee, the Friend of children, the Friend of all.
We ask in the lovely name of Him who was once a little child. Amen."

-Peter Marshall

Toys, tinsel, candy canes, are all in Christmas, right?
But the real meaning happened on the first Christmas night.
Baby Jesus was born, and that's the story true.
He is the gift from God,
sent for me and you.

Or how about...

The snow is falling gently,
upon the hard-packed ground.
Falling oh so gently,
never making a sound.
As it transforms the world
into a land of white,
everything glimmers
in the soft moonlight.

This one's kind of nice, too.

Christmas Eve

The wind is whistling through stark trees,
the snow is falling gently.

The stars look down in bright array,
patiently awaiting another Christmas day.

In the church bright candles glow,
sending sparkles on the snow.

The moon is glowing steadily,
Christmas Eve is calling me.

I thought this one was good, too.

I’m just a poor shepherd, with no one to care.
I’m just a poor shepherd, with no nice clothes to wear.
I’m just a poor shepherd, with no friends but my sheep.
I’m just a poor shepherd, with no place to sleep.
I’m just a poor shepherd, so why are these angels here?
I’m just a poor shepherd, who would give me ear?
I’m just a poor shepherd, why did they choose me?
I’m just a poor shepherd, but I’ll go and see…

I was just a poor shepherd, but not any more.
I am a free man; life’s no longer a chore.
I have seen the King, what more could I need?
I will follow His bidding, I’ll let Him lead.

The Savior of the world was born tonight,
Go! Spread the good news!
Go share the light!
