Anime my dad might like

Postby TrigunX89 » Thu Dec 09, 2004 1:14 am

Hello, all! I was wondering if you guys had suggestions for me. You see, when I buy anime, my dad usually finds out and wants to watch them. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but... He can be pretty critical. I was wondering if you could give recommendations for something he might like.

This may be some work. To start, I would like very little sexual content. Violence is ok as long as it's not excessive. As for language, less is better, but it is tolerable. Lastly, things heavy in magic or the occult is probably a no-no.

He likes:

Rurouni Kenshin - Good morals, action, and characters.

Trigun - Same as Ruroken.

Inuyasha - Oddly enough. He likes the relationship between Inu and Kagome. He likes the action and characters too.

Cowboy Bebop - Puzzles me...

He doesn't like:

Witch Hunter Robin - Occult, and boring characters.

Wolf's Rain - The theory of man evolving from wolves.

FLCL - He doesn't understand it. And there's the sexual content...

Lupin III - Bad morals.

I like all of the shows he doesn't like, but oh well. He's pretty unpredictable. I also have some DVD's including the full Noir series, which I don't think he liked. Er... Sorry if this is difficult. Don't strain yourself. If anything just pops into your mind, I would appreciate knowing. (I'm using comparisons to shows on Cartoon Network because that's what he usually watches. I'm looking more for DVD's though.) Thanks!

Your dad may like Last Exile. It has some violence, very little language and no sex.

I highly recommend Jubei-chan and Now and Then, Here and There for their high moral content. A bit of a warning for NTHT,
it contains implied rape of one of the characters.
You can check out the reviews for both of these in the reviews section.

Yeah, you might wanna check into Noir too. There's a review it in our review section.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Wolf's Rain - The theory of man evolving from wolves.

I don't see it as a "theory" (it's even more laughable than the monkey thing...and is obviously something that the people who made the show thought would make it more interesting)...if you see the last episode, it's much more like "some people are born from wolves but forget". So it's more like they're wolves who became people and forgot who/what they were.
Darcia claims that he was one of those people, so then he made himself become a wolf
Gundam Wing fits the 'objectionable content' requirements, but it can get slow and confusing sometimes. Not to mention the at times laughable translation.

Gatekeepers and Gatekeepers 21 are both good and don't have any sexual content as far as I can remember. Just remember to watch Gatekeepers before Gatekeepers 21. Ghost in the Shell is also another good one with a great story and action too.^^
happy go luck monkey!

I recommend

Postby hevenz_advokat » Thu Dec 09, 2004 4:20 pm

I suggest Martian Successor Nadesico. I really enjoyed it and it has virtually nothing to offend. THE SERIES!!! Not the movie....it's dumb and for some reason...I don't know if it was the creators or the translators but there is alot of JC's in vain in the movie.....weird as there were NONE in the TV series.

possibly Full Metal Alchemist, becasuse it explains you cannot fix or change your past mistakes, and should take responsibility

the only sexual inuuendo things are just 2 episodes, and they're not bad, no nudity and such

you could take the alchemy thing as "magic" but its more of a science

and ya have to let your Dad atleast watch like, 4 episodes, because at first ed disregards religion, (God in this anime is reffering to "Sun God Leto") but later he learns more and is more mature

That's cool. I appreciate all the recommendations.

I have the complete Noir series on DVD. I thought it was good, but I don't think my dad did.

He isn't big on Fullmetal Alchemist either, for the afformentioned reasons. He's only watched it couple times though, as far as I know. Maybe it'll grow on him.

We used to watch Gundam Wing sometimes. I thought it was a little slow and confusing, but Endless Waltz was great. I might get that movie.

As for all the other suggestions, I'll look into them. I'm leaning towards Last Exile at the moment. Thanks for all the help, everyone!

Is Jubei-chan like... A kiddie anime? Or is it good for anyone?

Check the review. I love it and I'm 21. It's a combination of whackyness and seriousness that only Akitaroh Daichi could pull off (he's my favorite anime director). Both of the animes I recommended are directed by him, but NTHT is definitely not light hearted.

Wow...first post on this site. My dad's into a bunch of anime, but nothing overbearing. Although he strangley likes Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust...but anyway, my dad (although not Christian) is into anything Miyazaki or Gundam, and loves Pokemon for I don't know why. He also likes Escaflowne and Rurouni Kenshin, and would like others similar if he saw them.

I add another tally to the Last Exile votes. Also, grave of the fireflies is a little depressing, but does not contain anything objectionable (It's practically historical).
Cowboy Bebop I can't vote for enough, but there is some violence which is pretty much nullified by Spike's sense of humour and style

Oh and welcome Mizumi-Kun

I second (third, fourth) Last Exile and Now and Then - the implied scene CDL talks about is handled apropriately. Both are good shows.

Jubei-chan is good, too (I loved it - any show with an episode titled "I attached this thing to my head" is OK in my book) - but you will need to gauge your father's tastes in comedy. If you don't think it's funny, then it is very lame. Of course, I don't know how you do that with out watching it.

Galaxy Angel is another one with light to moderate fan service (no nudity) and the violence is more of the ridiculous sort. It's one of the funniest anime out there right now.

Azumanga Daioh is good, clean fun. It's hard to define - the show is just about high school girls going through high school, but it's a lot of fun to watch. No sexuality at all, but there is a perverted teacher - he's pretty harmless, though.

Thanks, guys! He would probably like Naruto, but only if it was dubbed. *sigh*

I think Azumanga Daioh is hilarious, but I think it's probably a bit too much for him. It's still looking like Last Exile is the popular vote. I'll look into the others though.

Thanks for the recommendations! I wouldn't show Akira to my dad due to the violence, or GitS due to the nudity, but the others sound like good options. I was actually looking into the forthcoming Lain boxset... *drool*

Well, seems as if the only thing I can talk about is Giant Robo.
So, watch Giant Robo. Stop what you're doing. Go to eBay and get the Korean boxed set (It contains the English dub).
I'd say it meets your requirments, though the dub added a lot more swearing. I posted a full review with this site's format here.

Also, check out One Piece.
Casshan is pretty neat if you like old school style animes. Check out the new Astroboy anime. It contains a lot of morals and such, with minimal violence. Astro only fights if he has to, and as far as I know, it's pretty clean.

Probably not... But it usually happens anyway. If he sees me get a new anime DVD, he will want to watch it. :dizzy:

Btw, I just found out that I have G4! I watched a couple episodes of Last Exile on it, and I plan to continue watching it. So far so good! It has changed my negativity towards CG in anime.

Thanks again, everyone, for all the recommendations and stuff. I will take them all into consideration. I appreciate it.

Has he seen any Miyazaki movies? He might like Princess Mononoke (though there is stuff like "great spirits", etc.) And Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. I'd suggest Nausicaa because it has good morals and a cool sci-fi fantasy setting. And it's only rated PG!

I think it is kind of amusing how we decide if "this show" is ok for our parents to watch... My mom wanted to read some of my manga and I was having the same issue. (Not that I have iffy manga...) I gave her Azumanga, but I think she lost interest.

Lol that is funny. XD

For Miyazaki movies, I have Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro. I think my dad has seen all of those, except maybe Totoro. I plan on getting Nausicaa when it's released in the US, which should be soon. :D

I've decided, however, that it's not possible for my dad to watch any anime without criticising it in some way or giving me a lecture... *sigh* Ah well... I need to learn not to let it get on my nerves is all.
