wow, this is a great show. It's about this girl who travels to the future to fight in grand space battles. Her ship, coincidentally, is controlled in the same exact way as her favorite arcade game back in the 20th century - down to the 100 yen coin she has to insert before every battle.

So, what's it about? I mean-- the overall story.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Only the first three episodes have been subbed so far, so I don't know too much about the story... but here goes. In the future, a great war is being fought by spaceships from either side in arranged battles. Apparently, 20th century people (that's us!) often have hidden talent for piloting spaceships far beyond anyone from the future's talent. So commander Lawson of the Terra team travels to the past, and recruits Yohko to do battle... She kicks butt. Her rival, Mido Madoka (aka ''Shiny Forehead") is obsessed with discovering the secret of where Yohko disappears to all the time and follows her everywhere. Other characters (who I won't introduce here) are recuited by Lawson and Yohko, and by the end of episode 3, they have a full 4-man team.

According to what I have here, the original appeared in 1995 and was a seven-episode OAV. In 1999, it was reintroduced as a 26-episode TV series. I guess the proper question is whether it's the OAV or the television show.

I'm pretty sure it's the TV series - while the animation is good (I love the FLCL-esque weird camera angles and experimental animation), it's not really OAV quality.

It does say here that the OAV was at one point translated and released in the States, so that should be available in some form (but I suppose if the show you're referring to is fansubbed, it's probably the TV series, I agree).

I have the Starship Girl Yamamoto Yoko DVD. It's got teh OAVs for both seasons on it. The first season's 3, second season's 3 as well. I got it at Best Buy..two summers ago I think. I'll scan the case in a sec.
Note the "15+" on the back. One of the characters (Lote) is...well....let's just say Lote's special.
IIRC there's a bit of nudity in it somewhere...
I felt the OAV was interesting but lacking. And I suppose that's where the TV series comes in.

Heh. The price was one of the main reasons I got it.
There is some mild language, but nothing much harsher than the d word. There are some instances where clevage is shown (minimal and substantial). It's used in either a comedic way or a result of their clothes (permanently stuck in the late 80s early 90s). The nudity is in the 1st and 5th episode. In the first ep, three of the girls are taking showers and talking about who they need for the 4th team member. In the 5th ep they're in a bath and the character Lote (told you she was special..) does a "dead man's float" and rises bum first to the surface. The other girls were talking and panic thinking she's actually drowned. When they turn her over and sit her up she grins and says she's a dead body. She gets smacked and you can see her boob. That's the extent of the nudity.
As for yaoi/yuri, there isn't any. Yoko teases Madoka in the first ep, but it's a joke. Madoka challenges her to a video game and Yoko says that she's noticed her watching her for the past few days. Then says she was worried Madoka was going to confess her undying love.
If you do decide to get this, pay attention to Lote's costume. There are two little teddybear faces on it. ^_^ I didn't notice what was special and really nifty about them until my brother pointed it out.
