Love Hina?

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Sun Sep 05, 2004 1:31 pm

I've always looked at pics of this series and for some reason it looks appealing to me with the character designs and such.

Just wondering if it's an ok series to watch... a lot of the time I see pics and figurines and think "Yup, looks like a complete fan-service show." I know the storyline and such, but is it actually good? Getting past the supposingly "bad parts" (where the manga looks worse and most likely is) :/

From this coming from a person that can watch through Chobits for a story, in your opinion, what did you think of the series?

Well, allow me to first say that many people like the series, fall in love with the characters, find it hilarious and it has won awards.

But personally, I really dislike it. For one, I found it completely unhumorous (bad for a comedy); you have to be a certain type. Also, I know my female acquaintances would raise eyebrows seeing me read page upon page (manga-wise) of bathing/panty/'accident' shots. You could argue that it isn't really fanservice because it's there for a different reason, but I don't buy into it.

The characterization is pretty good, far and away the best aspect of the series. On the other hand, at times it becomes a bit shallow, in that it boils down to nothing more than the elements of a 'romantic comedy' (all of the last volume annoyed me greatly).

Others can probably inform you better.

I saw the first DVD volume and it didn't really impress me. (I was hoping for more of the hilarity found in the Tenchi OVA) I'm considering possibly checking out the rest of the series in the distant future, but not anytime soon.

I think Love Hina is a great series, I even have it on DVD (the series and the 2 movies). It is a bit fan servicey at times but it's all within the storyline. The storyline is great and the characters are very well created and developed throughout the series. I don't see anything bad about the show... I think it's very funny.

For me, the fanservice made the series very difficult to like. I think Naru is a fun character, but on the whole I found I was very ill-at-ease watching it (so I turned it off).

If the character designs are what appeal to you I would suggest watching Mao Chan. One of the main characters looks almost exactly like Naru. In fact Tama chan and Naru both make appearences in Mao Chan. Cute little show the whole family can watch.

Love Hina is an okay show, for the most part. There are a few episodes that I don't like, but other that that, it's all right. It actually has an okay storyline, which is the only reason I watched the whole thing.

For me, though, it is not the sort of thing I would want to watch again, so I'd suggest borrowing it from a friend before laying out any money for it.

I rented the first two DVDs last year and actually liked the show, although I could tell that the fan service was probably going to get pretty bad as the show continued. If nothing else, the RPG episode on disc 2 had me literally rolling with laughter, but otherwise, it wasn't very funny.

Love Hina Again was just a garbage ending to throw two people together who fans wanted to see together. Kind of like a "sequel" to Trigun with no purpose except to bring back Wolfwood. Don't bother with Love Hina Again, it's not worth the time to watch it. The regular series, though, was worth seeing once.

I have read the entire manga series and watched every episode and movie of the anime series.

I enjoyed the series and got a lot of laughs out of it, but it's not one I'm quick to recommend because of the fan service and the humor is kind of odd and a lot of people just don't think it's funny. If you watch the first volume and like it, then you will like the rest of the series as well - that's the best advice I can give.

Love Hina Again makes no sense, IMHO. Don't bother with it unless you have read the manga as well. Basically, it's the last three volumes or so of the 14 volume manga series boiled down into three OVA episodes. It has so many plot holes that it is nearly impossible to follow unless you can fill those gaps by reading the manga.

Gee willakers!!(sp?) maybe I'll run out and buy Love Hina today!!! Or not... I've barely seen anything from it, but it looks like it's nothing but scantily clad females doing... stuff. You could use the argument that you watch it for the story, but are you any better than those who read Playboy for the articles?

I am appalled by fan service. If there is anything in an anime, or any type of film, of which I am wary, it's fan service.
Yeah, I'm that opinionated.

There is fan service in Love Hina, but comparing it to Playboy takes a great stretch of the imagination. Most of the time everyone is fully clothed, with the only exception being the occassional bath when they wear those long towels. I thought the worst fan service was that some of the women were incredibly busty, and Keitaro would fall on them a lot.

Such is true, but only in the anime. The manga bath scenes do not always involve said towels. And though I do believe the comparison to Playboy was excessive, I will admit that there can be (not are) vague similarities in the soft core material.

Yes, I know that they are not of the same magnitude, but the principle behind it is the same.

I have no experience with the manga, and found one viewing of the series enough to satisfy my curiosity.

I would make an exception: there is only one possible reason for reading Playboy]is[/i] possible to watch Love Hina for the sake of the plot or characters. Playboy has neither.

I wasn't too keen on Love Hina mainly due to its' lack of any real humor...and the formula just seemed a little too cliche, nerdy guy living with a lot of girls (Tenchi anyone?). The animation didn't spark anything new, the storyline focused too much on the main character (Sorry forgot his name) getting slapped, pushed and flung around because he "accidently" caught the girls in risque instances.

I do think the characters are designed well and their characterization is on the mark, and I liked Naru. But aside from that, it just followed a little much what other anime did before it.

I don't know, I thought the abuse Keitaro took was hilarious. Just a difference in humor styles.

I personally enjoyed Love Hina and it's on my list of anime that I'd recommend to people. You should watch it, and it's really not much of a fanservice show, or atleast I didn't think it was.

I've seen with my eyes that thew anime is milder than the manga. By far it seems. I enjoyed what I saw, though it was a fan sub.

OH yeah, the music is kinda quirky, compared to what I've heard. It's cool though.

In my opinion the first 16 episodes where great, both funny and a decent story. After that the series seem to be repetitive and have no new plot turns. The characters are okay, you either love them or hate them. I haven't seen Love hina again OVA and debating whether to see it or not. But over all i would rate it about 6/10 (a little above average).
