Mocking Mary Sue Spamfic XD

Postby MillyFan » Sat Aug 30, 2003 3:01 am

So, like, I found this LOTR Mary Sue Generator online. As I have simply HAD it with spamfic posted at fanfiction.net (and I am quite sure there's a Trigun Mary Sue Generator out there somewhere  if you know where, send me an e-mail so I can make it jump through hoops it was never meant to as well *cackles* ~.^ ) I've decided to "have a little fun" with this annoying device made to make spamfic and force it to parody spamfic. . .hope you all enjoy this. I edited a little for space, but you get the point. -^.^-

(This is not my own work aside from the person, place, item, etc. names I popped in. If it was, I would never publish another fanfic online!)

Whiny sighed heavily as she threw her velvet cloak to the floor. Feisty anger flashed in her puce eyes. She flopped over onto her soft sackcloth-sheeted bed and glanced around at the empty room. Tears began to flood her eyes and roll softly down her porcelain cheeks. 'I cannot marry another,' she said in a voice no louder than a whisper. 'I cannot, for my true love is Idiot.'

Standing, Whiny walked solemnly to the window that overlooked the city of Stupefied. The sun was just setting for the night, casting a golden glow over the countryside. But the beauty of the scene touched not Whiny's heart, for it was saddened by the news that had been given to her only hours before. She was to be married to Silly, who was a close personal friend of her father's. She had been given no say in this matter- it was arranged behind her back. And there was no turning away from it now. Tomorrow, she would leave for Spamland to meet her future husband. And the day following, they would be wed.

Whiny clutched at the windowsill until her knuckles turned white, and she wept bitter tears. How could this be happening? Slowly, and with the blur of tears still in her vivid puce eyes, she paced about her bedroom. All she could think of now was Idiot, and how the news would break his heart.

They had met two summers ago in Hacker Haven, when Whiny had gone for a ride in the country with her mother and sisters. But when Whiny had strayed off the path to follow an adorable baby Chihuahua, she had become separated from her family and hopelessly lost. Then out of nowhere a band of orcs had appeared to attack her. By some stroke of luck, she happened to have her father's old socks and speeding ticket hidden secretly within the folds of her skirt. But though she managed to kill 89,000 of the foul creatures, she was soon outnumbered.

Then just as she though her life would be ended, a beautiful dream-like vision appeared before her. The deadly warrior who had come to her rescue, a handsome Baka, quickly killed off the remaining 100,000,000 orcs with his SpamKiller 4.0 before rushing to Whiny's side.

It was love at first sight. The moment she looked into his sparkling burnished spam eyes, Whiny knew there would never be any other for her. 'My name is Idiot,' he said in a voice soft as the summer wind. Tenderly, he put a hand on her eyes to make sure she was alright. 'Are you hurt, my lady?' he asked.

'No,' she replied. In truth there was a bad cut on her nose, but she didn't want to worry Idiot. 'And my name is Whiny.'

'Whiny,' Idiot repeated. He said the name as if savouring the sound of it on his tongue. 'That is a beautiful name, fit for so beautiful a lady.'

In truth, she was beautiful. Unusually so, some said. Her father came from the line of Bakas of Banned Boredom, while her mother was born into a lordly house of Dorobos in Sillyland. The blending of the two races came together perfectly in Whiny, giving her an exotic look that few males found they could resist. Large almond-shaped bright puce eyes were framed perfectly by shimmering waves of thick lemon hair that fell to her waist. A sandbox litter-encrusted mithril pendant hung ever from her slender white neck.

Suddenly, Whiny and Idiot were interrupted by a wild cry that signified more orcs still lurked nearby. 'Come,' said Idiot as he hurried Whiny to her feet. 'It is not safe to linger here. You must come with me, and hurry!' Taking Whiny's hand, he hastened away from the sound. Whiny did her best to keep up with him, but the pain in her nose was too great.

'My lady!' gasped Idiot when he saw her lagging behind. 'You are injured!' Immediately he sat her down to examine the wound. Blood had already started to soak through her gown in an ugly red stain. 'I must tend to this wound now as best I can,' he said. 'We will find a healer later, but for now this cannot wait.' Without a second thought, he pulled off his Hawaiian shirt and began tearing it into bandages for Whiny's nose.

With this makeshift bandage in place, Whiny and Idiot were able to hurry on their way. The cries of orcs were ever-present behind them, but they ran swiftly. Soon, Whiny found herself in front of a small cabin, which she guessed must belong to Idiot. He held the door open as he stepped inside, beckoning for her to follow him. 'Come in,' he said. 'We will be much safer in here.'

Whiny took a deep breath as she stepped toward the cabin door.

There is snickering being done on my part.

Also, it's disturbing in more ways than one, even though I'm no Trigun master and really don't quite know everything that's going on.

I SO detest self-insert Mary Sues. It's creepy, usually stupidly-written (as you can see), and so unoriginal. In fact if I see that a summary begins with "(insert random main character) meets a mysterious new love," I find something else to read, LOL.

Hehe. Don't ask ~.^

By the way, I saw a beginning spamfic today that is in my top ten list of Worst Ever and just may become number one on that list.

It was posted in the Trigun section of fanfiction.net. I will not state the name since that could be seen as recommendation. Basically, it was written by someone named "MIKO gurl" whose real name is Jillian.

Basically it was/is all the worst spamfic has to offer rolled into one. It's a self-insert Mary Sue romance where this magical healing girl "with an IQ of 1999" or something similar, who just *happens* to be named Jillian, runs into a dying Legato on the cliff, heals him, and falls in love. . .BLAHHHHH where is that vomit smiley when I need it?

Not only is it self-insert and Mary Sue, the grammar, spelling, and coherency are HORRIBLE. I mean, I've seen 13 year olds (the author's age) write MUCH better than that.

And for the finishing touch, the author promised a Jillian/Legato lemon in a later chapter. All lemon is bad of course, but the thought of one being written by a 13 year old fangirl who probably paid no more attention in health class than in English just makes me want to scream and pound my PC.

Lastly, the first chapter was just one horribly written paragraph. That's it.

Anyway, this was all the worst spamfic has to offer combined in one. Gaag.

Many times I wonder if some authors lie about their age. Because I have seen truly horrible works from authors who are supposed to be teenagers. My sister has no particular writing talent, but she wrote far better than that a year ago! (and she's just 13 now) At least, I certainly hope there really aren't teenagers like that...

. . .As do I.
Nevertheless, if "MIKO gurl" is really 10 or 11, then there are some really irresponsible parents I'd like to scream at for a while.

I mean, according to her profile she's watching animes that are definitely not for someone so young, and not only that, she is promising to write lemon fanfics. GRR.

Ever read something where you get the strong impression the author is an extremely innocent eight year old? This has happened rarely to me, and it's generally pretty funny. Except where lemons are involved...

Actually, I haven't. Guess I'm lucky LOL.

My preferred fandoms are Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, and the youngest assumed author age (as opposed to posted age) I've seen is around 10 or 11 (which IMHO shouldn't be hanging around either fandom just yet).

Please forgive my naivety, but could someone please explain what a "Mary Sue Generator" is? Even after reading through this thread I still don't understand...

Mary Sue is the term for an inserted character in a story. Specifically, when the author adds his or her self into the story. Generally, this leads to horrible writing. If it's action based, the Mary Sue will be very powerful for no reason. If otherwise, the Mary Sue will be really cool. In any case, the Mary Sue probably will fall in love with the author's favorite character.

Does that clear things up?

I think so... in other words, it's a pre-written story with blanks for inserting only proper names for the characters; as opposed to a "Mad Lib" which has even more blanks for filling in with other kinds of words (verbs, adjectives, etc.)

Am I on target?

No, you described the means used to write some Mary Sues, a "fiction generator."

A Mary Sue can be written originally, however that doesn't make it any better of a read-it just makes it not plagiarized.

Hmm... I inserted myself, sorta, into a story. My fictional self. With fictional details and I'm not powerfull, in fact I think I end up dying... So is that still mary sue?

Yes, I'm afraid it is. That doesn't necessarily mean it's automatically a bad thing, but Mary Sues really aren't the best of writing. We don't hate you for it or anything.

Oh, so those types of writing are called Mary Sues? I always thought they were bad. Some of them were so silly I just burst out laughing even though they weren't supposed to be funny. Are there any good fanfics?

Certainly. You'll often find writing intelligently done that honestly does something new for the series, or is truly worthy in its own right. But it's like the diamond in the rough.

I think the qualifications for a good fanfic are:

1. Understanding the mythos of the story very well (for instance, having Han Solo turn Gay or something probably wouldn't make for good fanfiction)
2. Understand the fans... Though this is less important than
3. Knowing how to tell an interesting story... If you can't write a good story without "help" from a show or whatever that you like, chances are you can't make a good story WITH the help from the show that you like...

Other than that, I see nothing wrong with a self-insert (mary sue.)

I think the general reason it is frowned upon is because it often turns into a self-gratification thing. People daydreaming about something want to be inside, so they put themselves there. Of course, your story might be fine and everything, Mary Sues don't have to cheapen quality.

By the way, the Trigun section over there at fanfiction.net improved for the last couple of days (the better authors like Shandrial, Babboo, and some others all updated on the same day), yet it looks like the spamfics are coming back. . .^sigh^

 I don't know WHY people like to write some of that stuff. I mean, if writing it is half as bad as reading it. . .LOL

Hmm... I am of a somewhat classic belief on writing in that I believe in full sentances, punctuation, identifying who's speaking, and generally avoiding "bullets" and numbering. not to mention writing in complete words, but I'm shocked by how many people write fanfics with numerous shortcuts, and I've even seen fanfics written with bullets, Internet shorthand, and even 1337 5P34K... I honestly can't read them, it hurts my brain... (I hear people saying that about things too complex, I say that about things that people put little effort into)

I think you may see that even in my messageboard posts. I use very few instances of shorthand, IMNSHO being the only one, and the only reason for that is I changed it to become my own thing (It's generally IMHO, meaning "In my humble opinion") I try to capatalize my sentances, and though I may not have the most pristine spelling, I do make an attempt at it. I guess I just never fully integrated into the internet society...

I SO feel your pain. I can't stand fanfic written with shorthand and L337 speak. Any time I see it, I just hit the back button LOL.

As for a bulleted list, in the Trigun section that would be somewhat *original* humor, although if it were done for any kind of serious story (as opposed to humor/parody) I would find it incredibly annoying rather than funny.

I hate to double post, but I want to bring this thread back up with a slight rant.

I think originality has died in this particular section of fanfiction.net. While there are some very good stories, not a one of them has been started by someone joining the site or the fandom within the last week or so.

Instead, this week's newbie writers are to a one posting Mary Sues or W/V yaoi.

I see that as a total lack of originality, since I've actually gone through the entire 63 pages of the database in the Trigun fandom. Mary Sues are sadly the most prevalent and unoriginal content there-I would say I could probably count 300-500 Mary Sues or Mary Sueish fics in that database. W/V yaoi isn't too original either-I could probably list 50-100+ stories that center around W/V yaoi or shounen ai, many more that contain it in some fashion. Sadly enough, this "couple" is becoming almost as popular as Bulma/Vegeta in DBZ fics.

I wonder when someone will actually write something original. We haven't had any really original newbie authors there since Thunk and Chrystalline were newbies to the section almost 3 weeks ago.

Sorry for the rant: I normally post these to the myotaku.com users blog I have, but I just posted it here for some reason. :P

Meh, I understand the feeling. Perhaps I need to get a proper understanding of Trigun and post something there, just so you don't have to keep reading trash. Of course, I'm already working on way too many stories, so that might be a bit much.

A newbie finally posted something somewhat original. It wasn't the best writing (and the person put it in poetry format when it belonged in story format, therefore causing each line to be a separate paragraph) nevertheless it was original and somewhat thought-out.

I'm going to drop that person a good review once the site's back up again. -^.^-

Gah...Mary Sues..I won't even get started on the topic..mostly cause I agree with about every word you've said
"For I am persuaded that neither life, nor death, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor thing present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8: 38-39

Yeah: almost all the Trigun fanfiction sites I've seen were either established so people could post their NC-17 and usually W/V lemons (yech, like that's really quality OR original :rolls_eyes ) or conversely only have a few stories-or don't have the technical ability to multichapter them so you are reading the longest webpage in history.
