Earplugs, anyone?

Postby TheMelodyMaker » Sat Aug 23, 2003 9:20 am

I'm sure there must be an unwritten rule that says every anime series has to have at least one character who makes you want to reach for earplugs. So, on a subject closely related to St. Peter's ugliest character thread, which anime character(s) would you say has/have the most annoying voice(s)?

For me...

From Sailor Moon: a toss-up between Serena and Molly (I wonder if they were both voiced by the same actress...)

From The Bush Baby: either Jackie or Andrew, can't decide...

From Hamtaro: Penelope, for sure.

Well, not to be too typical, but the American dub of Frieza is pretty bad. Or King Cold.

Do you know my top one, though? Zero's voice in the Cataclysm movies on Bob and George. Egad.

English dub:
(YGO)Marik Ishtar: I never want to hear that voice again!! He sounds like an evil 80 year freak instead of a smooth voiced 16 year Egyptian :mutter:

Dutch dub:
A male voice actor (Kero - CCS, Tai - Digimon, Lance - Tonde Buurin).. he acts okay, but his voice is just strange and annoying..¬_¬

The new eigo-Kodachi lacks the punch of Teryl Rothery, though. Rothery's shrill quality was perfect for the character (both Kodachi *and* her voice set your teeth on edge ;) ).

And whenever I drive through the city of Azusa, Calif., on the benighted Interstate 210, I have to resist the urge to scream, "KAWAIIIIIIIIII!!!" out the driver's side window. Anyone who's seen Ranma should understand.

Just about the entire cast of the dub Ronin Warriors. Granted, it's an old series, and granted, it's not that great to begin with, but egads, the VA'ing was horrid! And I'll defend that show beyond most others, let me assure you...
Oh and Quatre's voice in gundam wing. Whiney little blonde baby!

Hmm, for annoying voices I'll have to say Miaka from Fushigi Yugi, Serena from Sailor Moon(although I thought her 2nd voice actor was even more annoying than her first one. ^^;) Marik/Malik from Yugioh(his voice sounded ok in that one ep. where he brought the wounded Bakura to Yugi and co. and told them his name was Namu or something.), Xelloss from Slayers(I got used to his voice after a while, but it's still kinda annoying), The main girl character from Blue Seed(can't remember her name at the moment, but I remember that her screams were pretty loud and annoying)

I actually thought that was an excellent dub. I especially liked the voice for the eyebrow guy. BTW, the characters sounded a certain way for a reason.

IMO, the first dub voices for Zelgadis and Amelia in Slayers were poor. Zelgadis was too unemotional and Amelia was too loud and high pitched. I agree about some of those dub voices for Sailor Moon. Some of those are annoying, especially after watching it in subtitles.

I second that on both counts. *shudder* Kuno, too, just for the ridiculous way he talks (not really his voice). Haposai is just all-around disgusting.

Parn in the Record of the Lodoss War Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. I want to drive his little animated head through a wall every time I hear it. It's not so bad in the OVA, but the TV series .. *shudders.*

Momiji in Blue Seed. Has anyone seen this? Anyways, both voices are extremely high pitched and girly. Also, she screams wayyyyyyyyyy too much! :stressed:

I second the Miaka vote, she has the most annoying voice... but it fits perfectly with the extreme crappiness of the show... (by the way, I actually like Fushigi Yugi. Kind of in a morbid sort of way like I enjoy the original Batman from the 60's) The most annoying voice ever (dubbed) not to mention the most annoying character ever, has got to be Admiral Munetaki from Nadesico, I swear every time he's on the screen I want to shoot him in the head Excel Saga style (ep. 1).

ANY dub from ANY anime.

But when asked for a most hated voice by the original seiyuu... hmmmm Miyu from Daa! Daa! Daa! and Miaka. (another squeal of "Tamahomeeeeeee!" and I'm about ready to press the mute button)

Oh, and how could I forget Chi-Chi's seiyuu in the first DBZ movie (it seems TOEI got fed up and changed her seiyuu later). Gah, that has to be MOST high-pitched screeching I ever heard. And this is coming from someone who likes all the female DBZ characters (After Videl, Chi-Chi is my second fav female char).

Ouch! What about the Viz dubs? In general (certain choices in voice actors aside), they seem to be very well done.

I meant it when I say "ANY" O_o;; I've watched more episodes of Ranma by VIZ then the original subs, but even so, I *still* cringe just because I know it isn't the character's "own" voice. They all just seem to be too high, too low, too "cartoony", too flat, too *WRONG*. (purist side of me talking)

Did I miss mentioning adult Goku's dub? Gah, he sounds so whiny--the original FEMALE seiyuu at least gives Goku the maturity he DOES have.

Well, there are lots of good dubs out there. Companies like Bang Zoom, Animaze, and Industrial Smoke and Mirrors produce fine dubs with great voice talent.

IMO, the Ocean Group (the dubbers of Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2) have mixed quality when it comes to dubs. Some of them are excellent, others are decent, and other are downright bad (like Crest of the Stars).

I liked the Ranma 1/2 OVA dub (for Despertly Seeking Shampoo and Tendo Family Christmas) I have seen, but I haven't seen the subtitles so can can't comment on how good the dub is. However, I will say this in defense of the dub. From what I heard, Shampoo talks in a similar manner in the subtitles as she does in the dub. She has a phony Chinese accent and uses poor grammar. This is why I actually don't mind her dub voice.

As for more horrid dub voices, I didn't care for the dub for the anime in the video game, Megaman 8. Megaman has a high pitched girl voice and Dr. Light talks like Elmer Fudd.

Right. (By the way, the same actress does Azusa, and at least one of Akane's friends.)

Strangely, in the fifth season, the Frog Wizard has the "stereotyped Chinaman" voice in the original Japanese audio, but they cleaned up his grammar for the dub. (Political correctness?) In fact, come to think of it, he sounds almost like the voice of Mr Yotsuya on the Maison Ikkoku dub ... time to look up the cast lists.

Worst Dub Voices

"Serena" Sailormoon DiC dub
"Molly" SM DiC Dub
"Luna" SM DiC dub
"Zoicyte" only because they turned a man into a woman and that's just stupid

I love the voices in the original Japanese cast, though... Luna's not an old woma, Naru isn't from the Bronx, and Usagi's not a friggin valley girl.

Other than SM (still dub only)

They Young admiral from Nadesico
The Turtle from Urusei Yatsura 2
Frieza (DBZ)
One of the Cells (DBZ)

Hmm... The only voices that have gotten on my nerves in Japanese have been

Diana (SM)
Goku (DBZ)

I think I've changed my mind... the so-called "Wiseman" from the R season has an even more annoying voice. And it isn't just how he speaks that I find annoying]what[/I] he says, too. He either lies through his teeth or otherwise says hurtful things; and speaks in a very mocking, snooty tone. (Somehow, I don't think his character is much unlike that of the devil--but I don't want to start any debates over that.) In any case, I'd say he swallowed the ugly stick.
