Yeah, it's as on-command as Inuyasha's Windscar becomes by season 4 (I think we're up to season 4 now on Adult Swim...). Only criterion is that there has to be something there to be reversed back at its user. If that's the case, Inuyasha pretty much activates the Windscar while inside the energy blast (as exemplified in the first ep of season 4, where it's used on demon-lord Ryokotusei's dragon-breath weapon--and apparently Inuyasha is protected from it while inside thanks to Tetsusaiga) and sends it straight back at its user, then calling down tornadoes that cut through anything in their path (in Ryokotusei's case, his draconic body).

I originally had no response (and hence did not respond) but it now occurs to me to clarify that I meant that Inuyasha's Backlash Wave only operates when he activates it himself, and hence wouldn't work if he was surprise-attacked.

But you dont have to be so rough.

I sincerely hope that I did not appear so. Sometimes it merely feels a bit ridiculous when people get up in arms about many issues (not that this thread has been that much of an example of it, especially recently).

I don't know. Inuyasha was unconscious after a fight with Sesshomaru in an earlier episode, and Tetsusaiga started the Windscar attack on Jaken when he ventured too close. It seems likely that Tetsusaiga still protects even while Inuyasha is unaware (even if not using the Backlash Wave), since it is the sister-sword to Tenseiga, which saved Sesshomaru from the Windscar's blast without Sesshomaru's consent or command.

That said, it'd be pretty hard to ambush Inuyasha. He has a dog-demon's hearing and sense of smell, after all.
