I read Harry Potter. I play the cardgame Magic: The Gathering. I like Final Fantasy. I have explanations for each one though.

In Harry Potter, it does get kind of dark, but I know that it's jsut a story and that the book reinforces the characters doing good things, not bad things.

Magic: The Gathering is just a cardgame. Some people think that it's deep into occultic stuff, but I beg to differ. (On a website against M:tG, they claimed that to play a card, you have hold up your hand and say "Spirits enter me." Complete fiction. Like the cardgame itself. ^_^ Where are people making this stuff up from?) You aren't really forced deep into the fantasy setting or anything. It just gives the game depth and flavor. When you play a spell, you don't have to pretend to summon spirits or say an incantation to do it. You just turn a few cards sideways to indicate you're paying for it, then you announce which card you're playing and lay it down on the table. Occultic? I think not. However, some cards are very creepy or occultic in flavor, but they don't encourage it in any way. The type of card that does that the most are black cards, and black always ends up damaging itself in meeting its ends. Black cards often invlolve using your own life points to get effects, but it ends up killing itself in the end. That's why I play Green cards, which are very different in nature and play style from black cards. You play in a completely different way if you sue a different color of cards, so it's not like every single card in the game is occultic or something.

Final Fantasy isn't flooded with Magic or naything. the most you see in it is a character their hands together and mumbling, followed by a fireball or a healing spell or something. Or maybe the summoner makes a creepy critter appear and fry the baddies. Again, it's nothing like real world occult practices.

In the end, if you know that it's fantasy, and you don't let it make you slip closer to the real stuff, there's no problem with it. And remember, if you feel yourself slipping, spend some time praying/reading the Bible and you'll feel as if four inch titanium spikes have grown out of your shoes. Try slipping while wearing those.

You are right in saying that the current version is okay. The first 2 beta versions had cards with names of actual fallen angels. They removed the cards and "voila" just another card game, except it's for those who really want things to be more fantasy related and enthralling. :)

yeah, that works, I guess, but I am getting beffuddled in the head. I need sleep. More on this later. I think.

I agree - I hope this means (most of us) have learned to peacefully co-exist. Thanks for being civil, guys!

I have nothing much to add to this thread...

...but if watching anime with magic in it is going to draw you further away from God, don't watch it. If it's going to affect your walk with the Lord, by all means, avoid it like the Plague. Until you're old enough to make that decision, you're under your parent's law, and the only reason they put restrictions on you is because they care about your spiritual life.

Okay let's get started. First let's get the most obvious remark out of the way.
Sorry, But your father is wrong :( NO! Not because he knows/thinks Magic is wrong and evil, But his Perception (the way he sees) of Magic is Wrong.

The MAGIC in Final Fantasy, or in ANIME isn't Magic from the Devil. The evil forces that are extracted from demons/satanists etc... Isn't the same force that comes out of Lulu's hand in FFX.

In Anime, IN games, and In Movies. This "Magic" is just a shiney glowing ball of fire, or a visual effect. Even if the Magic in Anime was taken seriously it still isn't from the satanic forces we all know and hate. I've yet to see a Satanist make Fire come out of their hand or use Flare, Holy, Blizzaga, Thunder, or Bio on another person.

There-fore the MAGIC in Games is the real Magic. The Eye catching, visual effects Type Magic. Spiritual, natural, or physically Technical Magic that is Pure Fantasy isn't from Satan But from a Fantasy, Un-real Source of Energy That doesn't exhist in the real world.

You can't use or call the Magic/Summons in games/movies/anime in real Life, Because they are fake/fantasy. They don't exhist. The Magic in Media isn't real. Your father is trying to compare two seperate things that have nothing in common. The only similarity that Satanic Force and Fantasy Magic have in common is that they are both rather "powerful" sources from a 3rd party host. In the game world This MAGIC comes out of no-where. In the real world, this magic would come from the demonic powers of the underworld.

MAGIC isn't evil. BUT using the Evil Forces borrowed from Satan is bad. The only reason why the bible condems witchcraft(white&black, good&bad) etc... IS because this power isn't from God but from evil forces. If the magic in games is from a Fantasy "Good/or/nuetral" source then it's okay of course.

DON"T FOrget, fantasy is fantasy. It's not ment to be real. It's ment to use a fake world to deliver a message that would otherwise be difficult to show under normal Real-world curcumstances.

Hollywood, Music, and Square-Enix Keep magic alive. Why? Because it's entertaining and makes good use of an other-wise Dull Battle System. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a bunch of particles coming out of someone's hand. Nothing like the real thing, where you have to sacrafise children, decapitate animals and drain blood mixed with vulgarities in order to obtain a evil solution that can be used to give a fellow peer bad luck.

Volt, simply put: That sums it up completely. :thumb:

There isn't much I can think to add/ask, except that I am confused as to how you account for spells such as Bahamut and/or other rather dark/evil ones.

No one can summon a dragon (or any of the other summons) in the real world, last time I noticed.

As for the "dark" spells, since "light" spells exist as well, it would make sense for its "opposing element" to also exist as spells.
That said, all of the "dark spells" that I have ever seen in RPGs have been pure fantasy as well, as Volt was talking about.

At any rate, I really have nothing else to add, at the moment, to what I said about the subject in my original post way back on the first page.

yeah i definetly agree... i think magic is one of those to each his own things. some people see it as definetly wrong and others dont. ur not gonna go to hell just cause you read or watch something with magic in it, but you are in trouble if you let it seep into your thoughts and life.
