Last Exile Question

Postby Mangafanatic » Wed Jun 23, 2004 8:10 pm

*Pulls out a moderator-proof shield* Hold your fire!! I know there are other Last Exile threads, but I have some very specific questions that I didn't think I could just tack onto the end of another thread. So please, withhold your wrath. ;)
Okee dookey! So here's the set up. . . My mother's not exactly thrilled about me liking anime. She never really has been. I think it's probably because she gets that "Anime in nothing but perverted Asian cartoon porn" story from most places. So I was thinking about buying Last Exile to prove that it's not what everybody says. From what I understand it would be a very good candidate for my "anime is not porn" campaign.
So, can anyone who's seen the whole thing tell/confirm A) If there's any sex or nudity in it B)If there's any GROTESQUE violence in this show. We're big LOTR fans, so you know we can swallow alot of stuff, but if there were some really extruciating and brutal torture sequence or something-- well, I'd like to be forewarned. C) What would you say in the language level in this anime. We have a TVGuardian but I dont' think it works with any anime studio releases.
If you haven't seen't he whole series, feel free to respond as well as you can, but if you've seen it all I more zealously covet your complete opinion. Thanks oooodles for any help anyone can offer.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I've seen 13 of the 26 episodes and there was no nudity or sexual situations. In episode 3, there was a bit of violence, but not anything big. In Takeback, they're at Walker's Dock-a casino, but nothing happens besides a fight breaking out. (SPOILER AHEAD) In the last few episodes, Delphine holds Alex captive in a prison-type thing made of rose vines, but no blood as far as the screencaps showed. Alex also ends up breaking her neck, but again, no blood in the screencaps. (SPOILER END)
And out of the language in it, it's never used excessively. Only one curse word is really used, the 'd' word. I think it's a good choice to show your mother, unless she's bothered by language. You can check out Vanship Soaring for episode summaries and galleries if you want more info. Hey, I adore this series. I have an RPG after it for the sake of Pete! XD

I agree...this would be an excellent series to show your mom. It has very little in the way of offensive material. While I haven't seen the absolute whole thing, I'm almost 100% certain that there's nothing in it that will offend your mom.

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

Oh, I forgot. x_x There are two nude scenes in LE, but neither are sexual nor show anything. One is in Calculate Alex, when the mechanics rip Mullen's musketeer uniform off him in order to complete the Mechanic Induction, and they give him a mechanic uniform. It's brief and nothing shows. The other one is in a later episode, though I'm not sure which. It's Delphine in a bath. Again, nothing shows.

Also, one of the mechanics is gay, but he never does anything more than say so. Last Exile is a pretty clean show and how the dubbing company translated the Japanese slang will determine how much cussing there is. Usually there's less in the subtitles but since I haven't seen the dvds I wouldn't know

So, I mean, how much of anyone do we see. I mean-- when referring to the bath scene. Those don't bother me so long as we don't see "anything". I mean-- Mulan had a bathing scene. So, in the mechanical uniform part, how much of him do we see? I mean, waist up? All of him, but from a distance? Sorry to be so specific, but I like to know what I'm getting into before I sit my mother down and brainwash--er, talk to her.

That's all, on there. The picture of Mullen blushing is all that's seen, other than him screaming, being dragged half naked under a Vanship.

Here's screencaps from the one with Delphine. She flings water every where, but its placed so you don't see anything.

So, is she always flinging water? Or do we see her bust?

She's either fully in the bath or flinging water. I haven't seen the episode, but I don't believe any bust is shown.
