While it helps to have some background (even if it's just general) it's not really nescessary. This movie is a visual treat with a great soundtrack. I would highly recommend it. I believe there is a review of it in the reviews section so I would take a look at that and the other reviews associated with this series. If nothing else it will make you want to delve into the others.

O my gosh yes! I saw this before I saw the OAV and LOVED it! It is very beautiful artwork and nice story and he char are great too! Very nice addition to any anime collection! ^_^
