web-editor@nytimes.com Here is my letter:
I wish you would refrain from stating comments about things you don’t understand. What was printed in your newspaper about Kenshin was very offensive to some of the fans, and to fans to anime and manga in general. This Article:
The open-ended, almost soap-opera-style story tells of Rurouni Kenshin's befriending a young woman and a little boy, and it alternates between humorous, vaguely romantic episodes and improbable sword fights. The hero is honorable, mysterious and, although he looks like a Spice Girl, basically invincible.
Rurouni means ‘wanderer’ and his name is Kenshin Himura, not Rurouni Kenshin. He does NOT look like a Spice girl. He is based off of someone from the Bakamatsu who was a feared assassin and he is meant to look like his counterpart who, in fact, looked more feminine than most men. This is a very misleading article that should have never been printed in the first place. Such a short review of the series cannot possibly encompass all the detail and beauty of the work by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It could be bad for business, also, as fans of Rurouni Kenshin will unsubscribe just for this article. Anime is not cartoons, because cartoons are immature, poorly animated pieces of trash. Anime is much more well drawn, has a deep storyline, and isn’t meant for little kids. You think it is? Watch ‘Ninja Scroll’ or ‘Beserk’. People should not judge things they do not understand. That is what causes so much controversy in our day and age. Please consider my email, and consider other people when you print things. As I’ve said before, DO NOT JUDGE THINGS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! I REPEAT, DO RESEARCH ATLEAST A LITTLE BIT BEFORE PRINTING YOUR ARTICLES. THANK YOU.
Heh...I lost my grip on my anger near the end.
