Reye syndrome is certainly a concern, but it's linked with certain specific viruses. For Kawasaki, aspirin is actually part of the preferred treatment, the primary component being IV immunoglobulin, to reduce the inflammation. However, it seems like that is no longer sufficient.
Steroids are a semi-desperation measure; they're worth trying, but there haven't been encouraging studies on their efficacy.
