What Game Are You Playing Right Now?

So I just played and beat Republic Commando, which was just as good as I remembered. Definitely one of my favorite FPSs.

So I've been trying to play Jedi Knight II, and it's okay, but it's not particularly compelling to me. I don't know why, I like Kyle Katarn and I remember liking the game when I was younger, but it doesn't really make me want to continue. I think I'm going to go play KotOR.

JKII (and Jedi Academy, I guess) has the best lightsaber combat and Force power system I've ever played (of course, I haven't played any Star Wars games since KotOR). But man, the story in both of those games is terribad. I liked Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith a lot more, but the combat and graphics in that game are very obviously waaaaaaaay more rudimentary. And I liked Kyle Katarn much more in the older games. And JKII has really nice box art.

I have started playing through Pikmin 2 again (no, I haven't finished Resident Evil. And lately I haven't really been in the mood :p). This is what happens when my littlest sister plays it in the main room whenever she possibly can and pesters me to play challenge mode with her. I wanted to play the game, but was getting tired of challenge mode. XD

Knowing me, I probably won't finish this play-through, though it is going faster than I thought...

I'm only a couple levels away from the end of Jak 3, yay! I've also put some more time in with my Sims 2 family, who now have the cutest toddler on the face of Simplanet ^_^

I just finished Heavy Rain. This game is terrible. There are an abundance of reasons, but it really boils down to two things:

1) Why is this a video game?
2) For so heavily relying on it's plot, it has way too many holes and inconsistencies that make no sense at all. I really only played this game because I had heard that it was an example of good writing in the world of videogames, and I hope that no one ever does that again.

On the positive side, I used to absolutely hate quick time events, but now I see that they were just being poorly utilized. I would love to see more games have quick time events that change the story upon success or failure rather than the "press X to not die" that has become so typical.

I watched a walkthrough Benzaie did and there were parts where he literally put the controller down and touched nothing, and the game did the QTE for him anyway. Like there was a scene where a truck was about to run over that one character, y'know, Jason's father, and Benzaie pressed nothing and the guy jumped out of the way anyway. Or the part where he was driving a car and didn't press any buttons and the car swerved out of the way of oncoming traffic anyway.

So I disagree with you that QTEs were implemented well in that game. I think they were horribly implemented and while yes, there WERE some that changed the storyline depending on if you did it successfully or not, most of them just existed to make it look like you were interacting with the game in some way when really you weren't.

Those few instances were what I was referring to. I do think that it is lame that some of them have zero effect, but it was still more enjoyable to me than 95% of QTEs in other games.

On the subject of quick-time events, I've always found the ones in the God of War series to be quite well implemented. They're far from being the only thing you do, but they're not at all a rarity and sometimes you can pretty much see them coming. They also allow just enough room for the average player's reaction time. This is a crucial element in QTEs that too many games get wrong.

An example of quick-time events badly done is Clive Barker's Jericho. That could have been a better game than it was. The QTEs in it are so rare that they pretty much blindside you every time, and you have what must be less than a second to react.

Hmm. I haven't played Heavy Rain, nor do I have any desire to, so I guess I can't comment on whether they're enjoyable or not...I'd probably find them not enjoyable, but that's personal preference, so no point in arguing. :3

Still grinding forever in Warriors Orochi 2. I am determined to unlock that last Dream Mode stage. Why they made the requirement so stupidly high I'll never understand. But mostly playing a lot of Strange Journey again recently since I made it through that terrible teleporter maze in Eridanus. So now I'm in Fornax and having a blast, I'm getting pretty good at fusing demons.

Burnout Revenge (PS2).

This game is a beautiful assault on the senses. It's the ultimate racing game for the ADD generation: it's got explosions, fast cars, blurry colors flying around, a punk/emo/techno soundtrack, and everything pulls you in while reducing your attention span, one event at a time. It pushes your "reward get!" and "one more round" buttons like no other game I've ever played, with the gameplay to make it all stick. It's twitch gaming at its best.

Do not play this unless you like the show or like DW type games.
It is not very original gameplay wise.

Finished Jak 3 - yay for those good ol' plot holes

So now I've started playing Super Mario Galaxy 2. I never expect much from Mario stories anyway, but I think this one is a step down from the first Super Mario Galaxy. The gameplay is just as fun, though, with some really nice hats - the cloud one is so dorky and fun! XD It's also super easy, like the first Super Mario Galaxy :/

I'm getting really close to the end of Professor Layton and the Curious Village, too. The puzzles are getting really hard!

Taking a break from some Dynasty Warriors Gundam to pick up Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, which is a LOT of fun.

I haven't decided whether that's because not many people are buying/playing this game, or if I really am just that good. Or both.

Finished Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus from the PS3 Sly Collection. Now on the second stage of Sly 2: Band of Thieves. These games are so freaking ninja.

Got through the first 45 or so puzzles in Professor Layton and the Curious Village while waiting in lines on Black Friday. Stealing my sister's DS like that proved to be one of the smartest things I have done in recent memory (almost made up for being dumb enough to go to Black Friday sales).

This is my first encounter with Layton, and I love it. Hopefully I will get a chance to get back into it again once classes are over.
