I'm tingling all over!!!! I was just scrolling around on Nausicaa.net and I discovered that Buena Vista will be releasing Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, and another version of Totoro (I liked the first one-- but apparently that wasn't sufficient.) AND THEY'RE COMING OUT ON AUGUST, 31 OF THIS YEAR!!! AH!!!! *Passes out from sheer happiness*

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind!!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. I've recently begun reading the manga (but I'm still waiting for the 2nd Volume which is late due to some delay from Viz Comic's side) but I can remember seeing the Anime when I was about seven years old. I can't remember the story, which is maybe just as well, because the version I saw was the "Warriors of the Wind" translation which was minus 17 minutes of footage with the entire story line changed, so it's might as well that I can only remember the breathtaking animation. I'm actually looking forward to the new release; I just wished they could have given it a world-wide theatrical release as well. I'd love to see it in the theatres.
The new version would have the voices of Uma Thurman ("The Bride" from Kill Bill) and Patrick Stewart (Capt Picard from Star Trek) so it's not going to be bottom of the barrel voice actors either. I've never seen Totoro, so I'll catch the new release as well.
On the other hand I've never seen Porco Rosso and apparently a lot of people see it as Miyazaki's only cinematic mistake (ouch!) so I'm not too excited about it so far. Have you seen it?

Well, to be totally honest, I find the idea of a human pig rather off-putting, but if it's good enough I might change my mind. But the people who hate Porco Rosso probably dislike comedies and only like watching one type of genre.

Warriors of the Wind (something to discuss)
And now the front cover of "Warriors of the Wind", the mercilessly edited version of the "Nausicaa" movie. This is so bizarre it should be shown for sheer novelty value as the worse Anime dub in history.
Things to look out for on this cover:
1. Nausicaa (or princess Zandra as she's known in this "evil" version of the anime), the main character, pushed into the background to the right top.
2. Why does the 14-eyed Ohmu (called Gorgons in the movie) have two eyes on the cover? Dunno.
3. Er...who are those other characters? They're not in the moive are they?
4. That tagline has nothing to do with the movie, does it?
Things to look out for on this cover:

To make it worse, while "Nausicaa" the movie was released in Asia, "Warriors of the Wind" was distributed in Australia, Europe, Africa, South America and North America. So practically everybody saw that butchered version. At least, in UK and South Africa, we got a better cover. Doesn't make up for the movie, though.
PS: Look at the cool cover for the Japanese Nausicaa Special Edition!

No!!! Oh, I've read alot of the manga, and I have NO idea who those people in the center of the cover are. I don't remember the prince, who I assume is suppose to be the blonde warrior man, ever totinng a MACHINE GUN which that man is sporting. Also, I don't remember any light saber.
3. I don't recognize any of those other people, but I'm not gonna even try to speculate as to who they're suppose to be. It would be a degridation(sp?) of one of the greatest animes ever.
4. Does the tagline have anything to do with the anime? NO!!!! AHHH!!!! I mean, yeah, what movie doesn't pit their hero and herione against some problem, but really-- that tagline tells you nothing about the movie. It should have been something like "In a world on the edge of decay, can one warrior sway the balance. . " er, somethin' stupid like that.
And I'm totally mad that Nausicaa got booted to the corner of the cover and they put in some blonde tarzan in instead. AHH!!!!

Naussica is definately one of the great classics, and a must see anime. I've never seen Warriors of the Wind, but everyone who has tells me it's crap, so I've never looked for it.

Pardon my grave digging, but I just read an update to this sad story. It isn’t the first time the cursed Nazi Mouse had delayed the release of our beloved princess.
However, there is hope.

Some thoughts on Nausicaa by someone who didn't see it:
A lot of people say that "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" the Anime is the greatest anime movie ever made. That's high praise, assuredly.
I also noticed that these people who hold this oppinion have several things in common: None of them have read the Manga.
A lot of people who have read the manga found the movie wanting and thin. As I understand it, "Nausicaa" the anime was made about ten years before Miyazaki finished the manga, so it is just a distillation of Miyazaki's vision and themes. I also think that people such as we who read the manga should be prepared to be dissapointed in the anime.
Movies based on manga (or books for that matter) are always shortened to fit into the time-frame and budget. Good movies should be like short stories rather than novels.
Just some disorganized thoughts.
A lot of people say that "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" the Anime is the greatest anime movie ever made. That's high praise, assuredly.
I also noticed that these people who hold this oppinion have several things in common: None of them have read the Manga.
A lot of people who have read the manga found the movie wanting and thin. As I understand it, "Nausicaa" the anime was made about ten years before Miyazaki finished the manga, so it is just a distillation of Miyazaki's vision and themes. I also think that people such as we who read the manga should be prepared to be dissapointed in the anime.

I remember finding the movie quite good. Then I read somewhere that the manga has a different ending, so I wanna read it one day to see what happens in there.
Hmmm.... now that I think about it, Nausicaa is almost like an early version of Mononoke....

The manga of Nausicaa and the anime of Mononoke are incredibly similar.

I've seen the movie and watched the film and I'm a big fan of both.
The movie more or less covers the first couple of volumes of the manga and then the manga travels on from there. I think you can enjoy both.
As for Mononoke, I read somewhere that Miyazaki-san wasn't happy with the way Nausicaä turned out because of her messianic-like return to the Valley. He wrote Princess Mononoke to basically tell the same story, only chaging what he didn't like about Nausicaä. That's why they use such similar themes and have a similar feel to them.
