Favorite Watchmen character

Postby rocklobster » Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:33 am

I meant to do this poll, but kept forgetting about it. The Watchmen is one of my all time favorite comic books, and the movie was great, too! So, who are your favorite Watchmen? I vote for Nite Owl and Rorschach.

Rorschach but Nite Owl II is more of a 'good' guy. Sorry, you're not going to get any originality from me.

The red-haired kid who works at the New Frontiersman. The one who has Rorschach's diary at the end.

I liked the Comedian; I enjoy a super hero who really isn't true and valiant; the concept of the anti-hero, or even the Byronic hero, fascinate me.

Seymour's just a character. He's not that important to the story. I was only concentrating on the central characters. You'll notice I omitted Hooded Justice and the original Nite Owl and Silk Spectre, since they're retired.

Yeah, Seymour's only the narrator... the entire reason we have the story. Nobody important there.

Also, why no Bubastis. :| ..Kidding aside about Bubastis... I think my favorite is probably Night Owl II (Dan) and yeah... Seymour. Seymour is the only charachter that actually gets what's happening in full other than Rorsach, and it's strongly implied that he makes the decision to tell everyone what happened with an article in the New Frontiersman.

Look, I was only after the dudes actually in costumes. Seymour only shows up at the end, even in the book. And I thought Rorschach was narrating it.

Seymour is the narrator as he's reading Rorschach's journal in the newsroom and makes his story public. That's my understanding.

Well, that's not what you said, you said "Favorite Watchmen character" and Seymour is a character in Watchmen. No need to be offended just because my favorite character isn't the same as yours.

I wasn't offended, Nate. I was just pointing out something. I didn't think I needed an "other" this time.

Etoh, Fatbatman? Who's that? Do you mean Night Owl II? Because he doesn't look much like Batman in the graphic novel. I guess he kind of does in the movie.

He's Fat-batman. He's like batman, but he's more fatbat. And feathered.

Actually, like all the Watchmen, he's modelled after a character that DC got from Charlton Comics, a company that was around in the 60's. In his case, he's the Blue Beetle.
Here's the models for the others:
Comedian=The Peacemaker
Dr. Manhattan=Captain Atom (actually quite close, in terms of powers anyway)
Ozymandias=Thunderbolt
Rorschach=The Question
Silk Spectre=originally Nightshade, but Moore eventually used some elements of Black Canary and Marvel's Golden Age heroine Phantom Lady.
Gee, I'm such a nerd, aren't I?:hits_self

I guess Rorschach, only by his costume and he has this non-wavering sense of morality.

But really, the question itself is pretty loaded. Watchmen is the deconstruction of the super-hero genre, and to say that I like a certain character doesn't mean he's the most likable guy. I think "interesting" would be a better way to describe it. XD

That's interesting, Ryan, since Rorscach is based on a character called Mr. A who was an endorsement and example of Ayn Rand's objectivism. :p

*nods* That's Steve Ditko for you. He is a staunch objectivist. In fact, it's rumored that his objectivist philosophy led to his leaving Spider-man when Norman Osbourne was revealed as the original Green Goblin.

Which makes Rorschach less credible, I suppose? Ayn Rand's objectivism is a philosophy really disagree with. That's why I said Rorschach is the most interesting because I like how his stance on morality crumbled at the end, and he chooses to die for his stance rather than accept that its flawed (Or that he realized its flawed and decided that it was best to die with it because there was no way he could live with the inconsistency within himself. I suppose that's a better interpretation). But I don't agree with him, lol.

Unless you mean something else. Throw me the bone here. I'm a little lost. lol
