Can this be the general purpose Scott Pilgrim thread? Because I'm in the middle of the third book, and I love the nice little details and in-jokes like going insane inside Honest Ed's (a place of horror) or finding a kid playing Drummania at PMall or the fight at the Toronto Reference Library. Also, the Space Channel 5 fight at the end of the first book.

From the trailers, I get the feeling this movie is going to be so cheesy that it will be great and just plain hilarious.
I'm down with that, but I may just rent it instead of going to see it in theaters. :3

I saw it and it was awesome. My mind was blown in a different way from Inception, but these two plus Toy Story 3 are definitely the best movies I've seen this year.

I was actually surprised at the depth there was to the characters, plot, and relationship dynamics. It wasn't superficial at all.

Certainly a one-of-a-kind movie.

Not really all that hipster, actually. Honestly, it's a pretty tight movie. I'm not terribly bothered by the box office numbers since we're not really gonna get a sequel anyway. They hit the whole series in one go and anything extra would probably taint the awesome. I expect this movie to do really well with a cult following on DVD, though.

By the way? The movie totally holds up to a second viewing. I saw a sneak preview a few weeks ago, and then took my wife again to see it on Sunday. She loved the heck out of it,a nd I really appreciated it as well.

How'd he like it? I'd be interested to know how someone that deeply into the subject (And likely out of the intended audience range) saw it.

He really enjoyed it and encouraged everyone in the class to go see it as well. We didn't really get into a big discussion about it, but he made the statement that this was a movie that people needed to go see and support.

If you want a more detailed analysis/reaction, I could provide you with a review he did for a local newspaper.

I can understand liking it and encouraging people to see it, but "This is a movie people need to go see and support?" I don't understand that. As someone else said, there's pretty much zero possibility of a sequel, so what possible reason is there to support it?

Besides, many box-office bombs go on to be universally loved. Blade Runner and Shawshank Redemption did terrible in theaters, but they're amazingly great movies and most people will admit that. If a movie is good, it will truly stand on its own merits regardless of how profitable it is. So...I'd take that statement as a strike against the movie.

I'm still on the fence as to whether to see this or not. I hear there's a lot of flat acting, and most of the humor is "DERP HERP REMEMBER OLD VIDEO GAMES?" which annoys me because references are not the equivalent of jokes. Still, it's a moot point at the moment as my theater doesn't have it...and since I don't know whether I'll like it or not, driving an hour to the good theater in NC is not an option.

I think the point he was trying to make was that there's more to the movie than what's on the surface; it's a movie people should see because it's good. Basically he was just saying we should support good movies, because there are a lot of cheap, crappy movies that people go to see and in turn overlook some other films. I don't know, I'm probably misquoting him or something.

There are a lot of references throughout the movie, but that isn't the only humor the movie has to offer. It's true, none of the acting is Oscar worthy, but just the same it's nothing that should make anyone cringe.

The movie (And comics) have a videogame referenced story structure, but most of the humor has to do with the conversations between everyone more than specifica references to anything in particular. It's referential in the sense that Easy Rider references biker culture, rather than referential in the sense that Saturday Night Live references politics and popular culture.

Not that it's likely on the level of Easy Rider as a film, but I had a lot of fun watching it, and it was pretty well put together. Wasn't really any flat acting (Unless you count Cera). Also, Kiernan Culkan was awesome.

I saw it. It was really good! I liked it. However, I don't think it was as good as I was expecting. The comics were better. I would still buy it though.

I really liked it and found it completely entertaining. My only problem was that every actor was more or less perfect, except Michael Cera, who seemed to just be playing himself, rather than Scott. He just wasn't Scott for me and that's really my only gripe.

I hope it's still in theaters when I get back to the US... It's not getting an official Korean release. I'm sure the guy on the corner at Nambu Bus terminal has it on DVD, though. Along with Deathly Hallows part 1.
