Tropes You Don't Like

TV, Movies, Sports...you can find it all in here.

Found another one. It's a bit painful because I think most people fall victim to it, but "no true scotsman", at least as far as it involves matters of taste.

No true gamer cares about sports games
No true anime fan watches pokemon
No true Harry Potter book fan likes the movies

There are similar phrases of the political variety, but I'll leave them out...

Jerk Woobie (cleaned up for CAA): A woobie acts like a total jerk, yet you're still supposed to feel sorry for him/her. Unfortunately, most jerk woobies play the role so well, it's usually hard for me to feel sorry for them.

Time Travel - I know some people absolutely love it, but I can't stand time travel. Whether it is a Stable Time Loop or a Temporal Paradox, I simply cannot suspend disbelief whenever this comes up. For me at least, it simply goes against too much logic. Also, science-fiction writers look like they're becoming overly relient on it in their works.

Timey Wimey Ball - See above.

Viewers are Morons - I would love to see this fade away so that smarter shows and movies could rise.

Did not do the Research - I feel this one is self-explanatory.

Meaningless Meaningful Words - Look, we get your trying to make your work seem deep and thought-provoking, but can't you do so in a way that makes sense?

I'll come up with more at a later time.

"Is all this striving after ultimate meaning a massive delusion, a gigantic wish-fulfillment?...Could our symbol-rich world be of interest only to a pitiless nihilist? I do not think so." - Simon Conway Morris

God Mode Sue- Beyond all reason, I loathe this trope. In fact, I shall put all Sue tropes under this category.

Can't Argue With Elves- They're perfect. Always and forever. I get so annoyed with authors who treat them like this!

Offstage Villany- if a character is evil, I want to KNOW it! Show, don't tell. Otherwise, I'm gonna assume that the narrator is probably unreliable and that they're more innocent than I'm being told.

A Wizard Did It- why authors should have multiple good readers check out their work before it's published. I accept that authors aren't perfect, though, as some of my favorite anime also have this problem....

Instant Expert- I can't do it in a day, and I'll bet that neither can they!

New Powers As The Plot Demands- No. If they weren't there to start with, they weren't there to start with.

Mayfly December Romance- YMMV. This one gets me because it can either be squicky or just sad and depressing.

A trope is a writing implement that is commonly used

look up lampshaded on TVTropes.com and it tells you even more, the first page works too.

Hope this helps:)

Author Tract/Filibuster--Actually this varies, depending on the writer. Some writers, like George Orwell and C.S. Lewis, actually work the filibuster in so well that it's not even an issue. I don't mind the author spouting off his/her philosophy, it comes with the territory. But don't bring the story to a complete halt. Work it into the story.

Mary Sue-The only time I don't mind is when it's done well. Also, I hate it when Self-Inserts are Mary Sues because it makes Self-Insert authors that try very, very hard not to make the Self-Insert a Mary Sue (myself included, even though I just barely started and I'm not even in my fic yet) look bad.

American Kirby is Hardcore-I believe stuff shouldn't be changed when imported, but this just crosses the line. I also don't like this Trope when inverted, either.

I'm seriously sick of that one. They usually end up sacraficing themselves in some all-of-a-sudden hopeless situation.

So going on this you dislike the "Americans Hate Tingle" trope?

I don't really hate any tropes because I think they can all be essential if used correctly and directed towards a purpose. (not just there to be there)

That being said, I make one exception:

I agree that this is a trope that we all could do without. XD] American Kirby is Hardcore-I believe stuff shouldn't be changed when imported, but this just crosses the line. I also don't like this Trope when inverted, either.
But what if American Kirby is hardcore? O:
Yeah, I get what you mean. Though, the reason the imagery is changed is in the "hope" that it will appeal to American audiences more. (and of course, as you say, this goes vice versa and I'm now reminded of that article about 9 American beloved characters that Japan has made freaky. XD)

Got a new one: Only in America.

The idea that stupid people, weird people (though this is being quickly replaced with "only in Japan"), violent people, etc. only exist in America.

Keep circulating those tapes: because I hate when I can't find something I want to watch on DVD. This applies to limited releases, as well... Two movies I really want are no longer available. To End All Wars and Beyond Paradise.

OR REALLY FAT PEOPLE. "Oh, hey, that person's really fat. He/she must be AMERICAN!"

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. My least favorite trope of all time: EASY AMNESIA (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EasyAmnesia). I don't mind when the movie/show is actually about Amnesia (The Bourne films being a prime example). But, when a character bonks his head and suddenly forgets select items, such as, oh, the woman he loves or something like that, it makes me angrier than any other trope in the history of modern film. I especially hate it when it is used to increase will they/won't they relational tension.

Here's how I think the writer's train of thought goes: "Hmm... My hero and heroine are pretty much together. I've spent all of the ideas I had to drive the audience crazy with them not getting together. By all rights, the story ended three episodes ago. But I want to get paid for another half-season at least, so... amnesia it is. Besides, my audience is retarded, and I despise them immensely, so even if they do figure out that I'm really just a total worthless hack, I'm really not going to care, because it's not like they have souls or anything. If they've gotten this far into my story, my web of horrific stupidity already has them caught, so whether they hate me or not, I'll still get their money. So they'll have empty brains, AND empty wallets. Man, I may be talentless, but I am a total fox when it comes to money!"

That is my ichiban HATE.

Also, Love Redeems (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoveRedeems) is pretty awful, because that means that in any love triangle where a = girl, b = really sweet guy, and c = total tool, a will play with b's affections for a large part of the show before ultimately ditching him for c. This is too close to real life for comfort, with the main exception being that in the movies, they kiss in the sunset and life happily ever after, while in real life, the police get called for multiple domestic disturbances and the woman ends up fearing for her life and the lives of her children. But you know, whatever, they love each other, right?
