FUNimation relicenses classic Geneon titles!

Postby rocklobster » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:58 pm

I just found out the following classic anime titles have been re-licensed by FUNimation:
Tenchi Muyo (all OVAs)
Tenchi Universe
Tenchi In Tokyo
Haibane Renmei
Serial Experiments Lain
Texhnolyze
original Hellsing
AI Yori Aoshi
Now some of these I already have, like Haibane Renmei and Tenchi Universe. So why am I so happy, you ask? Because now those new to anime can still watch a classic series!

Wow. New dubbing or just relicensing the old VA work?

I hope they are NOT re-dubbing Haibane Renmei. That one is a good dub! :(! I don't mind if they just re-license it, which looks like that's pretty much what they are doing. :D!

Like Fish mentioned, this subject had been addressed in the official NA anime license thread. It may be easier to keep all the info about anime licensing there.

In response to Etoh, I very much doubt Funi will feel the need to redub any of the titles they are picking up (unless the dubs were terrible). I think they may treat them the same way they treated Samurai Champloo (which was keeping the old dub work and releasing it in a shiny new boxset).

Funimation doesn't re-dub their license-rescues, unless it's 4kids terrible or something. So no worries there.
They will also most likely try to get the same voice-actors for the continuations/sequels of Geneon series (Black Lagoon, Shana, etc.) to maintain consistency.
