Monster Hunter Tri

I finally managed to be able to get this game. I was a little reluctant because I didn't care for the first one but Tri is a great improvement and overall extremely fun to play. It really impressed me.

So here is a thread to talk about it in particular even though I know it's a little late.

What are your thoughts, favorite monster, equipments, etc and do you have online play if you have the game? If not, do you plan on buying or checking it out?

I've only started playing since 5 days ago but I'm fairly fond of the great sword and I'm pretty good at gunning. So far I have a blademaster set of complete lvl5 Great Jaggi armor and a Rugged Great Sword. Then a gunner set of another complete lvl3 Great Jaggi armor and a Jaggi Medium Bowgun.

I just finished beating Barroth and I've only started on online play so I'm only HR 6. I gotta say, I do love the challenging aspects of this game.

I hate Qurupeco.

My overall rating is: Awsome!!
Of course, I am a hardcore fan of MH, so I may be baised.
I love the under water feature, it really adds depth to the enviroments! >.<
The monster that has been the most fun to fight so far is the Lagiacrus.
I'm a fan of the Hunters Armor(male) though defense required me to get a set of Ludroth, which gunners cap has an awsome anime hairstyle.
Longsword is definately my favorite weapon. The new side jump feature makes combat really fast-paced.
I do have online, but I'm going to finish village quests first.
My highest char just drove off the Lagiacrus.
I have still to find a super-sized dung. Anyone else know where to get it?
I loathe Quropeco
My one pointed disapointment so far is Cha-Cha. After having Felyne Comrades, Cha-Cha is just annoying, and he is constantly getting in my way. So now he sits at home lol. Having at least the option of a comrade rather than Cha would have been nice. I'm not really far enough to say there isn't, but it's very doubtfull.

I got it from a hunting report reward, I think maybe 338 res points? I killed two Great Jaggis and a whole mess of Jaggi and Jaggia in the same hunt for upgrades. Pellet lvl2 ammo ftw.

ChaCha is okay, I bring him along for hunting the big guys as solo gunning can be a bit difficult. I really only use him as a distraction and never bring him along for trapping quests. xD

My only disappointment is that there is no free travel into the different areas and bosses end up going to Deserted Island in free hunt. It's a little weird to see them out of their "habitats" I suppose but since Quropeco can fly and Royal Ludroth can swim I guess it's okay.

Huh, I've been debating about whether I should pick this up or not...if I do, it probably won't be until later in the summer mostly because...I have a nasty habit of buying to many games and not actually beating them. Anyway, I will be watching this thread, and if/when I do pick this game up, I will be playing online since I've heard its free.

I highly recommend picking it up as its probably one of (if not the) most solid titles for the Wii.

Online play is indeed free and pretty nice. I play off of a wireless router and I don't get any lag at all, I was surprised. There's almost always 1k+ people to play with on the rookie server too. I have no idea on the open servers.. sheesh.

Although it is highly recommended to get to at least lvl 3 quests before even touching online. It's not an easy game to jump into.

Not too many players here, eh?

That's too bad because you're missing out on this literal monstrosity.

Taking this thing on with a GS is very difficult, I had to resort to upgrading my SnS to a Hydra Knife to avoid its multiple poison attacks, light the torches, and to actually hit it. Probably the most disgusting monster I've seen in a while but I honestly love/hate fighting it.

Just make sure your finals are over as it's rather addicting. :>

Let me help ya seal the deal.

Also, fighting Rathian was awesome. I shall make some gunner armor out of her.

I don't like what they did with the los/ians... the whole crouch-stance thing throws me off. But I like the panic sequence where you are pinned down. Though it looks painful. x.x

Yeah this game is great. Requires a fair time commitment though, to get the most out of it.

Currently switch-axing my way through, which is nice change of pace from my longswording/sword & shielding/hunting horning days of MHF2/MHFU.

I'm currently up to Barroth on the offline quests, have touched online only twice or so thus far (made my switch-axe there, cause offline didn't have it available).

I'd love to play it online with you guys some time, though I'm assuming you're both on the American servers which means a no go for me (I think). Ah well.

But yeah, well recommended if you have the time for it. :thumb:

EDIT: For some reason I love fighting Qurupeco. Guess that makes me odd compared to most, lol.

The crouching stances for the wyverns are a bit odd, I agree. Especially when you're trying to cut off their tails. I can't even hit Rathian's tail with a GS.

Speaking of wyverns, I actually kinda feel bad when I'm killing Rathian for the second time. I have a soft spot for dragonic creatures. xD;

Yeah I'm on the American servers. Ah well.

Qurupeco with a switchaxe is practical slaughter as far as I've seen online. I personally just gun the thing to death with normal s lvl2.

Barroth is a real pain for blademasters. My only tip is to hit him in the arms and belly.

I hate double posting but I'd just like to point out that using status attacks are amazing in this game. I felt like a Great Baggi minus the puking up tranquilizer fluid.

Upgraded my SNS Hydra Knife to a Hypnos Knife and got a full set of Great Baggi armor to match today. As the name suggests, it has an attribute of 190 sleep so I can put monsters to sleep rather easily.. similar to what I made these things out of. This was very helpful when Quropeco arrived uninvited during my online Great Jaggi capture because everyone hates that thing.

Also, got a Bishop Talisman that added another +10 to the sleep attribute. I felt extremely lucky with that thing. Now I can't wait 'til I upgrade to Morpheus. 250 sleep attribute will be awesome. I'll be using this new set from now on until I can forge some other planned sets... bwaha.

Added in pics so people will look and see how awesome this game is and play with me online.

I've never played any of the other MH games, but I'm liking this one! First good game on the Wii in ages. D:

So Lancing is pretty darned sweet, guys.

You can actually reach that Rathian's tail or run that Quropeco through.

After killing Great Baggis for another Leader's Crest, a pain in the butt to get, I finally got my hands on an Azure Crest. Pretty sweet weapon but the style of lancing is completely different from most classes with pretty nice positive points.

1. Guarding. No dodge rolling or decent moving speed while equipped. Lancing is mostly defending, the only time you'll be "dodging" is to back up a bit after poking a Barroth in the belly a few times to start repoking. You can move while guarding but make sure you're facing what's about to hit you. I've tested how strong this guard actually is and I took a rage mode Barroth charge head on with no damage taken. I'll test it out on a Rathian's fireball tomorrow. I expect it to work because I guarded a G. Ludroth's water spit attack several times. I may even attempt to take on Lagiacrus with it as well. Guarding is definitely what a lancer should be using a lot.

2. Charge. Got a monster far away? Charge it and run it through but make sure it's not going to hit you mid-charge as it does leave you open for attacks. Charge is also extremely useful online, where I had a lame LSer and a GSer attacking the same monster (R. Ludroth, Barroth, and Quropeco), which could have hit me and end up getting me killed. Instead, I waited for an opening, charged and repeated. Funnily enough, I ended up dealing in way more hits than they did and finishing Ludroth and Quro off myself.

The only negatives I think is the quick loss of sharpness (carrying around whetstones is very necessary) and the vulnerability when attacking groups of monsters like G. Jaggi and G. Baggi, maybe even Gigginox and its anoying Giggis. If you're going to take on G. Baggi with a lance, make sure you're wearing sleep-resistant armor like the G. Baggi set. You're going to be hit by the little Baggi a lot. Personally, I would not even risk it and use another weapon.

Talking about virtual weapons is cool, yo.

Also, everyone online the rookie server has some sort of Ludroth armor piece on. It's driving me insane. Oh, and I finally hit HR 11. Wewt.

Though I haven't played the game much, I have to admit that, from the beginning, I've really liked the Bowgun. I don't know...there's just a level of customization with it that I enjoy. It feels like, as long as I keep the proper distance, I can or will have access to the necessary equipment to kill anything that comes my way.

Yeah, bowgunning is pretty awesome and has an extreme advantage when it comes to monsters like Barroth, you can't hit him in the head with a blade, or Gigginox who spams close-range poison attacks. The only negative is being unable to slice off monster tails and such.

Speaking of Gigginox, I'm working on its armor set due to its poison and lightning resistance and I'd like to have some of its poisonous weapons as well.. but sheesh, it's a real pain sometimes getting the pieces necessary. I think I got really unlucky with a fairly large one that kept spamming roar, poison bodyslam, and it went into rage mode a LOT. I just barely beat it within the time limit and it made me use all my antidotes. I was even using SnS too causing lancing it is really difficult. xwx

At least I destroyed the things heat sensors on its head?, I felt pretty proud of that.

To pretty much sum up Gigginox:

Crim, using slicing shot you can sever monster tails. XD Though I have yet to try it, a guild shoppe lady said so.

I pumped nearly 20 Slice S into Rathian's tail before she died and it didn't work, so it's nearly impossible to sever anything with bowguns. :x

Slice shot is supposed to be like a shotgun shell only with blades rather than shot. Speaking of which I need to shoot some...

So getting a fearsome maw was probably the greatest of my accomplishments so far. Gigginox gunner cap is kickass. I dunno if there's any difference in males or females but it's like awesome Giggi ears. :> I can safely say complete poison resistance makes me laugh at the Gigginox and the Raths.

Also finally took on felling the Lagiacrus. Lancing him was practical slaughter but his underwater attacks still scared me. Lagiacrus is pretty darn epic.

Yeah, male and female armors can differ drastically in MH.
I still gotta beef my equiptment up before Lagi. But I don't think there is any way to get a better LS...

Yeah, I kinda envy the male Gigginox armor, it just looks so much cooler. I was wondering about the caps especially though, there aren't many pics of gunner armor, so I still wonder if guys can get Giggi ears.

Well, to be fair, I took him down first try with only G. Baggi armor and Azure Crest. Also had an auto-guard 10 pawn talisman and put in some sharpening decorations in my armor so I only have to sharpen once and I'm done. He's challenging in the water but on land he's kind of a joke. My only tip is to either guard a lot or move a lot when you're in the water with him. I dunno if LS's can guard though.. if not, don't stay in the same place for more then 5 seconds. His circle-and-charges can be tricky.

Male giggi armor is kinda a goofy cosplay vampire set. Not what I was expecting, since Khezu was one of my very favorite armors and Gigginox is the khezu usurper.

Well, I had timed out last time I fought him, but I didn't know about spirit strike... I might try SnS. I'm still using my Hunter Armor cause I like how it looks the best so far, though I'm kinda liking the barroth stuff... Ugh, so many weapons and armor, and so little time.

Eh, I've seen it in person and it looks like a gothicy rage mode Gigginox armor set to me which looks pretty dang cool and I'm no sparklepire/vampire fangirl either. Gonna have to disagree with you there.

I can't recommend SnS with Lagiacrus but if you're good with it, especially underwater, it could possibly work. Getting in enough hits and dealing enough damage in time will be the issue. Though now that I remember.. my sis did have Barroth SnS and armor and she killed Lagiacrus with it. It was her favorite set until she got Rathalos armor and SnS.

Hmm, It mighta been the goofy red eyebrows on the gunner cap that seemed goofy, and I didn't get to see the chestplate.
Yes, I was thinking the SnS for the underwater bit, since he is cake on land.
