Let's Play Oregon Trail II

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Hoh, we've come quite far without any fatalities, but...surely this cannot last. Make sure you don't let any bears maul you when you go hunting.

In 1848, there's no such thing as underage drinking. Whiskeys all 'round!

Actually, back during the time of Oregon Trail, the government discovered a way to genetically change a person's appearance.
Problem is, they only knew how to make them look one way, so everyone ended up looking the same. So they took the people, loaded them up with their "families" (There is no way of telling people apart, remember?), and shipped them off to Oregon.
Because of this, a while back a game company decided to honor their sacrifices and build the original Oregon Trail game. Unfortunately, because of the sensitive nature of the subject, the government tried to silence the company. So, they compromised and created the game we know today. Over the years the game underwent some changes, but fundamentally remained the same.

I'll make sure to do that. However, I don't know why I'd be the one hunting in the first place; Wasn't it Peanut who wanted to hunt?

You know what time it is kids? It's Let's Play Oregon Trail II time! When we last left our brave and skilled doctor, he was looking for a new rifle in a boring fort in the middle of nowhere. Let's hope we can get this over with quickly.

Image
Why hello lady holding a gun! Watch as I work my mojo to get this NPC chick to hand me her rifle...Hey baby, how's it goin?

Image
(The key to all flirting is to act indifferent...sooo) Maybe. Tell me more.

Image
...I'm sure it is...anyway, Do you have any advice for a handsome, intelligent Doctor like myself?

Image
It's not like the water hasn't been doing that already...heck, it's a better thief then the thieves.

Anyway, this girl doesn't want to give up her gun...guess I just don't have moves anymore. But, maybe her houswife looking friend has one hidden in some closet or something. Is that bonnet store bought, or did you knit it yourself?

Image
Really? Do tell me more?

Image
Yeah...that wouldn't of helped us much with all the knee high water we've almost been drowning in...

Anyway, surprise surprise she doesn't have a rifle either! So, let's check out the Blacksmith...maybe he has one for some random reason...

Image
You know, I probably shouldn't say this but...tell me more.

Image
Sure you charge reasonable rates...though I think they're only reasonable for you...

Image
...ok...what about food? Or how about a rifle so I can shoot more food...

So this guy didn't have one either...sigh.

Next time, we magically get a rifle and run into a real, life leprechaun doctor who wants to steal our brave leader's job. The nerve of the guy!

Spoiler: The hunting is better in the Apple version of Oregon Trail. In OT2, hunting is a Duck Hunt ripoff, without the dog that laughs at you when you miss. Not that missing should be a problem, since you're using the mouse to aim and shoot (except for ducks - those suckers move fast). I'm not sure if you can cause the extinction of the bison like you can in Apple!OT, but it's worth a shot (or fifty) to see if you can. What do you have to lose, except all the meat you can't carry back?

I disagree with your statement for one big reason. In the original OT, you couldn't move to a different location while you were hunting, making it occasionally impossible to shoot anything. In OTII, yes it is a duck hunt rip off, but at least you can actually shoot everything that appears on the screen...also, accuracy in the game isn't based off of whether your a good shot or not. There have been several times in this playthrough when I've had my cursor on something moving very slowly or in a large group and I haven't hit anything. Even if you choose sharpshooter as your job, your still going to miss some game when you shouldn't be missing them. While that may be accurate...its really annoying.

I'm curious . . . what happens when you click "Pardon?" I mean, it's not like the NPCs have to repeat themselves. All you have to do is read the text again.

Also, Bonnet Girl was better looking from a distance.

OT2 had voice acting, so saying "Pardon?" makes them speak the line on the screen over again.

That's what Ante thought too...
I dunno about the duck hunt thing though, I can usually bring down large animals in a few shots. Like, two for a bison for deer, maybe a bear, and one if I'm lucky. Only a few times have I had to use more than that.

Aha! A store that says "Supplies" on it. Clearly our quest for a riffle has come to an end! Also, there is another building on the far left that we can go into. So after shopping, we'll check that out.

Image
YES!!! Rifle acquired. Now to see what that other building has in store...

Image
OH MY GOSH IT'S A GIANT LEPRECHAUN!!!

Image
Wooh! Wooh! Wait one darn pickin second there bub! I'm the only doctor for this wagon train...You set foot near it and I'll test this new rifle out on you first!

Image
That's right...admit it...you suck! I'll probably be taking care of your patients in three minutes if you were to join us.

Image
Why yes! I do happen to have a pretty good supply already. Cause I'm an awesome doctor like that...though I will keep that advice in mind next time I'm in a town.

Now it's time to part from Fort Kearny and...

Image
Find Wild Vegetables! Surely the luck of the Irish is with us!

Image
...hate you Thunderstorms...

Image
Welcome to Plum Creek. Here we will stop for a second so that I can try my new rifle out. This is going to be fun...

Image
YEAH!! I just shot a freaking Bear! Whose the best doctor and Bear hunter on this Wagon train? Peanut is!

No one drowned, got a concussion/small-pox/cold, or lost any food this time. Maybe the luck of the Irish really is with us!:jump:

I usually just shoot one large thing and leave it at that...I don't like to go over the "how much you can carry back" limit.

And of course I don't appreciate his marksmanship. Then again, if he's the "best bear hunter" in the wagon train, I'm scared to know how horribly other hunters miss...

We all know that I'm the only one doing the hunting in this wagon train...it's why I'm the only one who carries back all that meat as well.

...yeah, sure...let's go with that.

Image
Ah progress...you truly are marked by a long red line...

Image
Well, it's more interesting then a bad cold...but it's also worse then a bad cold. Meh, take some laudanum...at least you'll feel...better...perhaps.

Image
So, we haven't looked at our health in awhile, and with Crimmy getting Cholera, I figured now was a good time to check. So yeah, all of you who have been questioning my expertise as a doctor...can't argue with how healthy we are now can you?

Image
...oh, you all know what I'm going to do here. Hunting, it's like a bad addiction for me except less deadly...well for me at least.

Image
Not my best hunt, but still. Lots of fun was had...guess I'll be carrying back that meat by myself...again...thanks guys...

Image
Well if it isn't my old friend Severe Thunderstorm...gosh your worse then ghoul...oh wait, almost none of you get that joke...I blame the thunderstorm...

Image
Welcome to O'Fallon's Bluff which is yet another...

Image
Transition to a new map! We're doing pretty good so far...actually we've been doing really well when you consider our troubles with ankle high water...

Image
...do I really have to comment on this at this point? Guess our luck is beginning to head downward...

Image
And now its heading back upward again!

Ten updates and not a single death.

I feel like I should be saying things that start with "back in my day..."

Good job, though. Keep it up!
