NES Games: Suggest some stuff

Postby Etoh*the*Greato » Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:14 pm

I got a Nintendo. I need to replace the connector on it, but I'm looking to start collecting games. What's some stuff I should pick up? Everyone knows the big stuff, but what are games you'd suggest?

You should totally look for Duck Tales and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and 3. XDD Also, Tecmo Bowl is hilariously fun. Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 are obvious, as is The Legend of Zelda. And check out the Contra games too. XD Man, talk about bringing back memories! XD

Oooh I can certainly help with this!

I won't name the big names, as you're already aware of them. So I'll go with games I've personally played and enjoyed.

Arkista's Ring
Adventures of Lolo
Batman (seriously one of the best NES games ever)
Cobra Triangle
Ducktales (arguably a big-name title, but I feel it should be mentioned anyway)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
StarTropics (also arguably a big-name title)

I hope this helps. :3

EDIT: Ninja'd by Corrie!

Batman
Tiny Toon Adventures (1st one only. second one is fail)
Teenage Mutant NInja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
Final Fantasy
Q-bert (I believe there's a version for the NES)
Tetris (There are three. Stick to the Nintendo version, it's easier to find)
Mike Tyson's Punch Out

If you want an impossible game to play with the zapper get "Gumshoe". It's really fun, but insanely hard. "Zelda II" is also really good, but very under rated in my opinion.

Try out The Guardian Legend. It combines vertical shmup levels (with very little slowdown) with Zelda-type dungeon exploration, where you get weapons and powerups.

Also, Life Force/Salamander. It's a side-game to the Gradius series, with very similar gameplay, alternating between vertical and horizontal levels.

And if you don't like shmups, there's always Mega Man 2.

Amazingly, Life Force is one my room mate has. I've considered popping it in, but I'm not a fan of shmups. I'm fairly obsessed with the Mega Man games, though, so no need to worry about that one.

So, two suggestions for Duck Tails, plus a friend suggesting it to me when we were looking at games resulted me in picking it up. I'm gonna goof with it and I'm gonna keep an eye on the list as I rebuild my collection Today I picked up:
Ducktails
RBI Baseball
Zanac
Excite Bike (haha)
Tail Spin

Shadowgate, because you can't click ye flask.

Oh, and I've heard Zapper games don't work on LCDs... not sure why, since they operate by seeing white flashes on the screen, and that should be the case no matter what they're made of, but there we go.

Two games I suggest that you won't hear very often are Rygar and Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.

Rygar is an experience earning platformer with some top down exploration action. It is a huge classic no one should miss. Experience is, if I remember correctly, invisible, but you get stronger and more life over time (well, as you kill enemies... you can grind by ducking at the edge of a cliff and taping down a turbo attack button) in addition to new items you receive.

Robin Hood has limited continues which are invisible (seems to be a theme here), which can really be annoying when you're right at the end and you hit your last continue (happened to me), but it jumps between several types of gameplay, and has a lot of interesting moments in it. I had a lot of fun with this game just before I got my SNES.

I can confirm that this is 100% correct. The Zapper only works on CRT screens.

It has to do with the refresh rate of the pixels on the screen apparently. LCD screens refresh all pixels on the screen at once, which is why the Zapper's powers are useless against it.

Oh, I totally forgot Super Dodge Ball. That game is all kinds of fun! It's very easy to pick up. I've also heard Double Dribble is an excellent game.

Duck Tales, Little Nemo, Robin Hood, Ninja Turtles... There were a lot of good license games on the NES. Why are they so rare now?

That's an unlicensed game. They don't count. Anywho, I just thought of another good game: A Boy and His Blob. It's weird, but fun! Oh and Lemmings. Gotta have that!

They don't count because...you said so?

It's a cartridge and you can put it in your NES and play it. It exists, it is awesome, and it certainly does count.

And shame on all of you for not mentioning Battletoads.

It doesn't count because Codebreakers never got licensed.
Anyway, how about Maniac Mansion? Now there's a classic. Uninvited is good too.

That still doesn't explain how it doesn't count as a game. It's an UNLICENSED game. That's still a game. You can put it in your NES and play it. It only would not count if it was unplayable for some reason or wasn't a game but a movie or something (for example, those GBA cartridges that were just episodes of Spongebob and Pokemon and stuff).
