Hmmm... This is how I'mma sum my experience up. xD
Anime was filled with: Gore, blood, odd storyline, satanic ritual against little boy, demons, angels portrayed as bad, young boys crossdressing (it's cute, though! D:< ) bad sexual innuendo (and coming close to a scene) in later episode, naked dog-boy. o_o;
MANGA was filled with: Better gore, prettier blood (just follow me here. -.-), better storyline by a LONG SHOT (anime and manga take almost two different storylines after a few episodes), not-as-much sexual innuendo, demons, crossdressing little boy, satanic ritual against little boy, no naked-dog boys. o_o
In this series, there has been often where "God" has come into thought as being not as powerful as we believe Him to be.
Really, I'd say to read the manga and not watch the anime, but it really all depends on your personal tastes. After one certain episode, I really couldn't stand watching the anime anymore--it was really distasteful because of the fact that
Sebastian was having sex with a friggen NUN
, so that turned me off the anime REAL quick.
Anyhow, I really hope this helped somewhat... >_<;;;;;
I recommend this anime if you have a strong stomach and a fervent love for the Victorian Age~ <3
