None of the Disgaea games REQUIRE a lot of grinding. The storylines can be beaten easily in straight shots through with only minimal sidetracking.

Getting everything out of them requires a lot of grinding though. I'm inclined to say that unless you enjoy the process, very little of it is even worth doing anyway. It took me about 190 hours total to complete all of the optional content in Disgaea 3, and that's short compared to the others.

I dunno if I agree with that. The biggest reason I sold my copy of Disgaea without caring is because in the first battle against Kurt, the enemies all went after my Cleric and killed her in two hits basically. My answer to this was "Level up more, of course!"

Unfortunately since you only get experience for killing enemies in Disagaea and not for doing any action (unlike better SRPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics or Arc the Lad), and Clerics were notoriously bad at whacking things, my cleric seemed unable to level up...as for my other characters, not even that one level where every bad guy is standing on a 3x Experience square were able to raise my characters level at a decent pace.

And at that point I hadn't been grinding, which is probably why my cleric was so underlevelled. So yeah, at that point I basically said forget this game, too much grinding...especially when I realized the max level is 9999.

What Nate said...my experience with Disgaea DS is that you can't just run through each level without going to previous stages and/or the item world to level up and get money to buy things.

Admitingly I've made this worse for myself by having an ever growing group of units for me to use and level up, so maybe describing the grinding as insane was a bit to strong...wait...no it isn't...I was comparing Disgaea to other SRPGs when I said this (since comparing it to anything else would be a little unfair), and compared to Disgaea DS, leveling up in them is a cakewalk. Take Fire Emblem for instance, where healing, special abilities (like summoning or dancing), and combat in general give you experience. It just goes faster which means the game takes less time to complete as well. So compared to the Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem's and Arc the Lad's of the world, Disgaea has an insane ammount of level grinding.

Now this doesn't mean the game is bad. I love Disgaea DS, it's one of my favorite games for the DS. However it has it's flaws that will make anyone who has played other SRPGs smash their collective heads against tables...still I would say it's worth all the hours you end up putting into it because the writting is just that good (and funny).

I heard that Disgaea DS had a new character in it that was not in the Playstation version though and that she is horribly broken. I don't care enough to buy it to find out though...plus I am pretty sure the voice acting is probably gone from the DS version yes?

I wouldn't say Disgaea has more level grinding than those games, just that it's longer and more frustrating. For example, I will spend literally four or five hours on the Mandalia Plains in Final Fantasy Tactics, level grinding right after visiting Igros Castle. This is probably the same amount of time I would spend grinding in Disgaea, but with one important difference. In FFT, I can put the enemy to sleep or Stop them, and have my other characters use Accumulate round after round to gain massive experience points.

It's not that Disgaea has "more" grinding, just harder grinding since you don't gain EXP as quickly. In fact FFT probably has more grinding than Disgaea, it's just not as noticeable because it's easier to gain experience, and also, levels don't matter in FFT that much, abilities DO, so most grinding is for JP rather than EXP.

As for Arc the Lad, due to the sheer amount of optional dungeons and the Hunter Guild in the second one, you don't ever really have to do random fights to level, the optional stuff pretty much takes care of it.

Nope, the voice acting is still there (I think...haven't played the original Disgaea so I can't tell if they removed any of it). As for the new character, I think you can only get that character after you beat the game once (though when you consider the fact that you could lose to the boss in the first stage and that counts as beating the game...then yeah she is quite the little game breaker).

I just finished Disgaea 3 - Pretty fun game overall. The prinnies are kinda fun since they are the lower class servants/slaves.

He's rough, but not for the usual reasons.

He's actually in theory the easiest boss in the game, because his pattern is always exactly the same, so once you have it memorized, you can beat him without getting hit very easily, because he never changes his pattern.

However, he sucks because you have to mash the hell out of that button. Seriously you need to pound that sucker like there's no tomorrow to beat him. There's a few videos on youtube to show you how to pull it off. The biggest hint is that unlike every other boss, the ground attack is better to use than the air attack. Only use the air attack when you have to.

Also, take EVERY opportunity to hit him. If you miss once, you're not going to make it.

Your problem is, quite frankly, "you're doing it wrong." Your Cleric should never be whacking things to gain EXP. Your Cleric should gather enough mana (and it takes almost none to make Good-for-Nothing mages) and then use her to create 1 mage of each element type. Then, place a mage next to the cleric on the battlefield. As long as they are adjacent, the cleric will have access to the mage's spells because the Cleric is the character you used to create the mage. Once the Cleric has cast each spell 10 (I think -- been a while since D1) times, the cleric learns the spell permanently. You then focus on raising the Cleric's INT instead of RES and it's not a problem. The damage scale in the game should allow your Cleric to do a lot of healing due to having rising healing tiers, and even the basic spells will do insane damage if you're always taking advantage of the enemy's elemental weaknesses.

Also, in the Disgaea games, when you're in it for the long haul, that 9999 levels is nothing. Especially so in Disgaea 3: I can reincarnate a character and have them go from level 1 to level 9999 in less than 3 minutes. It requires a lot of prep work (took me about 35 hours), but can be duplicated with any character at any time once the prep work is done. Disgaea 1 and 2 have similar abuses. As a side note, however, to max a character's potential, you need to gain 186,000 levels with that character.

Also, as a general rule for Disgaea: Every stat that isn't adding more damage or accuracy isn't worth your time. Fights in the late game are almost universally a one-shot affair -- either you kill them in one shot, or they kill you just as fast. It's impossible to raise DEF and HP enough to stop it, so you might as well take your first-turn advantage to the max. Clerics eventually become useless because of the absence of a resurrection ability.

That-that doesn't sound convenient at all.

I love the style of the Disgaea universe, but since I don't treat gaming as a second job, I think I'll stay out of things.

But again, none of that is required. I did that purely because I wanted to do it. I have a mild obsession with dealing lots of damage. Disgaea 3 has damage records in excess of 3 trillion (according to a report I've heard). I've only achieved 150 billion or so myself.
