I guess it's all in how you look at that particular picture...it could mean anything. It could represent a new child to be brought into the series (lovechild of Renton and Eureka)...or it could represent an awakening of a hereto unrealized power or ability...

Or it could just be an ambiguous art piece that has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie except for the fact that one of the characters looks like Eureka.

Aiyeeeee. <333 I love this series so much. Seems to me like this is going to be a reboot/retelling rather than a sequel, but who can tell... a sequel would be amazing.

I'm glad it's confirmed Renton and Eureka are going to be in it - but Dominic and Anemone had better be in it too, or I'll be mad. xD I love them just as much as I love Renton and Eureka and they needed more screen time in the series =(

Good to finally see some more information on this :), even if it is only one piece of concept art and a release date.

Eureka seveN still rates in my top 5, I must admit.

So there's a Newtype scan going around that gives more details about the story: http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/9818/1231350853262iu8.jpg

And here's an unsourced translation; don't know how accurate it is:

"Renton and Eureka are 5 years old at the start and Dominic is their Tutor. Eureka gets taken away by the military at some point and Renton goes in search for her several years later."

The movie is set in a world where mankind has been at war with the mysterious lifeforms known as Image for over half a century. Renton joined the battleship Gekko-go as a member 8 years ago to search for the kidnapped Eureka. Now, in the battlefield, he will meet her again.

Dominic is supposed to be a teacher to Renton and Eureka when they lived in Warsaw 8 years ago. One day after telling them about the legend surrounding the Snow Moon Flowers, he vanishes. Eureka is described as a young girl whose body reacts strangely to direct sunlight. She's captured by the military and kept as their most guarded secret. To get her back, he entered the military. 8 years later, Renton will enter the battlefield with his favorite mech Nirvash.

The article goes on to specify that the story is brand new, and while the names and circumstances might be the same, the worldview and scenario is completely original. It also mentions that while there will be many new animated scenes in the movie, "by rearranging the scenes from the TV series footage, a brand new story and drama can be shown."

Well, it looks like the movie starts out when they're little kids (5 years old), but will mostly happen when they're older (eight years later, so when they're 13). That said, this is radically different from what I was expecting. That said, E7 ended fairly conclusively and I'm not too eager to see any conflict reopened in that world/timeline with such a solid ending.

Dang...so they wind up younger than when the original series ended. Couldn't they have made them a little older so that way they could still have that relationship they had at the end of the original series?

Ah well...I'll try to reserve judgment...keyword: try.

If I'm understanding this correctly this is more like a retelling rewind. Not only are they retelling the story, but they're going back in the past with their storyline and then fast forward to the present, once again in the new storyline.

I wonder why they just didn't opt for following up with Renton and Eureka where the original left off...after all, they left an open door for anything to happen at the end of the series. One thing you have to say for the Japanese]

See, this is EXACTLY what I was afraid of from the moment they announced the movie. Granted, I'm still open to the possibility of the new story being good in it's own right, but a continuation of the original plot would have been MUCH more desirable.

If by that you mean they have an irrational fear of resolving their stories, then I agree.

I don't see any plausible way for Eureka Seven to be continued from where the anime finished. Whatever conflict there was is resolved. Unless you want the writers to conjure up a contrived new problem for the characters to resolve, there's not much to go on.

I'm reminded of the FMA movie. Now, the ending of the FMA anime is arguably left open in the sense that there was still a major problem. I don't think that at the time the ending aired anyone would believe that it was solvable. Then, we have the movie come out and it turns out it is, but the writers needed to use Nazis to do it.

A non-anime example I can think of is the Star Wars expanded universe. At the end of ROTJ, everything is solved with the death of the Emperor. Logically, though, the Empire doesn't just collapse, so there's some unresolved conflict. However, by the time the EU timeline gets to the New Jedi Order series, the New Republic was stable enough and there wasn't any major unresolved conflict that the authors needed to invent the Yuuzhan Vong. And of course, since then, after the NJO ended, the authors needed to come up with more things to go wrong.

I consider E7 to have a fairly conclusive ending for an anime. So what if Renton and Eureka don't show up again? They've already fulfilled their purpose and everyone else is fine. Inventing a new enemy for the purpose of gathering all the characters we love together again for two hours tends to make for a flimsy premise.

I agree with blkmage. Finding a plausible plot to bring all the previous characters together, even assuming the Gekkostate remained intact, would be challenging. Especially Renton & Eureka and Anemone & Dominic. I'm sure they could have thought of something, but it could seem contrived and "patchy", so a new alternate story might be easier.

I also wanted to see
the baby
and I hope Anemone is in the movie. I also hope relationships like Anemone & Dominic and Talho & Holland is maintained as they were at the end of the series and we won't get the same relationship development a second time around. I wonder if Coralians will play a role at all. But who knows...

I agree that it wouldn't have been EASY to continue the plot past the final episode (right on about the FMA movie), but it would hardly have been impossible. I just worry that trying to put together an entire new plot that covers a LARGER time frame than the series and cram it all into one film's running time offer more ways to screw up than a direct sequel would have.

yah but invent an entire new 'universe' with the same characters but not the same characters?

Well it looks like it could be promising Eureka 7 however it will probably be just a compilation that does a hack job on the plot more than anything else.
