Millennium Actress

Postby Rev. Doc » Fri Mar 26, 2004 8:17 am

I did a search for this title but did not find any references so please forgive me if this has already been covered.

I'd like to make a recommendation to everyone that if you possibly can to give Millennium Actress a watch. I have seen it on the shelves in a number of places but it was not a title that really grabbed me so I just passed it by. The other day I was at Blockbuster Video and they had a copy of the DVD for rent so I decided to give it a go. I'm very happy I did. It's the story of a once legendary actress who is now living in seclusion. As she shares her life story with a reporter, it is played out by the many roles that she had throughout her career. While this can be somewhat confusing at times, as the story progresses it becomes easier to follow and adds to the overall feeling of the movie. The thread that runs through the story is her search for a mysterious man that she met in her childhood and a key that she seeks to return to him. This is a very touching account and I am glad I decided to give it a try. I definately will be adding this one to my anime library. It only comes in subtitled format but is easy to read as you are given ample time with the script. The animation is stunning and the music breathtaking. Millennium Actress is a definate must have especially if you are into historic pieces and love stories.

Working at a video game store, we usually have alot of time to burn. That being said, we popped the aforementioned anime into the Xbox one night. Oh, if only there had been a dub... I generally prefer subs but they're not so fun when your at the register 15 feet away. So we decided to take that out and put in a different movie I will never finish... Hmm, I'm really going to have to check MA out. Thanks for the tip!

BTW, the "different" movie was SIN. Yuck...

I just bought that movie last month, and I love it too. I got my Mom to watch it with me (she usually doesn't watch anime) and loved it!

I loved it, myself. I recommend it highly to pretty much anyone. It's got some thematic elements in it that might freak some people out, but um...... it tied with Spirited Away for Japan's Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival's Grand Prize, so that really ought to tell you something....

Yeah, it was great. The old lady sorta weirded me out thought. . .
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. I've seen it too........unsubtitled......but what I did understand I really really liked. What a great way to deal with a great person's history.

This is definetely one of my favorites. The fact that when I first saw i got a little dust in my eye will not detract from my love of this anime! I've never been a Satoshi Kon fan before but after seeing this I want to see more of his works.

Well, you'll get your chance soon. In the middle of this month (15th if I ain't mistaken) a new KON film called "Tokyo Godfathers" coming to the US. It's rated PG-13. I'm not sure what for.Said something about some sensual content. Bleh. . .

Oh, I was just looking into Tokyo Godfathers, and one of the characters is a transvestite. What a drag.
