Twilight Zone: 1959-2009

Postby rocklobster » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:17 am

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the Twilight Zone. So I was wondering what your favorite Twilight Zone episode was. For me it would be "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." This episode is just so socially relevant because we've seen modern day versions of it too many times (most recently in New Orleans when Katrina hit.).
And who can forget that great opening monologue:
Rod Serling wrote:There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Note: The opening monologue changed every season. I chose the one that defined the show best.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. I appointed you to be a prophet of all nations."
--Jeremiah 1:5

In no particular order:

"The Masks"

"To Serve Man"

"Number 12 Looks Just Like You"

"Where is Everybody?"

"One for the Angels"

There are more, but these are the only titles I can remember off-hand.

*Explosion goes off in the movie*

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.

My favorite has to be the episode "The Obsolete Man" with Burgess Meredith and Fritz Weaver. This episode is almost prophetic in nature because of how society has become. I suggest everyone see this episode (it's available online, as are most of the episodes I believe).
There's alot more that I like, but I can't remember....and there's just too many good episodes, hahaha.
"To be a good listener, you must acquire a musical culture...you must be familiar with the history and development of music, you must listen...to receive music you have to open your ears and wait for the music, you must believe that it is something you need ...to listen is an effort, and just to hear has no merit. A duck hears also." - Igor Stravinsky

Just about most eps are on Hulu's CBS channel and Joost or you can watch it on Sci Fi Channel as well.

"Monsters are Due on Maple Street," "A World of His Own," "I Shot An Arrow Into the Air," "A Penny For Your Thoughts," "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up," "It's a Good Life," "Nothing in the Dark," and "The Masks" are my favorites. I find "The Brain Center at Whipples" prophetic as well.

That would be the ep called Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, with William Shatner in it.

Which was really Nick Cravat in fuzzy suit, which was a very good friend and trapeze partner of Burt Lancaster.

Oh thanks Rocklobster! Im so glad someone finally made a Twilight Zone thread.

And to be correct, it is TW's fifteeth anniversary.

My favorite episodes? Man that's a very hard question.

One for the Angels.
Time Enough At Last. "But it's not fair! It's just not fair!"
The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.
The Man in the Bottle. (And so the corrupted wishes begin!)
The Lateness of the Hour
Night of the Meek (Ah, yes I liked this one alot.)
The Invaders (Alright you got to admit that the ending was a shocker.)
A Penny for Your Thoughts
The Obsolete Man (This is my absolute favorite episode.)
The Shelter (This one is somewhat similar to The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.)
It's a Good Life (Ive seen this one like 5 times. It's an annoying episode, but it's memorable)
Nothing in the Dark (Another very good episode.)
To Serve Man (Woah yeah, another surprising ending!)
The Trade-Ins (This one gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.)
The Changing of the Guard (Again another good episode.)
No Time Like the Past
In Praise of Pip
Nightmare at 20,000 Feet
A Kind of Stopwatch
From Agnes — With Love
The Masks (Yes, another good one.)
I Am the Night — Color Me Black (Goes along with The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street and The Shelter.)
The Jeopardy Room

Well that's about it.

Big time Hollywood actor that started his career in the late 1940's.

Uh, its the 50th anniversary of the Twilight Zone, they made a note of it on Sci Fi Channel's Twilight Zone New Years Eve and New Years Day marathon

Yes, yes they did. I watched so much of them that I just wish I could have seen more.

I would like to know where I could find the complete series DVD difinitive edition that they were advertising. It's not on Bestbuy.com.

Oh good. I thought I was the only one who was actually creeped out by a painted guy in a bear suit.

Actually I'm a downright weirdo. I'm also a sucker for anything even slightly scary. I put myself in the position of the scared person with such detail (The bear suit changed into something much... worse) that I have nightmares for weeks.

"THERE'S A MAN IN A SUIT ON THE WING OF THE PLANE!!!" :)

My personal Twilight Zone faves:

Where Is Everybody? The ending is a bit of a let down, but the rest of the episode is really great at making you go "what the heck?"
And When the Sky Was Opened Not a terribly well known episode, but another one that really leaves you guessing
King Nine Will Not ReturnAnother less remembered one, and another disappointing ending, but creepy as heck
The Invaders Scariest. Action Figures. EVER.
Shadow Play Yet another good episode that many don't seem to remember
The Arrival ...and another one with a really good build-up to a so-so ending
Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up? One of the few episodes I honestly couldn't guess the ending to
Five Characters in Search of an Exit ...though this one threw me for a loop, too
To Serve Man TZ didn't really do all that many pure Sci-Fi stories, but this is easily one of the best
Nightmare at 20,000 Feet Well, I can't leave it out NOW...
The Encounter Some of the best acting in the series, I think
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge Not "really" an episode but a short French film aired as part of the series. Still great.
