Dragon Ball Movie to Film This Year for 2008 Release

TV, Movies, Sports...you can find it all in here.

Well this kind of funny,

ANN wrote:The movie studio 20th Century Fox reportedly notified a fan website that the theatrical trailer for the live-action adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragonball manga will not be released with Max Payne film next week, but later this year. Fox also confirmed that the video that was posted online without authorization last week is not the theatrical trailer, but a promotional video for London's Brand Licensing Europe 2008 and other industry functions "for potential Licensing & Merchandising partners."

I have yet to see a live-action adaptation of an anime series (or an American cartoon {comic book movies don't count} for that matter) that actually worked. I think it's a flawed concept.

Rai, that comic is AMAZING. XDD

And in response to that preview not being the official movie trailer...

I disagree. I watch J-drama all the time, and there are tons that pull it off great, some even better. I could cite tons of examples. One in particular: I would argue that LIAR GAME is far more compelling to watch on the screen than in the manga because the pacing is more dramatic and with the sets, you really can't get a sense of the scale and scope in the manga-- which is really important to understand what the characters are going through <s>and the manga's art totally fails</s>. I don't think there's any reason that anime has to be this closed-off, unadaptable medium-- anime gets adapted from and to books, and it covers a huge range of genres. Girly romantic comedies are as huge in film as they are in anime-- why else are the T- and J-drama adaptions of manga often as-or-more popular than the source material itself?

I will agree that I think this works better for more realistic anime and manga though. There are just some hand-drawn visual effects that do not translate at all.

I kinda wonder what this movie will really be like on the big screen ^^; Anybody have a link to that "not a trailer, but a promo video"

I agree, Speed Racer I thought was fantastic. And I hated the anime show. Visually it was amazing and really felt like a live action anime.

Really bummed Speed Racer did as horrible as it did cause it was sooo much better than the critics (or the trailer) made it out to be. Plus I would have loved to see more cartoons adapted in this way.

I think you've hit the nail on the head, though - I don't read more realistic anime/manga, nor do I read girly romantic comedies, except Ouran, which isn't very girly IMO. So I'm not familiar with series that lend themselves to live-action adaptation. Thus the "I have yet to see" qualifier. I do support things like the Bleach musical, just because it's crazy enough to work.

Rai, that comic reeks of awesomeness.

I still am of the opinion no good can come from this. I can't wait for a talented purveyor of humorous satire to riff it. I'm planning to get together with a friend to do our worst and turn popcorn into a convenient and harmless projectile in the direction of the screen.

You know Mike, Kevin, and Bill are totally going to do a Rifftrax of this movie.

It'll be the only reason that I'm going to buy the DVD.

Oh boy...this movie doesn't look too good me. --'
The Anime (from what I remember) was better than this.
Piccolo looks U G L Y...Ugly and he's not green.
I wonder what they'll look like when they're super-sayin (or what ever it's called)?
The characters really don't look right.
Also Guku needs to be more buff.

Also, since I forgot to respond to it earlier,
20th Century Fox says that the video that was posted online without authorization last week is not the theatrical trailer, but a promotional video

Doesn't change the fact that the footage used in the promo video is the actual footage from the movie; thus, the fact that it's not a trailer doesn't make it any better. Typical stupid PR crap.

You nail it. A few people said the same thing at ANN and here, I will quote it.

ANN member wrote:Fox trying to distance itself from the leaked footage is simply ridiculous. We've seen it, too late, damage's been done. Watch them to reuse most of the same footage in their trailer anyway.

ANN member wrote:This re-writing of history is what you call studio PR. And why would they not leak this sucker out, if they bothered letting some random fan site know of their intentions with the film? All they had to do is issue a cease-and-desist, and be done with it. Oh, they know exactly what they're doing, which is trying to soften the damage, just like with LXG, where they tried to shorten the title.

I;m not so enthusiastic about Dragon Ball like I am with GI joe Rise of Cobra, Terminater Salvation and Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

They messed up the central characters for this film...
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Found a 'trailer'. Like I told my fellows on dA, make sure you're sitting down before watching this:

http://www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/previews/dragonball.html

The trailer's at the bottom of the page.

Thanks darkelfgirl, even though it looks similar to the previous trailer, I think there is new footage in it.
But it doesn't look much like the anime at all IMO.
Especially in the character department.

Although I have never seen/read Dragon Ball, I must say that I'm interested in seeing it.
I would be interested in seeing how they transform a anime into a live-action movie...it seems as if doing that tranformation would make it lose it's "atmosphere", or that it wouldn't be as cool. But with technology these days, I suppose it's possible.

My bad oO. Got excited because me and some friends were searching for one previously, and I stumbled across it yesterday xD. CAA is always one step ahead lol.

Kinda disappointed that Bulma doesn't have her blue hair...and Piccolo looks like a Buffy extra.

Well, let's just hope that it's good, is all. It is, after all, a trailer...

Actually my bad. The trailer we saw before was leaked but new trailer used the footage from that one and some new stuff, so I got mixed up. Oops...

I agree with you about Piccolo, he does look like something thrown in from Buffy. That=Fail in my book.

Man I never liked DBZ and I agree this looks bad. XD But I have to admit I'm anxious to see how "Goku" looks when he goes Super Sayin in this movie, IF he goes Super Sayin in this movie. It'll be hilarious XD

Its Dragon Ball the movie, not Dragon Ball Z

The new trailer looks pretty cool.

I think this will be a pretty entertaining movie just taken on its own merits. It reminds of of "The Forbidden Kingdom". However, judged as a *dragon Ball* movie, it doesn't look like its going to meet expectations.

Check out Speed Racer then. This already fails in where that succeeded from the look of the new trailer IMO. SR actually felt like a live action anime. And I didn't like SR the cartoon but the movie really wasn't bad at all. This still reminds me of Super Smash Brothers the Movie.... the new trailer looks better than the other one but it still looks like garbage. Last one looked like poo... this one looks like poo with a cherry on top. Looks better but still crap...
