Azumanga daioh

Postby wiggins » Sun Jan 11, 2004 1:00 pm

Hi guys,
I heard lots of good reports all over CAA about Azumanga Daioh. I found out it is about 5 highschool girls, just living life, and it is supposed to be hilarious, completely clean, and fun. Is this a shoujo, or can boys enjoy it too? Oh, and I'm not saying shoujo isn't good. I'm just more of a shonen fan.

Okie, the ADV dubbed version is finally starting to appear! I picked up the Newtype preview DVD and it's pretty funny :) (some mild language and some anatomy jokes, but otherwise absolutely wacky).

First disc on pre-order!

Well no typical plot. It has a bit of plot...mostly long running jokes and typical high school life as the girls try to make it through. Chiyo-chan is by far the best though, with runner up Osaka.

And yeah, I may not be a guy, but I liked it quite a bit anyway. I think the humor is easily picked up by just about anyone.

I'm reading the manga and I love it! I am so much looking forward to the anime release. ^__^ It's definitely not romance-y, if that's what you're worried about.

How clean is it? I've just been dying to watch this after seeing several animated signatures on this board (Gypsy's in particular!) I wish someone would review this anime.*sigh* HINT HINT HINT HINT!!!!!!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Obviously, this is based on the ADV dub, and only one episode so far is out (although my first volume is pre-ordered), but I'd 13+ it provisionally. It's mostly clean, but there is some mild language in the dub, and a couple of boob jokes.

That being said, it's so random it's delicious :)

Most definately... I can't wait to see the rest of it.
Oh, and the opening song, if you read the lyrics, is so random that it's hysterical.

I haven't seen the anime series (except the first episode) but I'd agree with shooraijin that it's to be considered 13+. There's no sex scenes or anything of that nature (actually, there's only one major male character, and he's the perverted teacher).

Hmm, how to put this ... most of the breast jokes and other comments sound very much like conversations I've heard/had in locker rooms and such. As a female, I find them funny - but I doubt I would take them the same way an 11 year-old boy would. *scratches head* This is very hard to explain, and I'm sorry if I've just confused anyone. Most of the instances are not topics you're going to hear loudly discussed in mixed company, but since the anime/manga is about a group of girls it's to be expected.

Anyway, the language and anatomy jokes make up a small part of the content. The humor is basically ... well, the Azumanga gifs in Kireihana's and my sig is probably a good example of the nature of the show.

Mangafanatic, my best suggestion to you would be to read some of the manga. Even if you just read a couple pages in the store, you'll get a pretty good idea of the point behind Azumanga Daioh (if there is a point ;)).

Oh, and I think someone needs to ask Ashley how she'd pronounce Azumanga Daioh.

Lol! I pronounced "manga" wrong for ages....

I'm gonna add a bit to what Gypsy said. This anime/manga shows girls how they are when they're by themselves with their friends, and the conversations that go on are your basic "slumber party" sort of conversations. You know, I never really thought what that kind of stuff must sound like to a boy, but it seemed normal to me. Well, Tomo is a little too informal, but that's what makes her hilarious. Just so you know, the jokes aren't flying between guys and girls. It's strictly girl talk.

It's not too different in form and nature (at least) from what guys talk about in locker rooms (ahem), but the subject does seem a bit funny to our ears. :P

Yes, what Kireihana said - my attempt at an explination was floundering a bit. The slumber party scenerio makes it a lot clearer. And yes, Tomo is ... one of a kind. ;)

I'd guess she'd pronounce it somewhat like Osaka... If Ash has an accent  (dunno, never heard her talk...she dosn't type in Texan).

On a similar note I asked someebody if they heard of Azumanga Daioh, and they said gesuntite (gasoonhite? How the monkey do you spell that anyhow?) like I had sneezed...quite entertaining.

Well shucks ya'll knows I cain't pronounce nuthin right...

:shady: Gypsy....that comment was uncalled for you little stinker. Here's the deal guys...even though TECHNICALLY it's pronounced mon-gah, I find that incredibly retarded and about as intelligent sounding as a redneck trying to read a medical book. So I typically say main-gah. Gypsy likes to point and laugh on her superior high horse, but she has a bit of an accent herself. And hey! I like Osaka!

Oh yeah...and about the Texan quip...REMEMBER THE ALAMO!....I mean..uh....ok I'll just let that one go.

Hmm, this hasn't anything to do with accents (and I do not), but hearing "main-gah" just cracks me up.

Okay, people. Let's face it. Mon- gah, just sounds down right dumb, and if you're a self-educated fan, you're bound to mispronounce a few words. It's alright Ashley. In the case of azumanga daioh it doesn't sound stupid, but all by it's self, well--

Well, it's not MONgah, anyway - it's got a softer tone to it - Mahn-gah is more like it.
