Anime isn't cheap in Australia, so if volume by volume can be avoided - great. Boxsets are the way to go but you have to wait ages and some series never get one (or just take their sweet time).

Box sets unless I'm really intent on getting it as fast as possible, in which case I'd probably resort to a cut rate seller such as amazon or best buy or something of the sort, or a digital retailer like iTunes.

Boxsets!!! 8D I'm not one of those anime fans that has to have EVERYTHING about one series... if I can get the series with episodes only, as thinpacks and get it for a cheap price I'm fine with that. XD

I love what Sony did for Blood+ they released the entire first season in a thin pack set before the individual dvds. That was awesome (although I have to wait a long time before I see season 2 XD)

And even then, I've made vow to myself to avoid ADV's thinpacks like the plague! I just don't like the fact that they don't come with extras. Say what you will, but I love the extra attention given to individual volumes.

That being said, I did pick up the "ToHeart" complete collection recently, but those are made by Right Stuff, so you KNOW they're packed with extras! I would buy a Right Stuff complete collection over a ADV Thinpack anyday[/color][/SIZE][/font].

Box sets FTW! they're cheaper 99.9999% of the time, and its always better to get the whole series, or at least a big chunk, at once rather than having to be tortured by waiting months for 3 or 4 more episodes on a single DVD.

These days I rarely ever buy single discs. I'll only consider getting the single discs if there happen to be extras on them that I want (such was the case with the New Fist of the North Star OVA), otherwise I prefer box sets, even if it means waiting a long time for them.

I rarely if EVER buy anime but if I do, I want it to be a boxset so I can watch the whole thing on my own timetable, thank you. And if I care enough to buy it, I'm going to get it as cheap as possible, so thinpacks when I can.

Boxed sets if I can wait for them. XD They're so much cheaper in the long run, and thinpaks are amazing. XD There are some series where I buy the individuals just for a few favorite episodes, but I like boxed sets so much more. XD

I prefer individual volumes with the art box. Normally, price isn't a big deal for me, because I buy a majority of my anime on Ebay, so I get it for cheaper than a box set would cost brand new. (Noir, $25, Witch Hunter Robin, 30$, etc) That being said, when the single volumes are too expensive to get, I'm willing to get a box set. An example would be Ergo Proxy. I don't want to spend $100 for all 7 dvds with the box, as awesome as it looks. $44 for a box set from deep discount is worth the sacrifice.

I love box sets. Of just about anything, unless it's like a manga or book series that's not finished yet or something. I don't really care much for anime extras, OVAs discounted - I mean, I hardly have time lately to sit down and watch the anime itself, let alone extras ^^;

That said, I agree with Ashley - I hardly ever actually buy anime and borrow whenever possible.

Though I broke my own rule with Mushishi >___> I fell in love with that series... couldn't wait for the box set to be released, so now I'm collecting volume-by-volume. So sue me. At least I found the individual DVDs for really great prices.

Box sets... I NEVER get individual volumes. Waste of money IMO. And I only get boxsets when they're on sale ^_^ Amazon merchants selling 80 dollar boxsets for 40-50 bucks FTW.

And I don't bother checking out anime that have like 8 seasons (InuYasha). They just drag.

With Hellsing OVAs, I am loving the metal DVD cases the LE versons come with. So unless they make some amazing boxset...I will stick with my singles.

Boxsets usually are the MUCH cheaper way to go, so if it is available I'll buy it.

I think I'll wait for the box set(What is all of this saying? That Im not

But if the series is new and I really want to see it then I will collect volume by volume. And also there is something special about collecting volume by volume.

This one below is just Session 6, notice the price. Im not doubting that you can get it for less online, Im just saying at a regular retail store who don't usually have discounts the price will be around $20 for one volume.

What purpose does the box serve? I mean, for the few sets I've gotten, I've always chucked the box somewhere out of the way and stuffed the DVD's on my bookshelf. It's just going to pick up dust, anyway...

Definitely box sets. I try and buy whole series at a time. So It's really not worth all the extra money going with the individual DVD's unless you can get them REALLY cheap.

Boxsets... I hate not knowing what's gonna happen next...I remember buying VHS 1 of Nadesico, I didn't even know if (spoiler) died or not... Thought he may come back in the next episode, especially since the last line of the episode seemed so comical and it didn't seem like the show had a real serious streak to it.

Owning a couple myself, I can tell ya that the ADV thinpacks (the ones I own at least) are ver batim copies of the DVDs as they were. ADV likes to put little work in to stuff, so it makes sense that they'd not put the extra work in to actually stripping the specials from the DVDs.

That said, I prefer boxed sets.

As I've said elsewhere, the only anime I'm bothering to buy right now is FMA. I've bought both single volumes and a box set, and overall...I think I like the single volumes. For FMA, at least, the box set is just the same as getting three single volumes at once - they just stick three DVDs and the corresponding booklets into a box. And if that's the same, I'd rather get the single volumes so I can also have the cover art. Also, the way they put the three DVDs together is that they have two of them overlapping, which makes it slightly harder to get the DVDs out and increases the risk of scratching them.

So, I prefer single volumes, but I'm not too fussed about which I get, really.

Nope, nothing about a regular store.

But even in a regular store, sometimes it is cheaper to buy individually and sometimes it is cheaper to buy the boxset. Depends on the series and the individual store.

Most anime boxets at Hasting's: $50-$70 (which is still not bad at all)

I bought my Cowboy Bebop DVDs both new and used. (I think one was new and the rest were used but in excellent condition)
