College Football 2008

Postby Peanut » Sun Aug 17, 2008 6:32 pm

Yep, it's that time of year again. College Football starts this weekend and I am rather excited. As usual I've set up a pick'em group, all you need to play is a yahoo ID and the following information:

Group Name: CAA Pick'em
Password: blah
Group Number: 14684
http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/college

The following thread is mostly for talking about the upcoming season...hopefully this year my internet won't randomly ban me from CAA.

I wasn't sure about the interest level, but I'm more than happy to set up the leagues.

Hope I see you all in all three leagues this year.

So yeah...I made a slight mistake...it wasn't last weekend but this weekend (more specifically tomorrow) when it begins...oops. Well allow me to take this time to remind you that you have until saturday to make your picks or join in and to take this time to try and stimulate some discusion:

-I'm no longer a Rich Rodriguez fan for rather obvious reasons however I can admit that he will be immensely successful at Michigan...just not this year. The jury is still out on Bill Steward, on one hand the coaching staff around him is amazing (4 coaches have coordinator experience and 1, Doc Holliday, was a leading candidate to take over after Rodriguez before the Fiesta bowl and is a very good recruiter) and the class he's bringing in for next year is looking like possibly the best in school history. However when you go 8-25 as a head coach anywhere (even VMI) I think we still reserve the right to be suspicious. Plus I'm not too sure if our victory over Oklahoma was more because of Steward or Calvin Magee (our former OC who moved with Rodriguez to Michigan) so I guess we will just have to wait until at least the Colorado game if not the Auburn game.

-The NCAA has failed twice (in my opinion) this offseason...
And I'm not referring to the BCS's decision to not implement a Plus One system, but to the continuing drama that's going on with Ben Mauk. First they rejected his request for another year of eligibility, then they rejected his appeal only to say that they were still considering it as soon as he threatened to sue. Honestly I don't know why the NCAA is doing this, Mauk has no future playing football in the NFL for a multitude of reasons so there would be no harm done in allowing him to have one more year (as terrifying as that would honestly be for me...yes...Mauk scares me...).

-Is anyone else tired of the media fest surronding Tim Tebow? I mean he's a great player but do we really need to devote an article to him performing minor surgery during a missions trip in the offseason? Could this possibly lead to a wave of Tim Tebow jokes along the same vein of the Chuck Noris jokes of a few years ago? The world may never know...

I quit watching ESPN because of their coverage of any sport. They drone on and on about a particular player or team and then they will make some weird comment about how no one talks about anything else.

I'm not sure if they are the ones droning on about Tebow or not (since I don't watch it anymore) but the sports media in general all seem to be of the same gene pool.

I know what you are saying about Rodriguez. Whatever happened to the simple "no comment" instead of boldly lying to everyone around you?

Football! Football! Football!

I've already been planning my face paint for the home games. YEAH BABY!

The good news is were in a top conference like the SEC. The bad news is were in a top conference like the SEC. I'm hoping Clemson beats the ever livin' crap out of Alabama.

My college totally owned the other team last night. About 58-6. The other team was really bad. XD I hope we win the conference again.
I also hope some team totally creams A&M and UT --nothing against those schools (I have friends that attend both), but I'm tired of the hype (they're the two HUGE schools in Texas--it's almost like the other universities don't matter...XD). I want to see them get beaten horribly at least once...

It's the first weekend and already we have an upset (on paper at least), East Carolina over Virginia Tech...also, Pitt is losing to Bowling Green which makes me very happy...win the Big East...pft...right...

Edit: And this is why I love the south...I just found WVU vs. Villanova...a game which was supposed to appear on a chanel I don't get...*rejoices*\

Edit Edit: BGSU Pit just went final...and it appears as if Pitt's time in the top 25 was short lived...hehe...

Edit Edit Edit: So, it's the fourth quarter of the WVU/Villanova game...and I have to say that Pat White looks like a legitimit quarterback...and that's not just because they're playing a FCS team. If it wasn't for a couple dropped balls, he'd be closer to perfect right now. With that being said...our defense does not look good right now...

Edit Edit Edit Edit: Well, with the way the Alabama/Clemson game seems to be going...I think it's safe to say that the ACC as a conference is going to have a long tough year ahead of them...

Well, the one upset that I picked was right, with Alabama beating Clemson. Unfortunately, I didn't for see East Carolina beating VTech and Bowling Green beating Pit.

No upsets like last years App. State beating Michigan though, which kinda stinks. I always like unexpected upsets like that.

Wow to Alabama. That Terrence Cody is a scary guy.

And we beat our rival! Again! HA! It's good to see our defense on the ball like that (no pun intended). Pryor had a game and a half, too. I think our offense will pull it together with time; they just need the experience.

I would hate to be Hunter Cantwell right now.

Also, this little gem from SI.com.

However, the biggest blunder in ACC country Saturday took place in the sky. A pair of parachuters who were slated to deliver the game ball for North Carolina's opener against McNeese State inadvertently landed eight miles away -- at Duke's stadium. "In about five years," said concerned UNC associate AD Rick Steinbacher, "maybe this will be funny."

Oh no -- it's plenty funny right now.

Yay for not only college football is back, but high school football as well.

High school and college football is one of many reasons why I love the fall.

For the past 11 years, me and my dad go to a high school football game around the state of Georgia just about every week.

First, I have to say that the upset of East Carolina over Virginia Tech wasn't that big of a shock. Virginia Tech just about lost all of their starting WR's and their good tailback was kick off the team and they have 72 underclassmen on the team. To me, Virginia Tech like Pitt and Clemson are a bit over hype this year.

I think the ACC wish they had a reset button for this year. The way things are going in the ACC, just about anyone could win the conference this year, even Georgia Tech has some hope of being pretty good this year.

Kentucky's defense look really good, but the offense does need work, but they are breaking in a new QB and WR group. The good news is, they have time to work on it, since the next three games are Norfolk State, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. They should have it together by then, but then they will have to play Alabama at Bama after that.

Now about my Vols. What can I say about them. I have to deal with both the good times and the bad times, but this is getting old. I know its just one game, but we look bad and we have to fit it in a hurry. The bad thing is, this nothing new for Fulmer, he just gets out coach a lot. A lot of Vols see this, that he can bring the players in, but when it comes to coaching them, he or his staff can't do anything with them. Its sad to see this, because with the recruiting classes that we have had over the years, we should be in BCS bowl games and be up there in the top with the rest of the SEC class. But we giving Fulmer and his staff too many chances and I guess the AD at Tennessee is okay with us being a middle class SEC team and not be anywhere near as good as Fla or Ga.

I'm starting to not to have much faith in our new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson. I know its first game and all, but he needs to learn quickly. The thing that bugs me is, our QB Jonathan Crompton didn't look all that good, but the line didn't help him that much. But we kept passing the ball anyway, even when Crompton wasn't doing well. Sure, our RB Arian Foster fumble the ball in the red zone, but he an averaged of 5.5 and Montario Hardesty had 7.4 yards per rush, why didn't we run the ball more? I think if we did, we could have won the game.

Right now, what makes me more mad about this game is the defensive and our defensive coordinator John Chavis. He needs to go, no question about it. This has became the normal deal with him and his defense coaching. Play well for three quarters and then blow it in the 4th quarter. UCLA had a 3rd string QB, 2rd string running back, a back up TE and most of the offense line were not starters as well. I hate that prevent defense that Chavis always uses in the 4th quarter and the defense just give up. In those two drives in the fourth quarter, they made UCLA OB Kevin Craft look like Troy Aikman. If he can do this to the Vols, just wait for Tim Tebow will do to Tennessee defense.

The coaching look bad in general. The team looked ill-prepared, slow to have a sense of urgency, and it seemed UCLA made adjustments and Tennessee didn’t, which is a trademark of Fulmer.

There is no excuses for this lost at all, and I do give UCLA credit and they deserves congratulations for not laying down. Something that Tennessee needs to learn to do.

I didn't actually watch the end of the Tennessee/UCLA game but I did happen to catch a glimpse of it on ESPN and when I saw that UCLA was only down by a touchdown and was inside the ten...well...I had the feeling things weren't going to end well for you guys. Those are the kind of drives though which you have to stop on defense...

You have to watch the whole game, to see how ugly that game was, by both teams.

There was a few times QB Jonathan Crompton got trip up by one of the linesmen and the another time, the RB Arian Foster ran right into Jonathan Crompton and he fell down.

UCLA's QB s Kevin Craft threw four first-half interceptions and we only got 7 points out of them and the only reason we got one touchdown out of it, was because the safety ran it all the way back.

We return all of our linesmen from last years team that only give up four sacks in the whole year. Last night, they couldn't stop a pee wee team from going after the QB.

I never cared much for hte old ball coach, but that's probably just a negative reaction to his press coverage. The talking heads all seem to think he has sliced bread beat.

And here I thought Steve Spurrier would win the SEC within three years, oh wait, this is his fourth year at South Carolina, nevermind!

After watching the NC State/South Carolina game last week, it really showed that South Carolina was in for a rough ride this year. I didn't understand why they were even rank after beating NC State last week, NC State is just bad this year.

One thing that I want to bring up, I feel that East Carolina is on the rise. I don't think they will beat WVU this week, but they are starting to get better at recruiting.

They are going to have one fine QB in few years. A kid name Rio Johnson plays QB at Sandy Creek high school in Tyrone, Ga. Last Friday, Sandy Creek played East Coweta high school and both are pretty good high school football programs in the Atlanta area.

But Rio Johnson has a nice touch on his throws and he can ran as well. On the field, he is very smart, and will not throw a ball, just so that he will not get hit. He will take a sack, that if a player can get him down or he will take off running, if there is a running lane open.

They are playing Shaw high school tonight and it should be a good game and I want to see how well, he will play with a very though central Georgia high school team tonight.

And on that note...yeah...it's going to not only be a long year for me but probably for the rest of the Big East. In case you missed the carnage yesterday, let me go through each of the teams in the Big East just to show how there really is nothing positive for me to take out of this weekend:

West Viriginia: Losing to East Carolina in the last game of that series is bad. But what adds salt to these wounds is the way East Carolina dominated us. Our defense is horrible, and there really is nothing else I can say about it right now. I blame that unit alone for why we lost (I realize that the offense wasn't perfect either but they have gained some grace from me by actually playing well against Villanova while the defense has looked horrible all year). I get the feeling that unless WVU's d improves soon, I could be looking at a very long and painful season.

USF: Beat UCF in overtime by three inches...which is bad simply because these guys were supposed to be the National title contender. They have the talent and the experience and the coaching so I see little reason why they didn't have an impressive outing against UCF...actually I do...it's a little something called consistency and it's something which killed USF last year.

Cincinnati: Got clobbered by Oklahoma. Yes, they kept it close for a little bit, but in the end Cincinnati, who looks like they could contend for the Big East title, couldn't hold on and displayed exactly how far they still have to go to be able to hang with the Oklahoma's of this world.

Uconn: Beat Temple 12-9 to remain undefeated. Besides the fact that they only beat Temple by 3...Tyler Lorenzo has looked rather bad this year which does not look good for the defending co-Big East Champions. Did I mention that they only beat Temple by 3 points?!

Lousiville: Finally had it's offense awaken and score over 50 points...now if only they could that against FCS schools we'd be set.

Rutgers: Didn't play but by virtue of being clobbered against Fresno State still aren't exempt from my wrath. Fresno State is a very good team but Rutgers looked awful...what a trend...

Pitt: Beat Buffalo, good for you Dave Wannestadt. But McCoy still hasn't had a 100 yard game and you didn't win by too much. Oh and did I mention that Buffalo out rushed them?! Where's the vaunted run D and incredible running game?

Syracuse: Has been pathetic since they fired Pasqualoni so there really isn't anything positive I can say about them at all.

I would also like to note that much of the blame should be on both USF and WVU's shoulders since these are the only schools who are considered to have elite (or close to elite) programs right now and it's going to be up to them to fix this. USF has to beat Kansas next week, it's required for the Big East to gain some of it's face back, and WVU has to beat Colorado and at least play competitively against Auburn not just to save the leagues face but their own (especially considering the fact that most WVU fans feel as if our team is always underestimated/underappreciated/not given the respect they deserve).

So, to summarize, this is looking not just like a down year for the Mountaineers but a down year for the entire Big East...and I feel really really bad about it...yeah...

On the other hand, my alma mater's a MAC school. (To give you a hint, I can put good things and Syracuse in the same sentence this week).

The MAC is really on the rise right now. The community at large still looks at MAC games as easy wins, but they are taking a bigger share of the wins (and the recruits) every year. It’s been fun to watch them.

Not that we are going to replace the Big East or anything – at least not yet.

Agreed. Following a group like Andre Woodson and company would be somewhat intimidating. But we have to could QB's who just need time to mature. Hartline is cool and steady, and doesn't make mistakes. He just needs to learn to throw long distance and move a little more. Cobb is flashy and athletic, and has made typical rookie mistakes that he can fix with experience. On the flipside, I am appalled our stadium booed Hartline when he opened the second half. What's wrong with you people? Still, considering the monster that Alabama is this year, I think we'll likely get our first good beating.

Yes, Tennessee is not much of a concern this year. We may finish up the year on a high note. I'm waiting to see how Cobb performs against Tenn. since he picked us over them.

The MAC would become decent right after my Herd left. XD Conference USA? What? Man, it hurts to be up 14 then watch them score 51 points. Where the heck is the secondary?

The Big East is up in the air for me. Both Louisville and WVU are in transitional periods and though they'll improve, how much is anybodies guess and WVU especially is notoriously shaky.

And despite being ranked for no good reason, OSU got killed. Yeah.

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."
- Mark Driscoll

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."
- Martin Luther

"I have to tell you first that I am ready to die. I have put my affairs in order. Your supreme weapon is killing. My supreme weapon is dying, because when you kill me, people all over Romania will read my books and believe on the God that I preach - even more than they do now."
- Dr. Joseph Ton, the exiled Romanian pastor (quoted by James Montgomery Boice)

"The best prayer I ever prayed had enough sin in it to condemn the whole world."
- John Bunyan

"If the Christian has lost sight of Calvary, that shows that he has lost his way."
- J.I. Packer[/SIZE]

Or perhaps OSU is just that bad...of course they didn't have Beanie Wells...but yeah...that was ugly. We'll see if USC can last this season, upsets have been a problem for them the last two seasons...

USC has an insanely deep team this season though, and for goodness sakes, if the linebackers are running for touchdowns after interceptions...

They always have a deep team filled with top recruits and yet the last two years they have still been upset (of course injuries did play a big roll in that...still they had depth...)...really there is no reason why USC shouldn't of been in at least one of National Championship in the last two years but mental lapses do happen...how else can you explain losing to Stanford at home. But still...they look ridiculously good this year...maybe we'll end up with a BCS championship this year that actually rivals USC/Texas in excitement.

From what I saw, I don't think it would have matter if Beanie Wells was healthy. I'm just glad they didn't go do something dumb and had put him in the game and get him really hurt.

I still remember that year in 1998, that our RB for Tennessee was playing and stayed in the game after he hurt his knee. A few plays later, he was done for the reason and had to have surgery and never really look the same after that.

But this has been a good weekend for me, not even if Fla kills Tenn next week will bring me down.

Well...tonight's the night I find out if the ECU debacle was just a hiccup of sorts or if my Mountaineers really are that bad...let's hope I don't have to randomly switch to the Burn Notice season finally while the game's going on...
