Get Smart

Saw this on a whim today. I love it! I haven't laughed so hard watching a movie since I watched Hot Fuzz (which is not to say that GS is as good as Hot Fuzz, but I found it just as entertaining). Steve Carrell, Alan Arkin and Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) were all hilarious, but I found Anne Hathaway a bit of a downer, mainly an excuse for the movie to have a hot chick.

And Masi Oka is in it too! XD

I am now very interested in watching the TV series.

Nah! Get Smart wouldn't be the same without Agent 99 and she was a sufficiently hawt Agent 99! I was a big fan of the series, and while this is not a word for word refilming it was an excellent homage. Incredibly hillarious!

This was a fantastic movie and I can't understand why critics didn't like it. ESPECIALLY since even Mel Brooks, the guy who helped create the original Get Smart TV series, liked it!

Could've done without the barf bag scene though. That's my only criticism.

That part was gross. So was the milk at the beginning.

The swordfish scene was my favorite. The barf bag scene was fantastic in a theatre crowded with people when I saw it.

I enjoyed Get Smart but I thought they did a disservice to the fans by making it a weird kind of prequel to the show. I don't know. The portrayal of Maxwell Smart didn't sit right with me, as much as I love Steve Carell. I thought he should have been goofier like on the TV Series...not so serious. The whole "I used to be fat" thing? Lame.

Anne Hathaway was totally gorgeous as Agent 99, though. That was pretty awesome. I really liked the movie, I just didn't enjoy what they did to Maxwell Smart.

I haven't gone to see the movie, but the commercials on tv were interesting...
People used to send my family tapes to watch, and on one of them was two episodes from the Get Smart series= me likey. Good, funny, etc. I just don't go out and watch movies, though, so I'm probably not going to do anything with it.

I think it was more supposed to be it's own thing. One of the major differences I noticed was that Maxwell was actually competent in the movie.

I loved it! I'm going to see it again when I get the chance. I thought all the actors did a great job. Carrel does a nice Don Adams impression, IMO ^^.

Everyone in my theater all said, "ooo, Heroes!" when he showed up.

As for me, I loved it. I saw it twice. ^^

It's interesting that the movie is getting such a good review from those of you in this thread. I was really excited to see it, but all of the reviews I've read in magazines/papers/etc. have been downers, so I was considering saving this movie for later. I do love Steve Carrell though, and if this movie is actually worth it, I might go before it leaves theaters. XD

I guess, but they tried to take some gags from the TV series and they just don't translate well if you don't do them up like the original. The Cone of Silence DID NOT work on the new film and neither did the shoe phone (it's like lol shoe phone wut? everyone has cell phones now!).

Still, I'm not trashing the film. I did enjoy it. The swordfish scene was one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen in a film.

NO GO SEE IT NOW CORRIE SERIOUSLY.

I think the only reason critics hated it was "It's not the TV show." WELL NO DUH. That doesn't make it a bad movie. :\ It's like going to a three star restaurant and saying it sucks because it isn't a four star restaurant.

It was funny, a lot of fun, and Steve Carrell was amazing. Sure, not everything worked (like Jamie said, the whole "I used to be fat" thing was pointless and dumb), but overall it was great.

Besides, MEL BROOKS, one of the guys who CREATED the original TV series, said it was good! When the guy WHO MADE THE ORIGINAL SHOW says it's good, then critics have absolutely no right to say "It isn't the TV show so it sucks." Mel Brooks should go to those critics and smack them with a shoe phone.

I got that about the phone. I just thought it was dumb. It seemed like a lame attempt to justify it for fan service.

I enjoyed the movie greatly; its the most I've laughed in a long time for a big-screen comedy and I would very much like to see a sequel to the movie and own the DVD.

That said, I can't claim any familiarity with the TV series, having never seen it. All I know about the original series is that the main character later made the voice for Inspector Gadget.

That analogy doesn't quite work, Nate. A better one would be that it's like going to a favorite restaurant that's under new management with a new chef and staff and everything, but the same name, and being upset when the food doesn't taste the same/service is different/prices are higher/etc. Because of the name, you're expecting a certain something, and they've changed that while retaining the name of what you used to love.

But did he say it was like the TV show? That's entirely different. The reason people are panning it for not being like the TV show is simple.

Get Smart used to be a TV show. It delivered a certain brand of humor with a certain cast, certain look/feel, certain gags, etc. People loved that and associated it with the name "Get Smart". When they go to a movie entitled "Get Smart" with the same characters and such, they expect X (the TV show's cast/look/feel/etc. When they receive Y (a different experience), they are completely justified in being less than thrilled. When you hand someone who loves smooth peanut butter a jar that says "smooth peanut butter" but is filled with crunchy peanut butter, even if the person who made the smooth peanut butter likes the crunchy as well, are you going to tell the person, "No, you're totally wrong for wanting the smooth peanut butter and the guy who made the smooth peanut butter should totally brain you with a jar of peanut butter"? ^_~

George Lucas probably likes Episodes I-III.

That said, while I'm sure it stands on its own as an enjoyable comedy, I still remain skeptical. Y'know why? 'Cause I'm a fan of the TV show. I want my Don Adams plz. I don't know how well they can replicate the original experience of the film, which is what has always been associated with the name Get Smart. Maybe they pulled it off. But I'm still skeptical. I hope you really enjoyed it, though.
