Freelancers report that PiQ's July issue ss its last

Freelance writers are reporting that PiQ magazine editor Kevin Gifford notified them that the magazine's current July issue is the last one. Freelancers will still be compensated for any work they had done for the unpublished August issue. According to the reports, PiQ's editorial staffers have already vacated their office. PIQ has not made a formal, public announcement about its status yet, and PiQ staffers were unavailable for comment.

PiQ began publishing in March after A.D. Vision ceased publication of its Newtype USA magazine. PiQ inherited much of Newtype USA's editorial staff, stable of freelance writers, and list of subscribers. However, PiQ differentiated itself by expanding its focus beyond Newtype USA's anime/manga coverage to popular culture in general. It also offered Newtype USA subscribers two issues for every remaining issue of Newtype USA still owed on their subscriptions. The July issue is PiQ's fourth issue.

Update 2: PiQ has confirmed that the July issue is its last issue, citing "a combination of low advertising revenue, poor business management, and a lack of proper marketing and promotion."

Man, that sucks. I thought PiQ would last for awhile.

Good riddance, I say. Replacing the best and one of the few anime magazines in the US with one in a category rife with competition was asking for it, in my opinion.

In other news, the sky is falling.

Heck yeah! What they failed to realize is that anime fans wanted an anime magazine. If we wanted a sci-fi magazine, we would BUY a sci-fi magazine. Not all anime fans are sci-fi fans, and vice-versa. It was combining two genre's that shouldn't be combined unless you know what you're doing]

Bringing NewType USA back would be the anime equivilant of Coca-Cola bringing back the original after "New Coke".

Hmm. Really? Oh well, I mean yeah I wish they had done all anime in the mag, but still it is sad when a magazine ends so quickly.

Ive still got Anime Insider and Otaku USA(The best substitute for Newtype for me right now is Otaku USA. I mean its not the same thing, but they have a manga insert and dvd just like Newtype. And I do like AI as well. I just wish Otaku USA would go monthly instead of bi-monthly.). Yeah for the survivors!

The way I see it, "Otaku USA" and "Anime Insider" are the "AT&T" and "Verizon" of the anime magazine community. Here's how I figure it:

Being Bi-Monthly puts "Otaku USA" at a slight disadvantage, but because it's the only magazine with a free DVD and manga inserts, many people may see it as a cheaper Newtype replacement. It also helps matters that, in terms of looks, Newtype and "Otaku USA" look a lot alike (save for the reverse pages and "Otaku" being 1/2'' shorter.) It is worth noting, however, that on more than one occasion, "Otaku USA" put anime on their DVD's that was original on NewType USA DVD's. Shame on you, "Otaku USA".

Anime Insider may be smaller, and not lack any freebies, but it's cheap price, monthly printing, and hilarious articles (I love the "Last Man Standing" articles) really make it a worthwhile opponent. The thing that I like about AI is that it's not trying to be the next "NewType". AI is the kind of magazine you can buy, roll up and stick in your back pocket for reading on the subway later, then throw away when you're done. "NewType" and "Otaku USA" always strike me as collectible magazines--you buy it wrapped in a bag, for crying out loud.

The way I see it, PiQ dropped the ball because they tried to do too many things at once and tried to please too many people at once. The reason we flocked like fleas on Fluffy to "NewType" was because it was an ANIME magazine: not a sci-fi, gamer magazine that just happens to mention anime in a few articles (I'm not even going to TALK about the abysmal "Is Anime Dead?" article in the premiere edition. The way I see it, if anime is "dead" then why the heck will I want to buy the magazine?)

I agree with Minakichan on the fact that PiQ was a bad magazine. Why the heck would ADV just get rid of a great magazine imported from Japan? All I have to say is get a Japanese Newtype subscription. Sure it'll be more expensive, but at least this is a Japanese source for anime news!

Oh yeah, Protoculture Addicts is also a good anime mag. =3

Because ADV and Kadokawa have some problems with each other. You can't just blame ADV for them dropping Newtype USA, the blame also goes with Kadokawa as well.
