Ok, so I just got one of those old nintendo colnsoles...uhm. NES? I think (has no knowledge of anything pre n64...and very little knowledge on that.) My parents thought that if the video game wasn't educational, there was no point in getting it. So I lack knowledge on these games. are they any good? (the whole thing cost $5. console, 20 games, 2 controllers + extras)

games:
Dr. Mario
Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles
robocop
skate or die
wrestlemania challenge
football
hogan's alley
bad news baseball
metal gear
wheel of fortune
super mario bros. 3
metroid
castlevania 2: simons quest
super mario bros.
kirby's adventure
punch out x2
N.A.R.C
Gun smoke
Tecmo bowl
double dribble

one of the extras was a gamepad like what you'd find in an arcade.

also...how do I get this system to work? I plugged it into the tv...put in a game...black screen. Am I doing something wrong? Or are they just too old? *hope not cause I've never played these before....*

(I hit post thread and nothing happened and refresfed and it didn't show so I'm hoping I don't double this...)

Did you plug in the power and turn it on as well?

Just checking. :)

:shady: yeah....and the little red light just blinks. I'll be taking it home now *since it's closing time* and maybe with the three systems we have we might get a combined working one.

Wow, all that for five bucks? That's pretty cool.

But sometimes old NESs don't work very well. There's a glitch they all have where they start failing to read the games. Was the screen flashing too or was it just black?

Oh, if the light on the front was flashing then that means it couldn't read the cartridge. You could try looking up some tips on the internet to get it working. With mine, I used to have to stick something in there to hold the cart down so it would make good contact.

just black...but the screen jumped...like the number of the channel (3 in this case) would go down about an inch then jump back up, but still black.

well, it's at home now with the other 2 systems. Hopefully they can get one to work. :) I feel like I missed out on a lot of good games due to my parents beliefs (was so thrilled that one christmas where they actually bought me a GBA with Golden sun...i think i actually cried. All this was after I bought my pikachu n64. guess I proved that my grades wouldn't slip if I played non educational games. They even bought me a ps2 for my 16th b-day. yeah...i was happy.) but yeah. I've played smash bros...and I think the only games out of all those characters I've played were pokemon and zelda. . .no kirby, metroid, original super mario bros, star fox, etc.

You have to mess with it a lot to get them to work. I haven't had an NES system that worked well since... like I was in 1st grade :P

Pull the game out put it back in... blow the game blow the system. Put game in halfway blah blah blah... I don't know you play around with it well enough you may get something to work. I had a whole ritual to try to get my games to work. Sometimes I had to settle with a messed up screen cause the game just would not work all the way.

I had NES cleaning kit that seemed to work a little bit. Maybe you could find one of those.

5 bucks for all that is quite good though if anything works. Simons Quest I can tell you though don't even to try and get to work. It will take to much effort on your part and the game sucks :D

I just got an NES from a friend and it works! We played Duck Hunt for hours last weekend.

Kirby's Adventure is an awesome game. Easily my favorite. And it's the first (and only) video game I've beaten other than Pokemon.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

simons quest...have it on my comp. My mother in law bought me a konami classic cd. It came with castlevania 1-3 and contra and super c. so I have played it before. :) simons quest seemed the easier of the three for me to play.

I used to blow on the cartridge, put it in, turn on the power, hold down the reset button, wiggle the cartridge inside the machine, make sure the game was firmly seated, then let up on the reset button. You could try it, you never know it might just work.

Any friend with any experience getting old NES systems to work should be able to help you out. You got a great deal if you can get it working.

By any chance, when you turned on the TV, did you switch the AV channel? When I had my NES, I think I had to link it up to the VCR, but I don't think it's necessary to use a VCR in conjunction with the NES.

Here were the steps I used:
1. Turn on TV, switch AV channel.
2. Put in the game, push it in all the way and press it down (it has to "lock"), but do this gently.
3. Close the lid.
4. Press the Power button (but do this gently, for some reason if you press really hard sometimes it does not load the game - at least that was my experience).

If you want to try and clean the game cartridge, see if you can find a camera lens cleaner, they are like a small "pump" so that when you press it air comes out. Clean the cartridge by blowing the air from one side of the end of the cartridge to the next. You can also try blowing it with your mouth in this way, just be careful that you use a controlled blow and that your mouth is relatively dry (I once saw a friend blow the cartridge and saliva went in, trust me, you don't want that).

Hope it works. :)
